2021 Season

Seems more dramatic when he’s not going well.

This season will have come down to our inability to dominate the Rockies and Diamondbacks.
Spoke to soon.
Small miracle the Brewers came back and won this one.
Hopefully the start of a long losing streak for the Red legs

Quote from WindsorUK on August 25, 2021, 10:48 pmSo, Tingler's riduculous move earlier in the game( 1 inning of Marisnick on D) just took the bat out of Machado AND Cronenworth's hands.
Unbelievable.....

Duds still have bats on their bench....in the 15th!
Roberts just gave Tingler an in game lesson on how to manage a game in the majors.
What a wasted opportunity.

Quote from TarheelPadre on August 26, 2021, 5:16 amTalk about falling off a cliff this season. This team had everything in late May. First the pitching was abysmal, now we can’t hit our way out of a paper bag. How can Tingler get buy-in from the team when they clearly do not respect him? You get down on your friggin’ knees and beg Bochy to take this job. If he won’t do it, then go get Showalter. We need an adult who knows how to manage a game and players.
You just watched $172 million get thrown into a fire. Any fool can spend money, we needed someone to spend it wisely. Anybody can look the part as a manager, we needed someone with more experience than some Dominican winter league. Losing teams are able to draft top players like we have for the better part of our entire friggin history, but it takes skill to actually develop that talent. I have been a fan since 1977 and nothing surprises me anymore with this team.

Quote from fenn68 on August 26, 2021, 6:58 amNeither a pro or anti Tingler guy (yet) .... I still on focusing on the failure of specific players with mega reputations, mega pay, and mega egos that collapse under the challenge.
In August ... against lesser teams ... in a playoff push the Padres get:
- Machado (85 AB) 200/250/294 (544 OPS)
- Pham (69 AB) 159/275/304 (579 OPS)
- Frazier (76 AB) 237/293/276 (569 OPS)
I will put Tatis on the fringe (some consideration for is injury) in 37 AB ... 216/310/622 is not up to his standard except for the SLG.
Personally I don't think any manager can motivate Machado or Pham to do anything differently ... their failures are entirely on their shoulders.
PS ... hard as it is to believe given how much they have been critizised ... two of the best hitters during August have been:
- Myers (61 AB) 870 OPS
- Hosmer (74 AB) 764 OPS
Also Cronenworth, Grisham, and Nola have been above average OPS ... Cronenworth over .900.
So, for me, the offensive problem is fully the result of the disasters that Machado / Pham / Frazier (3/8th of the line-up) have become.

Quote from 3fingersplit on August 26, 2021, 8:36 amI never understood the Frazier deal....good player but did we really need him ?..... Unless of course the plan was to move Tatis Jr to the outfield, all he did was create a playing time problem.....Machado's motor runs at a different cycle than others , which can be good or bad depending on the day.....Meyers and Hosmer have been solid but not spectacular and given the way Andy Green almost destroyed their careers,I think they have bounced back just fine......The Manager ?.........expectations will kill you and this season is no exception.....I have always felt 2022 was going to be when the Padres made their move and this season is invaluable to the guys on this team because NOW they really know what a grind a 162 game schedule can be when expectations are high......Tingler is an improvment over Andy Green for sure....Green damn near ruined this team but the question I have always had was why on earth did the Padres fire Bud Black......he would have been perfect for the way this team is built now and he checks off all the boxes as opposed to Tingler and Opie Green.
Not being able to make a deal at the deadline hurt but the reasons are pretty clear......everybody loved giving up 3,4 or 5 guys in a trade including young pitchers except me and I made it very clear this massive overpay would come back to bite the Padres in the ass and it has.....didn't have much left behind the top four in the farm system that dropped from 1 / 2 to 17 but to Prellers credit he didn't fall into the massive overpay that the trade deadline has become especially for a 2 month rental......players you may have wanted that are rentals will be available in FA
Lastly we get to Pham....this season cannot end soon enough to see him gone in my opinion....the most I/Me selfish player I can ever remember in a Padre uniform.....This team will be better off getting that cancer out of the clubhouse.

Quote from fenn68 on August 26, 2021, 9:31 amFor the record I have not been on the Machado bandwagon even though all the national media loved him when he signed with the Padres. Not that he is not "good" but just not "great" to warrant that $300MM/10 year deal.
Just to pile on ... Machado has been in 29 post season games (115 AB) with Balt/LAD/SD with a combined slash line at 200/250/383 (.633 OPS) ... not the output one wants for a clean-up hitter on a playoff team.
======
Agree that Pham has got to be history at the end of the season ..... 2022 will likely have Myers-Grisham-Tatis with Profar backing and a PTNL to fill the 5 OF/DH options. A lot will change before then though.
