2021 In Season Trade Ideas

PreviousPage 4 of 16Next

After watching another botched night in CF by Profar.........

GO GET KETEL MARTE!!!!

Heres an idea for an OF upgrade. Should not cost a lot in trade value, can play all 3 OF spots, and is familiar with the NL West.

Joc Pederson. Against LHP he is not great so you can start or use Profar. However, versus RHP he has hit all 7 of his HRs, batting .245, with an OBP of .324, and .455 slugging. His is $4.5M in salary this season, with a $2.5M buyout or a $10M mutual option for 2022.

IMO he would be a much better option for trolling CF over Profar, and has more power for PH duties over Profar as well.

Considering the Cubs are virtually tied for the NL Central lead and tied in the loss column with the Padres .... more likely buyers than sellers for now. Think they had the best record in the league for May.

Another one stop shop for all 3 of SD upgrades needs could be BAL. Getting SP John Means, RP Paul Fry, and OFer Anthony Santander or Mancini. Both pitchers are LH (helpful vs LAD line up), and all three are controllable through the 2024 season. That makes them both valuable and expensive. It would cost a lot to get them, and Im sure that BAL would have very little interest in Campusano with Rutschman in BAL. So that means that and trade would certainly be based around either Gore or Abrams.

Would you be willing to trade one of those two to get that package from BAL?

Or, is the BAL system still lacking enough to where BAL would be willing to go quantity over quality, with a package built around guys like Marcano, Lawson, Schlottens, etc.?

Okay, don't shoot! Things are a bit slow around here and my mind is wandering......but......

With deGrom possibly going down in NY( AND them needing another starter anyway), how about offering Snell to the Mets in exchange for Joey Lucchesi and a low level promising prospect( any position)

Mets say yes because they believe Blake can still be that CY pitcher he was a few years ago, and with the East being so bad, they still have a shot.

Padres say yes because we get an innings eater who takes the hill every 5th day, plus the obvious prospect we all know Preller loves.

Who says no first?

Preller probably says no with the “hope” Snell can still return to his “norm” while Lucchessi is just who he is with no real upside. Doubt Mets would give up any quality prospect.

So far this season:

AT PETCO: 6 starts / 32.2 innings …. 1.65 ERA / 0.98 WHIP

AWAY: 8 starts / 28.2 innings … 10.36 EAR / 2.33 WHIP

That is a bizarre split! (Actually reminds me of Lucchesi’s splits).

========

Now I would move on from Snell since even before this season, his performance except for his Cy Young season has not been all that compelling. Even Preller can make a bad deal.

With his contract ($13MM in 2022 / $16MM in 2023) coupled with performance …. Going to be hard to move him unless he gets on a good roll. Plus needs to go to a team that has money and cap space.

Hard to get anyone to deal for him now … maybe in the winter … and just be happy if they can get out of the contract. 2022 his slot could  be filled by Weathers, Clevinger, or Gore.

The Padres are not going to trade Snell. They need every arm that they can get their hands on right now and Snell still has premium talent.

We need an OF who can be our regular corner OF in 2022, can play CF when needed and is a plus bat. My vote is Bryan Reynolds. Yes he will be expensive but I am sure he will be quite a bit cheaper than Ketel Marte. The price for Marte will be huge just based on his 1 huge season. We should be able to get him without using Gore or Abrams. Probably Campusano and a couple of others. If we are going to trade a big prospect like Campusano we need to get a guy with a few years of control.

Reynolds would be a great get … but how much to get him out of Pitt?

Reynolds is 26 … at league minimum … producing at the ML level … and with FOUR years control. That is a valuable package as a trade chip for PITT since they have no need to trade him.

Since I would not trade Weathers,  Abrams or Hassell … the Padres may have to use Campusano AND Gore (both unproven vs Reynolds). Not sure what PITT needs (and who they like) … but … and this is hard to suggest …. Cronenworth (with either Abrams or Marcano taking 2B in 2022?). Maybe Paddack? Sub a young controllable ML player for one of the prospects.

Reynolds will be cheaper than Ketel Marte. I think Marte might require a Gore+ kind of package, but not Reynolds. The Padres will not trade anyone who is currently essential to their team including Cronenworth, Paddack and Weathers. Not for anybody outside of Mike Trout.

Let's not forget that the Padres wouldn't trade Gore for Thor when he was one of the best pitchers in baseball. I can see them MAYBE trading Campusano and Hassell only considering that Reynolds will be the direct replacement for Hassell. I just don't see Reynolds costing a top 10 in mlb type of prospect.

I am looking at it from PITT’s perspective and what they would take given they have little desire to deal Reynolds (four years control at league minimum) in 2021 for just one top prospect with no guarantee of success and only six years control IF he makes the ML and is successful. Agree he would not get a Top 10 type but a lot more than just one in the Top 100 (e.g. Campusano).

Side note: given the poor performance of Gore so far this season and all the reports of his struggles at the alternate site last year … is he still going to be a Top 10 prospect when the next rankings come out?

Doubt the Padres go for a major bat at the trade deadline … maybe a bench up-grade … and then this winter (post-Pham and plus DH) open their horizons for OF bats.

More likely the take their limited trade chips and focus on relief pitching.
