2020 Team Roster and Season
Quote from MrPadre19 on September 10, 2019, 3:56 pmQuote from TatisJr on September 10, 2019, 3:19 pmI know this won’t be exciting to most, but I think the Padres outfield situation is good enough to be competitive in 2020. Even if they elect a platoon situation with Margot, Myers, Renfroe, Cordero, Martini and Naylor I would be fine with that heading into 2020. Each guy has at least a flaw or two in their game, but collectively I think it’s a good group of ball players. Renfroe mashes lefties and is a plus defender. Myers is a great athlete, with a good mixture of power and speed. I had high hopes for Margot offensively and it hasn’t really panned out, but I LOVE watching him patrol centerfield. The guy is smooth and covers tons of ground which we all know is important in Petco. Naylors bat has impressed me in his rookie campaign. He has power, he goes with the outside pitch and has a good eye from the left side of dish. Even though he doesn’t look like it, the guy is a good athlete, he moves pretty well for a big guy and hes got a strong arm. I think with more time in the outfield and learning to hit his cut off man the defense will improve. Will he be great? No, but I think his defense will improve. I wish Martini had more pop or the speed to play center. However, the guy is a smart hitter and knows how to get on base. His awareness of the strike zone and his smooth contact stroke are fun to watch. We all know Franchy has the tools to be a stud, just not sure if his health will allow us to ever see it.
If you’re OK with the OF then you’re saying you’re pretty much Ok with the offense as is.
So any improvements for 2020 needs to come from pitching or growth in our young hitters.
Because the IF is pretty much set.

Quote from TatisJr on September 10, 2019, 4:26 pmFair point, I just think Naylor 22, Urias 22, Mejia 23 all got their first lengthy look at major league pitching this year. I think those 3 will have to improve and I think they will. I also expect Manny to put up a huge year in year 2 of his deal as he’s more comfortable. I’m sure it’s foolish, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see Wil have a bounce back year. All that combined with a healthy Tatis I think the offense will be fine. Kinsler and Hedges got a ton of at bats and we’re essentially automatic outs. My hunch is the Padres add Thor and Cole Hamels to the starting staff. A rotation of Thor/Paddack/Hamels/Lamet/Joey or Cal would be top notch. An improved bullpen with Munoz,Strahm,Yates anchoring down the backend. I think that staff would alleviate a lot of pressure on the offense. I wouldn’t be opposed to adding a big lefty bat or true lead off man in the outfield though. 😎

I think with this roster, Pads will do better in 2020; why??, No Kinsler and more Urias, more playing time for Mejia; those two, bring better avg and obp to the lineup; Myers, Renfroe and Margot are not that bad IMO and with Naylor and Martini helping the OBP on the OF, will have more runners for Machado, Hosmer, Tatis
The key IMO is the ptichinf staff; with Strahm all season on the BP, Muñoz, Baez, Perdomo settling down on their role; hopefully Richards can start since Openning Day, fallowed by Paddack, Lamet, Lucchesi and Lauer.
We can get better??, absolutely!!!!....unload the farm for Pham, Merrifield, Thor, Kluber.....or compromise the future payroll flexibility for a SP FA like Cole, Madbum, Stras.....
Options are there to get better...what is AJ going to do??

My first guess its the same, will not cost that much.....but hey, the market seems crazy from one offseason to another; he may cost 3/60, but also could cost 6/120....so, who could tell??; i´m all for a TOR or stopper SP.....

Quote from BoosterSD on September 10, 2019, 6:53 pmSilly question, maybe more of a poll. Would you as the GM of SD be willing to give up Gore for Yelich?

Quote from JasonE135 on September 10, 2019, 7:27 pmYelich would cost us every prospect in our system, plus on or two from our ml team. Nobody would buy 1 ticket for a Brewers game next year. Those guys don't get traded.

Should expand the option to say 3 years of Yelich's proven stardom vs. Gore's 6 years of elite potential.
Does Yelich get you the pennant in 2020-22? or does Gore get you the pennant 2021-2026?

It was really meant to be a yes or no question. Is Gore that untouchable that you would not include in a trade for Yelich? And yes, I know that Yelich is basically untouchable too.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 10, 2019, 7:41 pmTo Mr. Hernandez and Mr. Tatis, we do not want Thor! The man is not an ace. He has pitched like one in the past but he is not now. The reason you want an ace is to show the other guys on the staff how to train, pitch, win and just act on the field. Thor acts like a spoiled child. He would INFECT our staff, not improve them. I hope there are no huge trades or signings. People think MadBum was bad this year so he will sign for cheap? He is looking to break $100 million and I am sure that Boras has him convinced that he can. And the team looking for the trade is the one that loses it 90% of the time. If they know they have what we want, they can just say no until they get whatever THEY want. We couldn't get Thor at the trade deadline and I can guarantee you his price has not gone down.
