2021 In Season Trade Ideas
Quote from fenn68 on May 27, 2021, 4:59 amWith the best record in MLB ... not seeing the a significant trade now given the limited trade chips the Padres have to deploy and the uncertainty of future injury creating a hole.
Despite being best in the pen NOW (less than 1/3 into the season) ... the Padres have lost Pomeranz, Kela, Williams, Altavilla, Pomeranz, Morejon to injury since the season started. Have to be ready if the pen gets hit with more injuries. Padres are second in RP innings pitched (to TB) with Melancon and Stammen on pace to push 100 innings out of the pen (that is a big workload for a RP) .... have to be prepared for burnout and or (for someone like Stammen) return to his historical form.
Bottom line is that it is too early to use up trade chips ...

Quote from fenn68 on May 30, 2021, 11:12 amSomething to consider if the Padres make some moves in 2021 or in the winter setting up 2022 ... and maybe an issue for the development strategy in the minors ... MLB apparently is committed to return to the 13 pitcher limit in 2022 (and 13 position players). Possibly in the future go to 12 pitcher limit.
An issue with out of option pitchers with one less 26 man roster position .... Padres have a lot of out of option pitchers set for 2022. Flip side a bit short on ML quality bench players to go to 13 ... plus if the DH arrives (and no major need for PH) might be a factor in the type of position player they add.
This is apparently in reaction to ... in the past 10 years ... velocity on all pitches has risen about 4 MPH on average ... causing offense to go down ... pitchers going shorter (but all out for max velocity) to get to a RP with max velocity. I guess the idea is limiting the number of arms available ... may see a need to have pitchers go longer ... and with the need to go longer maybe (just maybe) the pitchers learn to actually pitch rather than just fire away?

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 7, 2021, 1:33 pmSo the word is we are still interested in Joey Gallo.
How does everyone feel about this?
He walks a lot and is a good defender but he isn't hitting much and I'm afraid the cost may
be too much for a guy not hitting.
The D-Backs have made it clear that David Peralta is available.
Guys like Adam Frazier and Brian Reynolds in Pittsburgh also....thinking Frazier to be a good leftfielder.
I don't know these guys contract info or or long they are signed for....so wouldn't pretend to know the cost.
Could we get Winker from Cincy?
Who and why and at what cost is your favorite outfielder to target?

So, Gallo is the dreaded 3 outcome guy, walk, strike out, HR. His OBP is really good this season which fits in with the newer SD philosophy. He has driven in 26 runs so far this season with 10 HRs. Still is only hitting .207 which is right around his ML history. And yes, from all accounts, you can put him in any OF position that you need, and has played both 3B an 1B nut not in awhile. He is a FA agent after the 2022 season, and arb eligible for 2022.
I would rather have Gallo out there than Pham defense wise, and probably bat wise as well. And for 2022, should be between $10-12M in salary, and they are paying Pham $10M this season.
In addition, I read on MLBTR or CBS, that TEX could be looking to move Kyle Gibson, and Ian Kennedy (who is having a really good season as a closer). So TEX could be a nice one stop shop for SD, getting them a LHH OFer, an innings eating starter, and a back end reliever.
But what would SD have to give up to get all 3? Thats the big question. I would say that Gore, Abrams, and Head are no gos, everyone else I would look at using, including Campusano.
Maybe Marcano, Campusano, and Lawson for Gallo, Gibson, and Kennedy.

Probably would take a lot to get Winker from CIN. He still has two years of control after this season, 2022 and 2023. He is only $3M in salary this season.
Plus, need to be careful that this seasons power is not an aberration, since the best HR total in his career, including MiLs is 17. So is the power real, a product of CIN home ball park, or ???? And has been closer to a .275 hitter than .300, but the OBP has always been good. So what are you buying in Winker, that is the big question.

Quote from fenn68 on June 7, 2021, 3:23 pmIn all those options (except maybe Peralta) they are controlled beyond 2021 … relatively young … relatively low cost … so the trade cost will be a bit more than a rental type.
Then add that IF the Padres are not trading Gore, Abrams, Campusano, or Hassell (and I wouldn’t for any of these guys … have to question the Padres ability to put together a package the selling team wants over an offer from another team.
For reference in 2021, Pham is sitting with a 0.8 WAR / 104 wRC+ / -1.1 dWAR.
That should kick out Peralta with a lower WAR, lower wRC+, worse dWAR at $7.5 MM this year and next.
Actually Pham’s dWAR is better than Winkler (-4.9), Gallo (-2.9), Reynolds (-1.7) … Frazier has been mainly an INF with (-2.5). So as awkward as Pham seems in the OF … statistically the alternatives are worse.
So it boils down to offense. Winkler has the bigger numbers but agree that may be a CINN park factor (actually most of the NL Central) … probably not a fit for PETCO.
Frazier realistically is an INF, so a gamble in the OF on a regular basis .. and maybe some of the same NL Central ballpark issue.
I would love Reynolds but don’t see the Pirates dealing him at a price the Padres would pay. Can play all the OF slots, only 26, 4 years control after 2021, now at league minimum, carrying a 2.0 WAR / 143 wRC+ … that is gold for PITT.
That gets us back to Gallo. His WAR is at 1.2 (slightly better than Pham) and his wRC+ is at 119 (slightly better than Pham). So despite his image, really not that compelling. At 6.2MM with one more year control. One concern is that is power stats seem to have diminished with the move to the new TEX park. However, I do think he would be worth adding (for the right price) since in 2021 health issues seem to be at the forefront over the full season with all the OF and, maybe more strategically, in 2022 with Pham gone and the DH arriving … Gallo at $9-10MM would be very useful as they seek to still add one more bat.

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 7, 2021, 7:12 pmWinker actually has 8 HR at home and 9 Away.
Could we get one of the Martes?
I’m guessing the Marlins won’t be sellers right away and that Ketel would cost a lot.... it may be worth it.
Campusano/Marcano/Oña for Ketel Marte?
Would the D Backs trade him in the NL West?

I would much rather have Ketel over Sterling. Switch hitter, and plays multiple positions.

Totally agree! Guys that play in Band Boxes - stay clear!(see: Ludwick, Ryan;Giles, Brian)
And HELL no to Gallo! Guy is a Sandy Alderson type- let the Mets grab him.
It took us how many years to figure out what type of player works best at Petco? Over 10?!
Athletic, ball to bat skills, speed, versatile........someone like Marte fits the Petco profile.

Quote from fenn68 on June 8, 2021, 5:17 amK. Marte would be a very good add. Doubt AZ would have a issue with dealing within the Division (if the price was right)
Marte does seem to be a Padre type: younger, versatile (OF/2B); switch-hitter; under control for 3 years after 2021 (last two year via club options at slightly over $10MM).
The control will make him hard to get without paying big and given AZ’s overall performance … probably a bundle of players.
====
side note: don’t think any of the upper level second tier prospect will hold much value in a trade and that includes Marcano (just minimal track record above low A), Ona (aging out of being a legit prospect and injured), Lawson (when was the last time he pitched). Being a catcher, Campusano will appeal but then probably have to dip down to the young A ball / Rookie level to fill out the deal.
