2021 Season

PreviousPage 114 of 114

So the final nail in the coffin....the best the Padres could do this year is a record of 80-82 if they beat the Giants this weekend and that isn't going to happen......

August 1st - 62-47.....15 games over .500.......Sept 1st - 72-63......9 games over .500......Oct 1st - 78-82.....2 games under .500

Expectations will kill you and after all of the off season, spring training and early season hype by the National Media about the Padres

and Dodgers both winning 100 games this year....the Dodgers have 103 behind the Giants 106....at least the National Media hit the .500 mark unlike the Padres.....Has there been a bigger late season collapse by any team that was so hyped ?

Disgusting

As of today, only 4 teams in MLB have won fewer games than we have since the break.

No way Siedler and Fowler don't make changes.

Per Dennis Lin (the Athletic) …. Tatis is quoted as clearly wanting and intending to be the Padres shortstop going forward.

Not sure how Preller views Tatis’ future as a SS … but if not as a SS (or only a part time SS) … that will create a conflict.

The “analytical” types probably see him in the OF since he is ranked poorly defensively as a SS and arguable it is safer for his shoulder there. The types (including me) that look outside pure analytics … accept Tatis as the full time SS. His energy for the team (and probably to maximize his mental condition) is most impactful at SS plus he is only 22 and has all the athletic skills to improve to a good defensive SS.  The “average” fans probably also want to see him involved in more plays at SS … and baseball is entertainment for the fans. Would add that he is not a good defense OF either at this point.

For 2022, an INF of Cronenworth - Frazier - Tatis - Machado with Kim the prime reserve should be playoff quality. As for Hosmer, his ever declining defense at 1B looks to move him to a part-time player in the field and DH (assuming DH in 2022) … assuming they cannot move him.

Agreed on Hosmer. He leaves too much of a void both offensively and defensively to play every day. That said, I can't imagine ANY team wanting him....except of course you package him with Abrams or Hassell( note: DO NOT trade either)

Looks like he'll be our LH pinch hitter/DH next year....his last year under guaranteed money, right?

He has a PLAYER option to opt out after next season … if he does not the Padres are still on the hook for $39MM/3 years and Hosmer gains full no trade rights.

Sort of depends on how Hosmer plays in 2022 coupled with his agent’s (Boras) view that he could do as well as a free agent, and Hosmer’s discontent with the Padres / part-time role. Can’t really understand what plays in a player’s mind (especially one who has earned a ton of money). He may be motivated to return to KC or go home to Miami.

Agree that no team is going to take Hosmer and his contract leaving Preller with three options:

1. Live with Hosmer and gamble he opts out at the end of 2022.

2. Work a trade with a team that really needs some 1B/DH support where the Padres eat a major part of his salary … and expect little return. Benefit is that Hosmer is gone and at least part of his salary is off the books.

3. Work a trade with a team that needs some 1B/DH support and really convents one (or more) Padre prospects. That removes Hosmer and most salary. Agree the prospects can’t be Abrams or Hassell or Gore. I would use Campusano if as part of the deal the Padres gets a useful piece in return (prospect or multi-year control veteran in the OF).

Preller has not been successful in moving Hosmer but every year that passes Hosmer’s contract commitment gets smaller and easier for the seller and buyer get to an agreeable cash split.

All most of us fans are burned out on Hosmer underperforming his contract with “average” offense (but poor for a 1B) and what appears to be a rapidly declining defensive profile (no idea how the Hosmer we see won a gold glove). Side: his highly touted clubhouse leadership clearly has done nothing to keep this team together in 2021. Yet, pretty sure … for the right price … there are teams that would take him.

That would have been a great game and a great win if only other meant something for us and not just the Dodgers.

So Hosmer is the reason this season turned into an epic fail ?

Got it

????????? Did is miss a post the said (or even implied) Hosmer was the blame for the failed season?

It was a team effort.

The critique on Hosmer is his poor performance … put more in focus by him eating up $20MM of payroll that could have been deployed on better options.

In 2021 he was 24th out of 26 qualified 1B in WAR. That just built on his three previous lackluster seasons with the Padres. In his 4 years with the Padres he is 35th out of 38 qualified 1B in WAR … based on a WRC+ of 99 (below average) ranking him 35th and a dWAR ranking him 36th. For that the Padres have paid $80MM.

He may not be the sole reason of a failed 2021 … but he sure did his part … and based on his 4 years in SD … he will be a major factor in a failed 2022 (if he plays).
