2021 Season

PreviousPage 87 of 114Next

So unless something is unreported yet, it appears that we have our team for the balance of the season. I would guess, that with the SP not going as well as we had figured, that SD will probably carry 14 pitchers for the balance of the season. Leaving spots for 12 for position players.

1. Tatis, 2. Machado, 3. Crone, 4. Grisham, 5 Frazier, 6. Pham, 7. Caratini, 8. Myers. The four remaining making the bench options. Hosmer, Nola, Kim are locks, and with trading for Marisnick, Mateo has to lose his spot, right?

Some flexibility for Tingler with this roster. Against a tough RHSP, you could load up the starting line up with lefties, with Frazier in LF, Grisham in CF, Crone at 2B, Hosmer at 1B, and Caratini catching, Machado and Tatis, then chose between Pham and Myers based on who is hot or better history against the SP. Leaving Nola, Marisnick and Pham/Myers on the bench.

Then vs the tough LHSP, you could load up RHH, Pham, Marisnick, Myers, Machado, Tatis, Kim, Hosmer, and Nola. Leaving a bench of Grisham, Caratini, Crone, and Frazier.

We look a little more balanced with the add of Marisnick. Just need all to produce and the SP to come together.

13 or 14 pitchers will be a challenging call.

Go with 14 pitchers and a 4 man bench: 2nd catcher, Kim, Profar, and Frazier ... but what happens to Marisnick? Clearly Mateo is gone.

Go with 13 pitchers (as it is now) can keep Marisnick but with the adds of Hudson, Strahm, and Lamet coming which 3 current pitchers get optioned? released? to IL? Crismatt is clearly one ... but are the ones with minor league options the ones we want off the 26 man roster?

Why is Tatis no longer in the game?????

Why is Tatis no longer in the game?????

Looks as if he hurt that left shoulder again, sliding into 3rd.

Ugh......

Looks like the perfect ending to a perfect day for the Padres.

Darvish getting pounded does not bode well for our future. Is he still dealing with his previous injury? If so, IR him.

We have no chance of catching the Duds or Giants. We just need to keep ahead of...is it Cincinatti?

We'll need to win a one game play in right, to actually make it in to WS tournament? Just make sure our best pitcher is healthy and ready to deal.

Just checking in on todays game.

Young Mr. Knehr pulled after 3 innings and 42 pitches? Any specific reason he was pulled so early? Was he NOT a starting pitcher in the minors? Did he not pitch past the 3rd? Or more than 40 pitches?

This organization really boggles the mind when it comes to pitcher development.

Not sure why so soon but the plan was a modified bullpen day from the start. My guess is that with Monday off AND next Thursday off they wanted to make sure the pen kept sharp rather than have some not work for days.

Then it sounds as though Hudson and Strahm will be activated for Tuesday's game putting more (fresh arms) in the pen. My guess is that Knehr and Diaz get optioned again. At his point, don't think they are worried about Knehr's "development" at the ML level and will give him the innings in AAA.

With the off days on Monday and Thursday, will not need a 5th starter for a while. Probably Snell - Musgrove against OAK then Weathers - Darvish - Snell - Musgrove for the next four. At that point, could go with another bullpen day the go with those four again. I guess it depends how the pen is used prior combined with their plan for Lamet ... sounds as though Paddack is a late August target return.

Excluding catchers (not hitting at all) ... took a look at the main 7 position players with a focus on their inconsistency. Hot then Cold or visa versa.

Considering OPS in APR MAY JUN JUL: (Green above / Red below / Blue about average)

844 ... 652 ... 456 ... 953: Hosmer

755 ... 811 ... 937 ... 763: Cronenworth

915 ... 1.264 ... 1.094 ... 845: Tatis

706 ... 766 ... 899 ... 1.163: Machado

503 ... 797 ... 1.074 ... 655: Pham

894 ... 902 ... 877 ... 504: Grisham

824 ... 676 ... 719 ... 856: Myers

I know most tend to lock in on the below average runs (or sometimes the above average runs) and just conclude that is the player. However, for most have to deal with the ups and downs (as it is with most players).

Pretty comfortable with Machado - Tatis - Cronenworth's consistency. The other 4 are challenges.

Pham starts ice cold ... heats up ... gets blazing hot ... goes ice cold. I guess two months to define his season but looking more like he is let go as a FA at age 33 looking for a multi-year deal.

Grisham suddenly crashed and 3 strong months. Hopefully July is not the new (real) Grisham.

Hosmer / Myers are not living up to their contracts. However, Myers is actually not that inconsistent and settles pretty average. Hosmer had the two month dip ... but bracketed that with two good months.

In the you are here mode: the current problem is Pham and Grisham ... not the others.
