It looks like they are getting 6 prospects from NYY. Sounds like quantity over quality.

The return ends up 4 prospects to TEX … highest NYY #14 and all in their 20s and 2nd-3rd round pick types. TEX also sends a RP (and pays the remaining contract).

1. Either TEX really sees some talent in this group … more than most others do, or

2. “We” are all over estimating the price of adding these hitters … the buyers are apparently less willing to go all in.

Gallo is very good (and well hyped in the media) … under control in 2022 … fair contract … all should spell a quality return YET no one bit on moving a major piece.

Hard to see why a number of other teams wouldn’t (couldn’t) beat the NYY offer … not just the Padres … given 2022 control did not have to be a contender.

Maybe we are just out of sync with GM thinking either on the value of Gallo (as hyped by the media) or the value of top prospects.

Berrios is controlled in 2022 and is comparatively low in salary … and very good. So, he would be “expensive” in terms of pieces going to MINN. Also previously suggested was that MINN wants ML/ML ready (or near) type return since they think they can get back into contention (AL Central) quickly.

Nightengale is reporting that the Padres are more engaged in adding Berrios than in Scherzer … not surprising considering the money.

Want to go “off the wall”: Story and Cron (both FA after this season) for Hosmer, Mateo, and and a couple of mid-level prospects.

Money in 2021 about the same but COLO who will have some difficulty adding in the FA market gets 4 years of Hosmer at an effective AAV of $15MM/year … leader on a rebuilding team … plus some prospects.

Story not having a great season … but could help at 1B/OF over the last two months as could Cron. The big bonus to the Padres is the removal of Hosmer’s contract.

Time to be “creative”.

Might as well get real crazy, and through some cash and another prospect and ship Myers to COL. He kills it up there!

TEN of their final 13 games are against the Pirates and Nationals and the other three are against the White Sox who will have their seeding wrapped up by then and be resting players!

This is bad gentlemen....cause we will be playing the Giants/Dodgers/Braves/Cardinals and Astros.
