Entering Tuesday, the team’s starters have gone at least six innings a major league-leading 38 times and at least seven innings a major league-leading 14 times. Their average of 5.7 innings per start and 92 pitches per start are also highest in the majors. Manager Bob Melvin has several times said the ability to provide the starters with extra rest has made him comfortable allowing them to go longer in games.

Musgrove said Monday he could be ready to go on what is standard rest but has effectively become short rest for Padres’ starters. But he also voiced his fondness for the extra time a six-man rotation has created for rest and recovery.

I feel vindicated.

I have been for the 6 man rotation giving the extra day rest while also lowering their total innings into the Fall and Playoff time.

Of course the argument against has been that you’re 6th man is pitching innings that your #1 guy should be pitching therefore costing effectiveness.

I do allow for the fact that this rotation is not like most…our #6 is better than most other teams #3….so it works more now than it would in other seasons.

But,with guys coming off injury and “a guy” (Snell) who generally can’t go 5+ I think it’s worth it even if the #6 isn’t great.

Especially if the alternative is you have to shut 1-2 guys down when you need them most in Sept-Oct.

Why do Davies and Gallen scare me?

MadBum doesn’t at all….but the way our offense struggles with guys who change speeds well and have pinpoint control….the first two do.

Merrill Kelly is the Dbacks pitcher that scares me the most.

Merrill Kelly is 7-2 with an ERA of 2.43 and 58 strikeouts in 11 appearances versus the Padres in his career.

22-29  with ERA of 4.72 vs everyone else.    The Padres have kept him in the League all by themselves .

Davies was 5-0 against us until last night.
