Quote from fenn68 on May 29, 2022, 4:40 pmGoing to be interesting when Clevinger returns. Gore is not going back to the pen … Martinez likely will and they stay with a 6 man for the next month, at least.
I expect after the All-Star break, assuming the Padres are still in a strong playoff spot and all the SP are still on point, that Melvin starts getting creative to give them all some rest … likely skipped starts or even shorter outings if the game allows.
Sure looks as though Melvin’s strategy is to get all the starters to good deep (6+ innings) in the first half to build endurance then start to control the innings / rest in the second half and have the both conditioned and rested by the end of Sept then playoffs.

Probably 30% … mainly because the potential return is probably worth less than keeping him in the pen. Remember he can be a FA after the season (if he chooses) so a “non-contender” is not going to give much and a contender who needs pitching probably would not offer anything good off the ML roster.
The only realistic chance would be if a “re-worked” contract could be done as part of the trade … never easy.

Quote from MrPadre19 on May 29, 2022, 8:56 pmWas thinking about a contender that missed out on a better option.
With Pierce,Pom,Morejon,Castillo all coming back(healthy & productive hopefully),and 7 starters, and the fact he may opt out, getting something for him may be our best option.
I know I know, you can never have too much pitching…..but there is literally a chance we have “too much pitching”.
Long shot I know…but just a thought.
Probably a better chance we trade a reliever if any arm?

Quote from fenn68 on May 30, 2022, 6:29 amAgree that the Padres will have to make some moves (baring more injuries) off the pitching staff … and having a challenge guessing who goes and how they go: trade vs. DFA vs optioned to minors plus how long the 14 pitcher limit is in place (just got extended for a few more weeks). A lot of factors that push in different directions.
1. Expect the Padres want to keep the most effective staff and trade off the bottom end
2. Not sure any of the trade pieces Preller would consider will yield more than a mid-range prospect since most are veteran … short control. Plus the market will be contenders (and there should be buyers) are not giving up anyone of value off their ML active roster.
3. In the near term (June) the pressure will come from the return of Clevinger, Johnson, and Pomeranz … none will be optioned. They can buy time by optioning Morejon and Baez and although effective so far on rehab … probably need more outings to be sure they will be effective in the MLB before dropping someone. Wilson will be an easy option candidate but soon two others need to be moved.
4. How much of a problem do they want to create for 2023 … ie will they move some controlled for 2023 while having a number of pitchers who will be FA (or could be) at the end of the season.
Gore - Musgrove - Manaea - Clevinger - Snell - Darvish - Martinez (that is 7 of 13) are likely too valuable for the Padres and too good in 2023 to get traded for prospects. That really leaves the pen and probably need to exclude Rogers as the closer.
So 5 remaining slots: Garcia; Suarez; Crismatt; Stammen; Hill (assumes Wilson optioned with the return of Clevinger) … will get pressure if Johnson and Pomeranz return but have to worry about making a non-reversible move considering Johnson and Pomeranz’s health. Also, potentially a bit later Adams may become a factor. Crismatt and Hill can be optioned I believe.
Then have to guess if any other team actually wants to deal for the Padres low end arms.
At a minimum, this will be interesting.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on May 30, 2022, 7:24 amI look at Hill last 3 outings he has been terrific + Morejon (probably highest trade value and controlled) + Wethers (only 22 no need to trade him But if it's part of a package for a controlled player like Adell or Reynolds sure) + Grish (if we get a CFer) + Azocar (as an add to a trade/replacement type on the 26) and for a Star level player Snell might be a SP I may be willing to move... besides these guys the rest would all be specs and/or player being upgraded...ie if we were to get JD Mart then Voit would either be part of that package or involved on a separate trade..unless 2 starts a week 1B/DH and PH is what we retain him for....
Dimelson Lamet would be another guy I would move asap for a 15ish type spec
Bottomline I don't think we need much.. 1 or 2 Bats..P too deep and too many coming back to go get more... Tatis back strengthens starting Offense and Bench
On a plus side ..would like to see AJP get some prospect depth especially at the A+ level and rookie league/aka AZ level... LE seems pretty loaded..SA is ok.. EP is ok..FW is BARE... wouldn't mind a few A+ type bats and SP with upside ..in some trades

Quote from Henry Silvestre on May 30, 2022, 7:39 amA trade like Jays #20 spec C Meza (17yrs old) for Hill and Lamet would address Jays current needs..give Lamet a chance to start again ... with Suarez absolutely dominant vs lefties ..Hill becomes expendable even without Pomz back.. as Cristmat and Suarez can cover the LHP in the pen ..1 because he is LHP and the other cause he neutralizes LHB...
Meza gives us HUGE upside at C but is so far from MLB and only #20 in Jays system just the type of move AJP loves to make..

Quote from fenn68 on May 30, 2022, 8:29 amre JDMartinez ... Boston is one of the hottest teams in the AL and only 3 games (in the loss column) out of a playoff slot while ahead of them the CWS and LAA are falling and showing their flaws. Better chance BOST is a buyer than a seller.
I like the idea of going to one of Preller strong suits and deal a veteran RP for a deep prospect with high upside ... don't care if he is far way (DSL/Complex league) ... just a legit upside prospect. System needs some boost and better chance of getting value that way than a mid-level player in full season ball.
Morejon - Baez - Castillo are exciting as PROSPECTS with POTENTIAL but limited ML experience and success ... the organization has to be pretty sure they can play NOW in the ML before the get rid of some veterans. Pretty sure they will be adds if there are injuries (IL stints) but would they move players to make room for them ... not unless the players moved really tank (or someone gives a surprisingly appealing offer).
As it stand we could see Clevinger - Johnson - Pomeranz already bumping Wilson, Hill, and Crismatt or Stammen. Worry about the non-reversible moves if not convinced the replacement is a slam dunk improvement.
At the same time, am loathe to deal any of the prospects ... all will be needed in 2023 as half of the staff will be FA and given their performance in 2022 ... very difficult to re-sign all ... so a lot of 2023 holes. Also, why not eager to deal Darvish or Snell since Gore is the only clear returnee and two SP and ?????? will kill them in 2023.
Preller is in a box (fortunately has one of the best records in MLB now ... so no panic) trying to navigate winning in 2022 AND staying relevant in 2023.
