2020 Team Roster and Season
Quote from MrPadre19 on September 11, 2019, 11:59 amQuote from fenn68 on September 11, 2019, 4:15 amLooks as though Urias is settling in a bit in the ML. In the past 30 days he has posted a .351 OBP and considering how much we were troubled by the Padres need players to get on base ... Urias is providing what they need.
Add that from what I have seen ... his range, arm, and glove work will make him one of the better 2B defensively in MLB.
As a very young rookie ... he may be heading towards projection as a plus ML 2B.
I too think Uriias is showing himself to be the guy to beat for 2b next Spring.
It's "his job to lose".
But does he turn into the #2 hitter we all hoped/thought he would be or the #8 hitter he has been so far?
I think that is what he will prove next season.....SO hope it's the former.

100% agree ... Martini is a mini-Markakis ... he's a keeper (with the caveat that I'm not saying he's a good *starting* OFer ... rather he's a good #4 or #5 ... and probably one of our best 3 OFers right now, and that needs to change, not by getting rid of him, but by getting better OFers to start).

Quote from JasonE135 on September 11, 2019, 1:36 pmEveryone new guy starts at the bottom of the order. Tat is wasn't hitting leadoff out of the gate. I think Urias will be hitting #2 by mid to late next year. The kid is going to hit. I mean everyone thought the guy would hit .300. Even if he hits .286 that would be second best on out team. Once he is comfortable he will prove himself. Kinsler turned out to be a bad idea. Urias just needs to know the position is his so he doesn't have to worry about "will I be playing tomorrow?" Let him play every game so he can get his bat going. This "playing the matchup" crap doesn't let anyone get comfortable or get into a groove. Young guys especially need that.

He is making his case to hang around as a LHH reserve ... sort of the Greg Garcia of the OF. I guess he could handle some CF if needed but even in the minors a LF (without much power or speed which is probably why at 29 has just a cup of coffee in the ML).
He does have the value of minor league options and being league minimum, so low cost flexibility for the roster. Maybe pushing out the better fielder in Jankowski (more expensive, out of options) but who is a lesser hitter.

Quote from fenn68 on September 11, 2019, 1:48 pmUrias is showing the plate discipline for a quality #2 hitter considering he is hitting ahead of the pitcher and still has the ability to take that walk / and generate an above average OBP without a high BA. Does not strikeout too much and goes to RF which with speed at the leadoff spot ... a lot of 1st to 3rd potential.
We will see ... he needs the opportunity (with hot and cold spells) to fully develop ... only 22.

Quote from fenn68 on September 11, 2019, 2:15 pmAs for a winter of trades / FA signings ... specifically "top talent" .... I am not ready to go that route (baring some kind of "steal").
Padres have a lot of potentially elite talent on the near term horizon (but no idea who emerges) while the payroll likely only has room for one more major costly add. In that scenario, paying that extra price for one last piece makes sense if that piece is targeted at the last real need to take them over the top. At this point they don't know where that need will emerge.
Considering that in the next few years, overtaking the Dodgers for the NL West is a long shot and Padres will be jockeying for a Wild Card berth (and the one and one risk). Even then the Padres are currently in the bottom half of the NL in runs scored and runs allowed ... suggesting a lot of needs. Have to bet on the internal top prospects to cover most of those needs ... once the get a good read on who succeeds ... roll the dice on filling in the missing part(s).
Personally would bite the bullet and just go with the kid pitchers with elite potential ... a lot of arms viewed as upper half of the rotation (Gore, Patino, Paddack, Lamet, etc.) who will be around for years and dirt cheap. INF/C looks to be set for now with potential upgrades moving up (Arias, Edwards, Miller).
Sort of focuses me now on OF (if true upgrades are available). Would not give up any elite internal prospects to get an OF upgrade (or even potential upgrade). Best hope is another Trammel type deal ... using to non-critical prospects in Reyes and Allen for high potential or for a quality ML piece and taking on some salary.
Padres might be best served by using the start of 2020 to get a better read on what they have (and need) and focus their deal making at the deadline or next winter.

I've been drooling for years over Urias as a #2 hitter approximating prime years Mark Loretta...
But that was before Tatis hit .315/.375/whatever leading off AND we signed Machado and carved his name in stone #3...
I NEVER thought Tatis would come out of the gate leading entire team including 30/20/20 MM guys Machado, Hosmer, & Myers by a mile in both Avg and OBP....
I feel strongly that despite the inarguable fact that Tatis is a great catalyst that his power is wasted in the leadoff (then behind P) spot... so despite his relatively high K rate, I'm wondering if HE is our # 2 hitter to begin next year with likely a platooning RH/LH hitter batting 1st: Margot vs. LHP, ? vs RHP. Urias not ideal speed #1, but possibly with low K, high OBP, see a lot of pitches?

.286?
He just got himself over .186.
😉

Quote from JasonE135 on September 11, 2019, 3:41 pmHe will hit over .286 once he gets going. I am saying that we only have 3 guys with BA over .250, and .250 is garbage. Urias will hit over .250. He will be one of our better hitters.

Quote from fenn68 on September 11, 2019, 4:19 pmTatis will be the lead-off hitter for some time to come. He is a major disruptor with not just the speed but the audacity to use it throwing off the SP right out of the blocks ... don't really want anyone on base ahead of him slowing him down. Add that a lead-off HR immediately changes the game strategy. Tatis on the bases sets up better pitches for the middle of the order.
With Tatis on base ... need a #2 hitter that makes contact (preferably to RF) and puts Tatis in motion ... 1st to 3rd might become common place giving Machado / Hosmer RBI opportunities. Need to keep the K bats down in the line-up (Myers, Renfroe, Hedges).
Maybe at some point a Edwards / Trammel / Abrams type fits lead-off allowing Tatis to drop down but for now ... Margot / Jankowski don't cut it as table setters.
