2020 Team Roster and Season

PreviousPage 4 of 22Next

I think we have to give him a few years. Nothing is worse for a team than playing musical coaches/managers. They guys, especially young guys need 1 voice, they need to have 1 way of doing things that they can get used to and comfortable with. They can't change everything they are doing every year. The pen will be getting very good very quickly. We have a lot of bullpen arms in the minors with great stuff. Munoz figured it out, at least 1 or 2 others will too. We also have an overabundance of starting arms who will be in the pen if they don't make the starting five.

I don’t think playing musical chairs with coaching staffs or managers is a good thing, but if that voice isn’t respected and the players don’t have confidence in him, what’s the point of bringing him back when we are looking to contend?

I like what I've seen/heard from Andy Green, the man ... and ... I believe he is not the guy to lead / field manage the Padres into the 20's.  It's a tough call ... and one I trust AJ+ to make ... and at this point, we, as Padres' fans, have to trust that ... if we don't, then now is the time to be calling for AJ's head, too (replaced by Dombrowski, for example) ... but I think AJ has earned the right to drive the bus for 5+ more years ... and so if he sticks with AG, then AG is the man.  I won't be surprised if AJ finds someone to replace AG ... that's my hope.

I've mentioned AJ Ellis as the guy I think will take over in the event AG is let go.  Still think that. What about Rod Barajas as an alternative or do you see them going outside the organization?  Maddon, Mattingly, Girardi should be available. How about not an old white guy (I fit this demographic)?

Re the defense (mostly OF) and baserunning, that's Schumacher's assignment.  And I let him hear it every game I am at (sit close).

I'll throw a guys name that would not only be fun BUT is Latino.... OZZIE GUILLEN

Now lets talk November-- 5 days after WS we have to make a decision on 40 man roster-- if you include 60 day DL we have 51 players so 11 need to be cut, or traded just to get to 40 (then rule V types need to be protected as well so may need another 2-3 spots) -- and still need to make room for maybe a FA or 2 acquisition... so I could see AJP making a deal or 2 early (during postseason or shortly 1 or 2 days after), because 5 days after WS 40 man needs to be set...

Word out of FO in SD is that they are looking to add TWO SP to the team-- 1 TOR and 1 mid rotation type, an OF, 2B and perhaps a Catcher with offensive skills? so we shall see-- The Catcher one is interesting-- it could mean a deal involving Mejia or Hedges probably was discussed with a team or 2 leading to the lineup and likely put on "we will revisit in offseason" status..

Another thing to look for is teams with new GMs (ie Boston) I wouldnt be surprised if Ownership would instruct such GM to lower payroll (Luxury tax and begin building their minor league pipeline again)... I proposed a David Price + Benintendi type acquisition -- one that includes Myers going to Boston to offset $$ (Myers in Boston, likely becomes a superstar, but thats fine with me) + Joey Lucchesi + Naylor (DH/OF type better fit in AL and not needed with Benintendi in SD and Trammell soon there too) + probably would need Q + Reed + Nix and a high upside dude like Arias added to the mix-- Boston gets $12 mil in $$$ relief Nets +2 26 man roster dudes 2 position players 2 SP MLB ready, controllable and cheap and a trio of minor leaguers 2 with upside and 1 with All Star type skills (Arias) at the SS position... overall a win/win as we would check 2 off-season Boxes here.. TOR type lefty arm and elite OBP skilled COF lefty who (like Yelich) has a lot more in him than what he has shown so far in Boston.. add a Cole Hamels in FA and all of the sudden,,,, Richards/Price/Paddack/Hamels/Lamet has a terrific look to it, with Gore/Patino/Bolanos/Lauer/Cantillo/ etc... all in the mix as early as April / or in the BP to begin the yr...

AJP could then focus on a Lindor (rumor has it he will be moved in offseason) /Whit (another new ownership type move)  type 2B in the trade market--

imagine a lineup of

  1. Tatis jr SS
  2. Lindor 2B
  3. Machado 3B
  4. Hosmer 1B
  5. Benintendi LF
  6. Renfroe RF*
  7. Mejia/Hedges C
  8. Margot CF*

Both Margot and Renfroe could still be upgraded if AJP sees a chance to do so (one age move might be Brantley (Hou) he might be available since Tucker (another one who might be available) is likely ready to go now in Houston and that OF is jammed pack.. with 1 yr left at $16mil Brantley brings high BA/OBP and Defense to the table and another lefty bat.. and with 1 yr left represents the perfect gap acquisition for bridging from him to Trammell,, Pads could keep him +1 yr rather easily with a Q offer as well if they saw the need/value in doing so beyond 2020... In any case that is one hell of an upgrade to our SP and everyday lineup with just a few moves, without destroying our farm (Gore, patino, CJ, Cantillo, Campusano, Edwards, Trammell, etc.. still here)

No chance on Earth that will ever happen but if you are going to dream, dream big.

Maybe, for lack of options, Travis J becomes our LH CF?

I know it certainly doesn't look like it but maybe the team wants to see Manny one last time? Sounds daft, I know, but maybe the reason TJ isn't playing at all is they know what they have in him. But as Manny has the more upside, the team was hoping Margot would turn into the player they had hoped. Unfortunately, he hasn't. Park Jankowski in CF next year and prepare for Trammell in 2021.

They pretty much know what they have with both. Travis doesn't hit enough to start period. Margot only hits left-handers enough to start against them. Both give us great defense. We need a CF to start against RH pitchers, which is most of the time. Thus we have Taylor Trammell. We will have to live with what we have until Trammell gets here.

I know this won’t be exciting to most, but I think the Padres outfield situation is good enough to be competitive in 2020. Even if they elect a platoon situation with Margot, Myers, Renfroe, Cordero, Martini and Naylor I would be fine with that heading into 2020. Each guy has at least a flaw or two in their game, but collectively I think it’s a good group of ball players. Renfroe mashes lefties and is a plus defender. Myers is a great athlete, with a good mixture of power and speed. I had high hopes for Margot offensively and it hasn’t really panned out, but I LOVE watching him patrol centerfield. The guy is smooth and covers tons of ground which we all know is important in Petco. Naylors bat has impressed me in his rookie campaign. He has power, he goes with the outside pitch and has a good eye from the left side of dish. Even though he doesn’t look like it, the guy is a good athlete, he moves  pretty well for a big guy and hes got a strong arm. I think with more time in the outfield and learning to hit his cut off man the defense will improve. Will he be great? No, but I think his defense will improve. I wish Martini had more pop or the speed to play center. However, the guy is a smart hitter and knows how to get on base. His awareness of the strike zone and his smooth contact stroke are fun to watch. We all know Franchy has the tools to be a stud, just not sure if his health will allow us to ever see it.

Padres just really need a SP, a stopper (a Kershaw, Buheler, Greinke, Verlander, Cole, Madbum,Degrom, etc).

The position side will be fine, there are no perfect lineups.

Go Pads!!!
