2020 Team Roster and Season
Quote from Brian Connelly on September 18, 2019, 10:11 amQuote from fenn68 on September 18, 2019, 7:03 amNot sure when the trade window opens. Have not clearly seen whether it is at the end of the regular season or after the World Series. Post World Series is normally where the initial 40 man is set and as I recall FA become FA. If the trade window opens then ... is there a tiny opening to swing deals before setting the initial 40 man roster?
Either way Preller has to be working deals (even on a preliminary basis) well before that window opens and if at the end of the World Series we could see a flurry of deals being announced.
Anyone with any insight on the opening of the trade window?
Don't know when it officially opens, but seems like Trades don't really start heating up & happening until Dec/Jan?

Given all the areas that need improvement (see OF, SP) why would the Padres use their limited trade assets and take on more payroll for a catcher when they have a pipeline of Hedges - Mejia - Allen - Torrens - Campusano - Hunt.
Acee says in his September 5th 2019 article “A top-0f-the-rotation starting pitcher, an offensive outfielder, and a catcher are on the Padres offseason to-do list.”
Like I said I’m fine with current catching group as long as Hedges is viewed as a backup and Mejia gets the bulk of time. Is Mejia a good defensive catcher? No, but I saw a lot of growth from him defensively from spring training to the end of the season. Remember now, the Pads were in the mix and aggressive in their pursuit of JT Realmuto last year. I know KC LOVES Perez, but his age and contract status don’t line up with their rebuild and contention window. KC also has a lot of holes and they don’t have a top 10 farm system. The Padres have a 40 man crunch and tons of young talent across the board. I’m not saying it will happen, but they could line up on a Perez deal if AJP is set on getting a top notch catcher for 2020,2021. If KC wanted Gore for 2 years of Perez coming off of TJ that would be a big hell no from AJP. I was thinking Hedges, Jank, Lauer, Morejon or Weathers for two years of Perez. I don’t see the catching market for Perez being as competitive as it was for Realmuto last year, but in KC Perez is a fan favorite and last big piece of Royals title team.

Normally the Winter Meetings are the key period for setting up and/or executing trades ... so maybe the bigger deals will not come early.
However, since Preller needs to move a minimum of 11 (maybe more with some Rule 5 protects) ... he may be very aggressive in trying to make a deal sooner. Yes, he could get away with just a series of DFAs .... probably without any critical losses but if he can pull some smaller deals (maybe for a potential DFA OR a player not positioned for DFA but allowing the Padres to avoid a DFA and pick up a useful player).
Other teams may be willing to play if they can get someone they want rather than trying to hope they get DFA'd and then get them to sign with them vs. another team. Maybe we see some Padres dealt for a low A / Rookie League / DSL in this phase.

Wasn't that about the same as last season's to-do list? Well food for discussion I guess.
The only piece I agree with is a OF with offense in mind ... at least for 2020. Ownership may have wanted 2020 to be "the year" but the under performance of the offense basically across the board needs a number of the existing players to develop / step up before wasting assets on a top of the rotation arm. Zero need of a catcher other than as filler if they deal Hedges and Allen. Pitching .. leave the window open for the elite Padre prospect to get to the ML in 2020 and set up a long future run (Gore, Patino, linked with Paddack, Lamet, and Lucchesi).
Given it is from Acee take with the understanding he does like to throw out ideas to spur debate as much as reporting fact.

Quote from BoosterSD on September 19, 2019, 5:57 amSo I would agree that at this time, it looks as if our top 3 arms heading into next season are Richards, Paddock, and Lamet. With that said, if the Pads stand pat, and everyone stays healthy through ST, I would like to see the rotation line up like this. Richards, Luchessi, Paddock, Lauer, Lamet. I know that both Paddock and Lamet are better than the two lefties. However, IMO it would better serve all to change up the look, rather than throwing 3 hard righties in a row and then two soft tossing lefties in a row.
Next fix the OF offense.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 19, 2019, 10:21 amLet's not forget that if Richards stays healthy and pitches well I'm sure him staying on a couple more seasons could easily be worked out.
He has to have some kind of loyalty to the team that paid him nearly $8 mil. just to rehab.
I would still like to see us work out a trade with the Braves for Ender Inciarte.
I don't know if he can stay healthy but given his injury history it shouldn't cost us "that" much.
Plus they have a couple stud Outfielders coming up he may be dispensable.
They have a OF still a few years away I'd love to have....Justin Dean.
Small guy with 80 speed......my favorite tool.(:

“Easily”! Nothing is easy dealing with contracts unless it comes with a pile of dead presidents. At his age, his next contact may be his last chance at top dollar deal ... especially if he is coming off a quality 2020.
If offers are reasonable equal, his time with SD may be the deciding factor to stay. His loyalty will be with his family and their future. Think players understand the teams don’t have loyalty to players unless they are performing. Ask some of the veteran Padres who will get DFA’d this winter.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 19, 2019, 12:03 pmLike you said Fenn "nothing is easy". That includes Inciarte. The Braves don't need him anymore but they will still be looking to maximize their return. He will be anything but cheap. They would probably demand Patino or Campusano.
