In the past 30 days he has posted a .351 OBP and considering how much we were troubled by the Padres need players to get on base ... Urias is providing what they need.
Add that from what I have seen ... his range, arm, and glove work will make him one of the better 2B defensively in MLB.
As a very young rookie ... he may be heading towards projection as a plus ML 2B.
I too think Uriias is showing himself to be the guy to beat for 2b next Spring.
It's "his job to lose".
But does he turn into the #2 hitter we all hoped/thought he would be or the #8 hitter he has been so far?
I think that is what he will prove next season.....SO hope it's the former.
I think his spot in the line up is based on who is manager next season. Who knows with AG, I think his line ups are pulled out of a hat to be honest. If we have a real manager next season, I think Urias can be a #2 batting order guy.

Quote from TatisJr on September 11, 2019, 6:00 pmI’d be surprised if it wasn’t Tatis,Urias,Machado,Hosmer as the 1-4 to open 2020. If Urias is traded or doesn’t develop like he’s supposed to I’d like to see Hosmer in the 2 hole in front of Machado. I agree with Fenn, I don’t see Tatis leaving the 1 spot anytime soon. His speed and aggressiveness on the base paths was one of the Pads greatest weapons this year.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 11, 2019, 7:10 pmExactly. Probably not to open the year though. Urias will have to prove himself first, but that is the ultimate lineup. Leave the lower BA and OBP in the lower slots in the lineup.

Quote from fenn68 on September 15, 2019, 7:42 amAny word on Franchy Cordero’s current health and if he will get some playing time in a Fall Instructs or in winter ball?
After 2 years of injuries and very limited play ... would think he would benefit of some work before ST to at least give him a chance of making the 2020 roster. I guess the Padres would benefit to see if he can stay healthy to justify keeping him as a future OF option.
He should be in the LHH OF mix with Jankowski - Martini - Naylor but needs to earn it on the field. 40 man rosters being what they are .... can’t expect to carry all four without shorting some other position(s).

Quote from fenn68 on September 15, 2019, 10:12 amCould Kluber resurface as a Padre target this winter ... gamble on his rebound to Cy Young (or near) level?
After over 5 years of Cy Young quality ... 2019 has been a disaster with just a very poor start then a broken right forearm and now an oblique strain. He will be 34 next season and his injuries are not elbow or shoulder. Since he has two more club option years to go at $17.5MM and $18MM is would be a bargain if in form and disposable before 2021 if not ... lowering the risk factor.
Would Cleveland move him (at a reasonable price) ... probably yes. First, they have been in contention in 2019 with a strong pitching staff and sub-par offense in the OF plus their top OF is now out for about 9 month with injury. Second, they would very much like to reduce payroll even more (apparently really squeezed financially after, for them, spending high in the past few years) so avoiding the $17.5MM is appealing. Third they need some prospects to bolster a mediocre farm system. Cleveland is not going to spend big in FA.
Enter the Padres with a past expressed interest in Kluber ... a track record of dealing with Cleveland .... and OFers and prospects that are good (and low cost).
IF the Padres will take the salary ... might swing a deal without dealing any mega prospect talent and utilize volume of “good” talent in some combo. Remember, if Cleveland holds on him they have to eat the $17.5MM and take the risk of him not rebounding and getting nothing for him down the road.
A risk play with high upside and low downside if he is acquired without yielding any critical talent from SD.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 15, 2019, 1:56 pmWho are these good OFs that we have to spare? I have seen constant complaints on this forum on how badly we need to upgrade the outfield. I doubt Cleveland would want anybody we would be willing to surrender. Teams don't make trades just for the fun of it, there has to be real need. Cleveland will price Kluber like he is a current CY Young winner and price him as such. Just like the trade deadline when Syndergaard was terrible, the Mets still not only wanted but fully expected to get an absolute kings ransom for him. Cleveland will be the same. Nobody ever sets a reasonable price. A GM would get fired for even suggesting that.

Probably right but don’t under estimate the desire of Cleveland to lower payroll by moving $17.5 MM on a 34 year old who did nothing for them in the 2019 pennant run.
Consider they moved a highly productive Bauer (and his contract) for 1 year of Puig, DH Reyes, minor league pitcher Allen, and another low level minor leaguer and this was while in contention. Bauer had / has the other issues but he was ”available” before the ball to CF throw.
Cleveland will still try to contend in 2020 and they need and they need improvement at C, 2B or SS depending where they put Ramirez, and 3 OF slots. Good chance they prioritize contending in 2020 over maximizing the return by holding on Kluber. The Padres issue is other teams that may be bidding in a buy low but still with stronger offers.
Syndergaard was very different .... young ... healthy ... low cost .... 2+ years control ... and on a team that (at that time) was not in contention so not pressure to move him.
Agree the OF trade chips are not compelling individually .... and too bad Renfroe tanked in the 2nd half ... but as part of a bundle with other ML players (France / prospects like Austin Allen, and one or more RP) and needed CF such as Margot might be more valuable to Cleveland than nursing (and taking the risk, contract) on Kluber.
Not suggesting those specifics but structure-wise that may be the best Cleveland can do after Kluber’s 2019.

Padres -- Manuel Margot, CF: He survived the crowded outfield situation and may blossom in 2020 as the rest of his young team matures along with him. He just didn't do it this year, putting up offensive numbers on par with what they've been so far in his young career, including a .721 OPS with 12 homers.
If not Margot, who? I guess my pick would be Urias, but they probably limited themselves to "qualifiers", which makes sense for their list.

Based on MLB's rankings of rookie potential and future value, Pads are doing well with 4 of the top 16 (Tatis, Paddack, Urias and Mejia)
