2021 In Season Trade Ideas

Love the ideas... keep 'em coming! Although as one of the elite teams in MLB right now, we are in that very rare place where there is not much we need!
Grossman first. Fenn, this was a good find, and he is decent value, but I'm going to say "Hard NO". He's just too much like Profar; SH, underpowered, although his career OBP is better as you said. Even the contracts are kind of similar: Don't want both guys overlapping 1 roster spot but glaring lack of power in LF for >10 MM in 2022.
Bryant a completely different story. Booster, I am now OBSESSED with getting Bryant for the long run as a FA this offseason. If Preller were able to squeeze him in (relatively low 1st yr salary; 2022 we're going into Tax penalty I think) & re-up Melancon for 1 year.... offseason basically done. Juggernaut best team in MLB on paper by a significant margin.
Trade is way less likely. Depends where Cubs stand at deadline. IF they're say 5 GB Cardinals AND the last Wildcard spot (NL West!) it's possible they just sell off all the pending FA to start the rebuild. Seems way less likely they are significant deadline buyers, but simply "Holding" (if they're say 3 GB playoff spot) does seem likely so the fan base doesn't revolt.
From Pads POV it would be awesome to get him, but very expensive in prospects & $. I agree that Pham might have to go back to offset $, but that would just cost more in prospects, and we are running out of guys to deal. Cubs probably not willing to get smoked on a "quantity vs. quality" deal like they just did for Darvish & Caratini 🙂

Heard an interview with Preller that really sounded like the are going to stick with Pham in LF .... still praising the OBP and “work ethic” rubbing off on the rest of the team. I suppose that could change if he is even worse through July.
Still think if the Cubs became sellers ... some other team would take the full Bryant remaining contract and offer a better deal than the Padres would. So, not going to hold my breath for a Bryant trade.
Over the winter ... as a FA ... maybe since if they re-sign Pham (don’t rule that out) ... they still could need another bat if the DH is coming. No idea what Bryant will try to get in a contract but he is having a great start to 2021 and will only be 30 next season ... have to think he is seeking he will go for at least 8 years with a $25 - 30MM AAV but probably more ... he is making $19.5 MM now in an arbitration year. The AAV is what impacts the luxury tax threshold ... so a problem for 2022 (unless the new CBA makes significant changes). Note: Scott Boras is Bryant’s agent ... so not an easy sign.

I would keep my eye out for a deal to get an impact RP. So far the pen has been great but Kela out with TJ ... Pomeranz out with injury and he seems to get injured a lot ... Pagan has just been OK ... not expecting a lot to come from the minors. Melancon - Stammen - Adams can do it all. No idea who but at the rate pitchers are getting injured ... might be the bigger need.

A name we have toss in some time back .... how about Mitch Haniger from Seattle .... 30 years old, 1.5 years control, $3MM contract, power hitter.
From what we have seen from Seattle ... they are not going to be a contender in 2021.
Probably could get away with 2-3 prospects (at least 1-2 good prospects) ... apparently they need 2B (Marcano?) and pitching is always a need which is about all the Padres have to offer in the upper minors. After missing 2020 hard to really judge the system pitchers ... so they are a bit of wild cards depending on Seattle’s view.

What about Joey Gallo? I know he is the new "typical" 3 outcome guy, walk, K, or HR. However, OBP is decent .365 this year, LHed pop, and from what I understand, can play all OF positions at an above average level of defense. He is a FA after the 2022 season and is at $6.2M this year and 2022 is his last arb year. I would imagine that he is not going to cost much more in salary than Pham in 2021 for his 2022 season. I would think in the aspect of defense and power, a big improvement over Pham.

Adding Gallo would also solve the DH issue for next year and his bat would allow us to get a speedy defensive minded outfielder instead to play LF.
Think an Austin Meadows/Charlie Blackmon type player rather than a Hunter Renfroe type.

Actually Gallo is a good OF ... got a gold glove (RF) a couple of years back ... big throwing arm as I recall. Has played some CF ... so with the way injuries are lining up in 2021 ... clearly an option.
Not really a big fan but it becomes a question of alternatives and what Texas would demand to make a deal. Padres are running out of quality trade chips from the full season clubs ... other teams could outbid easily if they wanted.
What is the max the Padres realistically offer and is that enough to sway Texas? For 1.5 years (at a reasonable cost) of a power hitting, plus defensive, former All-Star ... going to be at least one very good prospect.

Hard to guess a trade strategy during the season ... want to win in 2021 while keeping an eye out for 2022 ... not a lot of quality trade chips and a decision to make which ones to use in 2021 and which ones to use in the winter when there may be a bigger pool of players to fill needs going forward and which ones that will not be traded since they are the future.
Add that need to be careful not to use the key trade chips for player A too early and then have a more critical set of injuries in other positions that can't be covered.
Padres have some luxury of not panicking since they have the best record in MLB ... and although an OF upgrade is enticing ... beginning to get more worried about the pen ... Kela out for the season .... Pomeranz is at risk of being out for the season ... who knows about Altavilla / Williams ... Strahm also appears to be a long way off and unknown quality upon return.

The Padres currently lead all of mlb by 4/10 of a run in team ERA. That is a HUGE lead. The Padres lead mlb in both starter ERA and reliever ERA. I'm not sure that something is a trade need when it is the best in the sport.
