2021 Season

PreviousPage 101 of 114Next

Should note for balance, Blake Snell continued his excellent work AT PETCO ... now, 11 starts (61.1 innings) with an ERA at 2.49 and a WHIP at 1.01. That is Cy Young quality and what the Padres paid for. Just let us not discuss his work AWAY for PETCO.

I never understood the Frazier deal....good player but did we really need him ?..... Unless of course the plan was to move Tatis Jr to the outfield, all he did was create a playing time problem.....Machado's motor runs at a different cycle than others , which can be good or bad depending on the day.....Meyers and Hosmer have been solid but not spectacular and given the way Andy Green almost destroyed their careers,I think they have bounced back just fine......The Manager ?.........expectations will kill you and this season is no exception.....I have always felt 2022 was going to be when the Padres made their move and this season is invaluable to the guys on this team because NOW they really know what a grind  a 162 game schedule can be when expectations are high......Tingler is an improvment over Andy Green for sure....Green damn near ruined this team but the question I have always had was why on earth did the Padres fire Bud Black......he would have been perfect for the way this team is built now and he checks off all the boxes as opposed to Tingler and Opie Green.

Not being able to make a deal at the deadline hurt but the reasons are pretty clear......everybody loved giving up 3,4 or 5 guys in a trade including young pitchers except me and I made it very clear this massive overpay would come back to bite the Padres in the ass and it has.....didn't have much left behind the top four in the farm system that dropped from 1 / 2 to 17 but to Prellers credit he didn't fall into the massive overpay that the trade deadline has become especially for a 2 month rental......players you may have wanted that are rentals will be available in FA

Lastly we get to Pham....this season cannot end soon enough to see him gone in my opinion....the most I/Me selfish player I can ever remember in a Padre uniform.....This team will be better off getting that cancer out of the clubhouse.

While missing the playoffs this year would be a disaster considering the players we traded away those moves weren't made solely with 2021 in mind.

So a deep run(or more) in the playoffs next year and you could still consider the moves a success.

These moves will even have an impact going forward even after 2022 in some ways.

The payroll level and expectations alone are something this team, and fan base, have rarely ever experienced before.

If you believe as I do that our window has barely started opening these recent moves can be considered a part of this window which I feel will extend into 2024 and maybe beyond.Especially because AJ "did not" succumb to the pressure at the deadline to "win now" by trading any of the Big Four.

Eternally thinking about the future just makes me sick.

Okay, as much as I was all for moving Fernando to the OF, helping to create space for better fielders, after watching the spirit be drained out of this kid everytime he runs out there......ENOUGH!!!!

He belongs in the IF, where the action is, where his personality effects the game, seemingly every inning.

My flip flop is easier, too, seeing just how bad Frazier is. No speed, no thump, no range, and as of yet, not much hit. Preller( if he's still here!) should be able to ship him out this off season for a nice MILB piece or 2.

Back to the drawing board about finding Pham's replacement in LF....and given his numbers over the past 2 seasons, shouldn't be difficult to improve upon, or at least duplicate, for a fraction of the cost.

I was first for the move to the OF ... then I reversed (even before seeing some of his shaky play there) .... now still want him in the INF but getting all the pieces aligned is going to be more difficult that we think.

Hosmer is not going anywhere without eating half of his contract AND adding a top prospect like Campusano. For me, not worth that just to move him with no replacement at hand. (do expect him to opt out after next season). More likely keep him and maybe have a partial platoon with Nola and/or Campusano ... keeping in mind the DH demands a bat too.

The wild card (for 2022) is Abrams ... does he make the jump (like Tatis did) and would it be as a SS/2B or an OF?

Even if Campusano and Abrams make the jump in 2022 to cover the loss of Pham and adding the DH ... still short a bat unless they go with the Kim/Frazier 2B plan. Padres will have to get lucky on a low cost FA type to fill out the roster for that additional bat ... remember they have one of the highest payrolls in MLB (and I think the smallest market club in that group) ... that will curb any spending on a filler bat. If Abrams and/or Campusano don't deliver in 2022 ... not sure what happens.

Yes, now a long shot but not totally written off making the Wild Card for 2021 ... if the Padres start winning. The teams behind (StL/PHIL) have their own issues so the focus is on CINN ... easy schedule but we saw what happened to the Padres with an easy schedule.

On Sept 1 the active roster expands by 2 ... seems timed right for the return of Paddack to start and Lamet to the pen. Combined those adds with more off days ... we should see the end of the bullpen days.

A little too early to think 2022 in depth but as we do have to consider the potential impact of the unknowns from a new CBA on player control / pay rules and the potential of a work stoppage that would minimize the value of any player only controlled for 2022.

As it stands:

C: Nola; Caratini

INF: Hosmer; Frazier; Cronenworth; Machado .... Kim and TBD reserves

OF: Myers; Grisham; Tatis .... Profar and TBD reserves

Somewhere out of Kim, Profar, and TBD1 and TBD2 probably need a starter quality to lengthen the line-up when some is the DH. Only "prospects" that may be in contention are Campusano and Abrams for a major role ... everyone else are maybe bench types.

Can't see deleting of the current crop of position players while trying to fill the open slots.

For balance, some look at pitching ... and the issue here is assuming health for all ... not likely and therefore need to keep the redundancy until they see where everyone stands in ST.

SP: Clevinger; Musgrove; Darvish; Snell; Paddack

RP: Lamet (Closer?); Pagan; Adams; Pomeranz; Hill; Strahm; Johnson (option selected); Stammen (option selected)

So who does that leave in AAA if one (or more) of the above failing? A bunch of unproven prospects: Weathers; Knehr; Gore; ???. Don't think Morejon, Baez, Castillo, Lawson will be ML ready (health) in ST. After that ????

Hard to see trading pitching for position players when pitching has a lot of questions.

Combining the position player needs and the pitching concerns with the high payroll and the concern of the impact of CBA/work stoppage the menu sets-up for a not so active winter ... maybe somewhat limited to some higher profile non-roster signings with an invite to ST. That may shift to more activity once it is clear when the season starts and the health in ST of the pitchers.

Tonight is what I expected a lot of this season. 8 great innings from the SP, and 3-5 runs per game from the offense. Mind you, some of it came from bad fielding on the ANA part, however, put the ball in play and good things happen.

Thank you , Mark Grant!

I've been saying for 4 years now that Hosmer's stretch at 1B is all wrong. And on Fletcher's groundball, where Kim fielded and threw to first, Grant picked up that Eric was stretching towards 2nd base as opposed to 3rd, where the ball was coming from. Made the play a lot closer than it should have been( still think it was a tie base)

Was taught in Little League that you don't start your stretch until you know where the ball is coming from. Hosmer cheats almost all the time and ends up catching a lot of throws to his side as opposed to out in front of him.

Nice that one of our announcers FINALLY picked it up( don't think Hosmer is going to change but it's nice to hear the former MLB'er point it out)
