I dont think there is anything short of Gore that could get Perez out of KC. I have a couple of interviews with FO people from KC, and they love Perez. They see him as the key to their next rise to success.

More likely the Padres may be looking to trade a catcher ... Torrens is getting a lot of praise for his all around development since 2017 as he was recalled the other day and could actually jump into the #2 catcher role behind Mejia in 2020. That would make Hedges (can’t hit, salary on the rise, control shortening —- but the best defensive catcher) and Allen (can’t play defense, hit in AAA but not getting the reps in ML, ”older” rookie). About all the other 29 teams want to upgrade their catching (at least the back-up) so would expect a market for both (at least as part of a multi-player deal).

IF they added a catcher ... would likely be a back-up veteran with decent defense but actually can hit just a little allowing for the trading of Hedges and Allen while giving Torrens some AAA time if needed.

We are soon going to be in a position where we "have" to make 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 deals to make roster room.

We can't have 4-5 Catchers on the 40 man for long.

Hedges/Mejia/Allen/Torrens with Campusano on the way.

Three (40 man roster types) are a bit harder to move for one roster (or a non-roster) type given other teams have similar roster issues. Might work if dealing with a BAD team with no farm system ... if they have anything to trade for.

Might also see some of the “marginal” Padres just get dealt for non-roster type in A ball ... does seem to be a strength of Preller and ferreting out quality future prospects (see Paddack).

Agree on catchers being moved. Guess the are locking in on Mejia (for now) and IF as I suspect they like the future with Torrens and Campusano in 2021-22 (control, low cost, high upside) ... we could see some set-up moves of Allen and Hedges.

Between now and the Winter Meetings ... Preller should be very active.

Either way Preller has to be working deals (even on a preliminary basis) well before that window opens and if at the end of the World Series we could see a flurry of deals being announced.

First I give the Padres organization the top marks for their scouting and development of players acquired in the draft, International market, and minor leaguers via trade. Took (as expected) a couple of years to get all the organization people / processes in place but over the past few years .... consistently good with high ceiling talent.

Having said that, not seeing that insight with the veteran ML talent adds. I keep thinking of Norris, Kinsler, Kemp, JUpton, BJUpton, Shields, Hughes .... Then we have the ongoing discussion of Myers. Even Hosmer and Machado who are legit ML quality are over paid / long term for their production.

Are the Padres jumping the gun this winter and forcing deals for a "veteran SP" or a "veteran OF" utilizing payroll space and/or legit prospects to get less than hoped results for a team that needs a lot to come together to contend.
