2020 Team Roster and Season
Quote from TatisJr on September 17, 2019, 11:50 amI think it was Acee who said the Padres would be looking for a catcher in the offseason. I personally would be fine with Mejia catching 70-75 percent of the games and Hedges handling the rest. I like the offensive/defensive combo they bring. That being said, Hedges complete ineptitude with the bat does make me pull my hair out and I wouldn’t be sad if he was moved. One name that came to mind after the Acee article was Salvador Perez. He’s coming off of TJ which is a concern . He is under contract for two more years 2020, 2021 at a very reasonable 13 mill per season. Power bat, Gold Glover and has a history of working well with young pitchers. He could be a good mentor and combo mate with Mejia until Campusano is ready to takeover as the guy. Would KC bite on a Hedges, Lauer,Jank plus a prospect? Maybe sweeten the pot and see if they would eat some bucks on the deal. I believe I read KC was opposed to eating money on any deal, but maybe they would if we kicked in a young talent they really liked.

Quote from BoosterSD on September 17, 2019, 7:31 pmI dont think there is anything short of Gore that could get Perez out of KC. I have a couple of interviews with FO people from KC, and they love Perez. They see him as the key to their next rise to success.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 17, 2019, 8:14 pmThey would ask for both Gore and Mejia. They wouldn't trade Perez without having a replacement. They would have all the power in that trade; if we don't absolutely blow them away, they just walk away.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 17, 2019, 8:20 pmOur catching is set people. We will not be making any trades to upgrade that position. Our catching next year will be above average to well above average. We are overloaded at catcher. Our only trade possibilities are starter and possibly OF.

Quote from fenn68 on September 18, 2019, 5:12 amAre we sure really sure that is not a comment from last winter? Given all the areas that need improvement (see OF, SP) why would the Padres use their limited trade assets and take on more payroll for a catcher when they have a pipeline of Hedges - Mejia - Allen - Torrens - Campusano - Hunt.
More likely the Padres may be looking to trade a catcher ... Torrens is getting a lot of praise for his all around development since 2017 as he was recalled the other day and could actually jump into the #2 catcher role behind Mejia in 2020. That would make Hedges (can’t hit, salary on the rise, control shortening —- but the best defensive catcher) and Allen (can’t play defense, hit in AAA but not getting the reps in ML, ”older” rookie). About all the other 29 teams want to upgrade their catching (at least the back-up) so would expect a market for both (at least as part of a multi-player deal).
IF they added a catcher ... would likely be a back-up veteran with decent defense but actually can hit just a little allowing for the trading of Hedges and Allen while giving Torrens some AAA time if needed.

We are soon going to be in a position where we "have" to make 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 deals to make roster room.
We can't have 4-5 Catchers on the 40 man for long.
Hedges/Mejia/Allen/Torrens with Campusano on the way.
Someones getting traded for "something".

Quote from fenn68 on September 18, 2019, 6:57 amYep, probably going to see more trades like Reyes / Allen for Trammell .... 2 for 1 with the 1 return arguably the highest ceiling prospect of the bunch. That is a good thing.
Three (40 man roster types) are a bit harder to move for one roster (or a non-roster) type given other teams have similar roster issues. Might work if dealing with a BAD team with no farm system ... if they have anything to trade for.
Might also see some of the “marginal” Padres just get dealt for non-roster type in A ball ... does seem to be a strength of Preller and ferreting out quality future prospects (see Paddack).
Agree on catchers being moved. Guess the are locking in on Mejia (for now) and IF as I suspect they like the future with Torrens and Campusano in 2021-22 (control, low cost, high upside) ... we could see some set-up moves of Allen and Hedges.
Between now and the Winter Meetings ... Preller should be very active.

Quote from fenn68 on September 18, 2019, 7:03 amNot sure when the trade window opens. Have not clearly seen whether it is at the end of the regular season or after the World Series. Post World Series is normally where the initial 40 man is set and as I recall FA become FA. If the trade window opens then ... is there a tiny opening to swing deals before setting the initial 40 man roster?
Either way Preller has to be working deals (even on a preliminary basis) well before that window opens and if at the end of the World Series we could see a flurry of deals being announced.
Anyone with any insight on the opening of the trade window?

Quote from fenn68 on September 18, 2019, 8:47 amOne observation / concern about future adds of ML level players .... past track record.
First I give the Padres organization the top marks for their scouting and development of players acquired in the draft, International market, and minor leaguers via trade. Took (as expected) a couple of years to get all the organization people / processes in place but over the past few years .... consistently good with high ceiling talent.
Having said that, not seeing that insight with the veteran ML talent adds. I keep thinking of Norris, Kinsler, Kemp, JUpton, BJUpton, Shields, Hughes .... Then we have the ongoing discussion of Myers. Even Hosmer and Machado who are legit ML quality are over paid / long term for their production.
Are the Padres jumping the gun this winter and forcing deals for a "veteran SP" or a "veteran OF" utilizing payroll space and/or legit prospects to get less than hoped results for a team that needs a lot to come together to contend.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 18, 2019, 8:53 am40 man (51 players including 60 day) needs to be set at 40 FIVE days after WS ... This includes protecting some if any of would be rule V guys..so just to get to 40 11 need to be traded or cut ..to protect some would be rule V dudes Guerra? Bolanos? Cordoba? Etc..additional cuts would be needed.. Out of those 11.. Warren and Stanmen are FA to be I believe.. So net 9.. It will be interesting for sure.. I believe trades can begin after game 162 has been played..although most wait until after postseason so as to not steal spotlight .. But I can see AJP doing a couole of 3 for 1 type trades..big and small to open up the 40 man a bit
