Who are your 8?
Above FanGraphs projections lists 9 ...
Yu Darvish 184 11 2.7 1.2 0.302 75.30% 3.46 3.51 4.1
Joe Musgrove 164 9.2 2.3 1.2 0.306 73.10% 3.87 3.9 3.2
Blake Snell 146 11 3.5 1.1 0.301 76.30% 3.42 3.55 3.1
Dinelson Lamet 123 11.8 3.5 1.1 0.306 75.10% 3.5 3.49 2.7
Chris Paddack 122 9.4 2.2 1.4 0.302 73.50% 3.88 3.97 2
MacKenzie Gore 75 9.6 3.8 1.3 0.304 73.70% 4.13 4.32 1
Adrian Morejon 39 10.6 3.7 1.1 0.315 75.10% 3.67 3.76 0.7
Ryan Weathers 13 6.7 3.7 1.2 0.307 71.40% 4.6 4.81 0.1
Reggie Lawson 9 8.2 4.9 1.4 0.307 70.90% 5.09 5.22 0I get your point ... then who? Mason Thompson? Avila? Scholtens?
The reality is ... Padres still have A LOT of trade chips ...

Quote from Brian Connelly on March 31, 2021, 7:17 amDidn't count Lawson. He's a better prospect than Baez or Nix, but availability now at exactly 12 months post TJ dubious, plus REALLY needs some playing time in Minors... MAYBE by end of season. FWIW he couldn't have timed his TJ Surgery any better since he's missed 14 months... of nothing. Thompson COULD get back to SP eventually, but highly doubt it's this year. Could see them using him like an opener though.
Avila is who I had next at #11 (now #9)... he's 18 months post TJ, but they still slow played him with no appearances in ST? Hopefully working to a Minors opening day being full go? Before/after him it's probably Reiss Knehr & Daniel Camarena probably both better as multi-innning RP

Quote from fenn68 on March 31, 2021, 9:40 amIF the Padres (or any team) have to go with the #9 SP option for anything more than a spot start or two ... big problem since I would guess the #9 option for any team is probably not ML ready (quality).
If a spot start ... Crismatt was a minor league starter or with nine arms in the pen see bullpen days before calling up a body that is not ready.
If a longer team need (which would suggest a major sequence of injuries) Preller will make a trade for at least someone with a bit of ML ability (probably a “rental” for 2021 only).
Now the wild card is if the need is late in the season, there is the chance that some under the radar minor league arm has shown enough to the organization in the first few months to be a surprise add. No idea who.

Quote from fenn68 on March 31, 2021, 1:35 pmWe should be hearing soon on the roster for the “alternative site” squad (who will be in Peoria) and the “taxi squad”. No real word from the league on the number for the alternate site but most expect a couple of dozen (AAA types) who seem ripe for call-up.
Since the minor league camp will be active ... expect the prospects not likely to get called up in April to go there and start working with their team for the season.
I expect there will be a strict separation in Peoria between the alternate squad and the minor league camp for COVID protocol reasons. Since only a few teams have their alternate sites at their ST facilities .. not an issue for them.
Not going to be all that great for the players at the alternate site to just do drills / workouts for a month then hit the AAA season without game readiness. Would not be surprised if the early April goes well (COVID wise) MLB modifies the rules to be more accommodating.

I never liked the Tim Hill trade. Of course I was sorry to lose Cordero for his potential alone, but he doesn't seem like he will ever reach it now. Who I was more worried about was Ronald Bolanos. He is a guy who can step in and at least soak up some innings. We may miss him this year.
