2020 Team Roster and Season
Quote from fenn68 on September 26, 2019, 9:22 amThe firing of Green now signals to me ownership wants to accelerate the winning strategy. More so if they hire one of the more high profile manager candidates. Although I do believe there should be a "natural" improvement with the current roster and the near term arrival of Gore / Patino ... in 2020 that alone is probably not enough for playoff contention. Think they will make the good effort to get a significant upgrade ... question where.
However, I do see a much better year from Machado ... a full season of Tatis ... a full season of Urias at 2B ... a full season of Mejia (paired with Hedges) boosting the offense over the course of a full season ... that alone should add some wins. Full unrestricted seasons from Paddack and Lamet should add some wins. Then the winners among Richards, Lauer, Lucchesi, Quantrill should be no worse (and potentially better) than the 2019 production from their slots ... should not lose more games (and maybe win more). Wild cards being the readiness (and effectiveness) of Gore and Patino. Think Yates, Strahm, and the young arms should present an effective bullpen.
So, do think the current core potential could produce the 78 wins predicted by Vegas for this year ... maybe even 81 depending on the rest of the league .. especially the fate of SF, Colo, and AZ.
However, this year the Wild Card team will be at 90 wins +/- .... not sure the current roster can pick-up those extra 10+ wins. Of course the other teams have a lot of moving parts so likely others will not perform the same in 2020.
The way I see it ... need a move (or two) to really make a playoff challenge. However, the LAD are not going away and should not plummet from their 102+ win level ... so the shot is really for the wild card one game play in and that should be the issue for a few more years until the LAD age out a bit and the Padres full array of prospects arrive and are productive. That should temper any current Padres moves that focus on "over paying" for a 1-2 year fix.
I will be another interesting winter.

It's another thing to find a way to make it happen. Who do we get? Do we sign free agents? Do we trade our top prospects for real quality outfielders? We should add $30-$50 million in payroll to add free agent impact talent, but I doubt ownership will do it. We could Trade Gore and Campusano for a huge left-handed OF bat, but everyone will go nuts when he turns into an ace. It will be like Roberto Alomar. Future for present. Don't just say "We need!" That's what children do. How do we fix it?
Lindor... Urias + Naylor + Joey Lucchessi + Baez as a base .. For Lindor
You forgot Hosmer, Renfroe and Margot.......7 for 1
maybe throw in 5 or 6 AA players also
You would make a great GM

The problem with that is that 7 times 0= the same thing as 4 times 0. The Indians don't need a full rebuild of average players. They need 1 or 2 more big time players.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on September 26, 2019, 6:15 pmBenintendi + Betts
For
Myers + Luchessi + Naylor + Arias + Margot + Morejon + Baez + Hedges
Red Sox re tool Myers in that ballpark could be a GOD.. Luchessi improves their rotation greatly ar no cost.. Betts is walking in 2021 so why not get a haul for him.. Benintendi is basically < Naylor at the plate but better fit for NL.. Sure its a big package but by trading Myers we also put ourselves in a position to resign Betts in 2021 (10/330-350) only costing ourselves net +$13-$15 mil for a 6 WAR + player...
We could still trade for a BOYD type with our abundance of specs and Sign Wheeler in FA payroll wouod still only be +25-$30 vs 2019 or right about 125 mil
Wheeler/Boyd/Paddack/Gore with Lamet/Lauer/Richards/Q (I would imagine 1 (not Richards) of these guys would likely end up in Detroit... Providing 5th SP long relief role especially with Gore and likely Richards being monitored a bit
1. Tatis Jr SS
2. Betts CF
3. Machado 3B
4. Renfroe RF
5. Hosmer 1B
6. Mejia C
7. Benintendi LF
8. Urias 2B
Would be an incredibly improved defensively (except C) and offensively unit in 2020 and Beyond.. Renfroe would have Trammell/Franchy/Jank all pushing from the other side of the pkate for AB's throughout the yr...
With new GM .. Betts days numbered etc in Boston such a blockbuster is quite possible with AJP hater DD gone...

Quote from JasonE135 on September 26, 2019, 6:41 pmBoston does not want a full rebuild of average players either. First off Betts is going to free agency. He wants to max out his payday. He will probably get $400 million. There is NO way the Padres will win that competition. We will not go into $1 billion in contracts overall. Nor should we. Boston does not want to take on money-they want to lose it. Giving away Benintendi (who is very cheap and productive) for Myers (who was neither this year) is antithetical to that.

Quote from BoosterSD on September 26, 2019, 7:15 pmQuote from TatisJr on September 25, 2019, 4:24 pmMyers, Margot, Renfroe was actually productive vs lefties as a group. Naylors bat and glove will certainly improve in year 2. Cordero is a giant boom or bust. His injuries and K rate have me fed up, but I understand if the organization doesn’t give up yet. His skill set is extremely rare. You add a lefty bat that hits righties well and I think it’s a good enough group to win in 2020.
There is no chance that Naylors glove improves in the OF. He is NOT and OF. And if SD insists that he can play OF, then he will need to hit .310/.375 OBP and smash 45 HRs to get to the even mark of his horrible glove.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 26, 2019, 7:28 pmHe could very well turn into something akin to Kyle Shwarber. He has some serious value. A .270/.350 30HR line would easily make him our best OF bat. That is definitely possible for him. That is what LF is for.

Quote from BoosterSD on September 26, 2019, 7:32 pmQuote from JasonE135 on September 25, 2019, 5:12 pmI agree with you Mr. Tatis. I can see a single medium value left-handed add to the OF but I do not see more than that. Like you said the offense will get better with a year of experience, just like the pitching. Mr. Silvestre: Would you make that trade if you were the Indians GM? The Indians have fans too. I doubt they would like that trade. That would be like us trading Gwynn.
J135, the only problem with your anology is that Lindor has already told the Indians that he is not signing an extension and wants BIG dollars in FA. In SD we always knew that #19 was a Padre for life. So, while I do believe that CLE will trade Lindor sometime between this winter off season and next season trade deadline, I dont think they are trading for the above listed package.
It would have to start with Patino, Arias (SS), Luchessi (?), and 2 more better than average MiL.

I wouldnt want Schwarber in the Petco OF even as a LF for 81 games. And even most talking heads I listen to on XM think that IF the Cubs part ways with Maddon, that CHI then will ship Schwarber off to the AL where they think he needs to be anyway. So, IMO there really is nothing that Naylor can do with a bat to justify him being an OF in Petco. Maybe if he drops 35 lbs and doesnt run in the same spot for too long anymore, I would look at him again in the OF, but thats not going to happen.

Quote from TatisJr on September 26, 2019, 7:56 pmBooster, how can you say a 22 year old who has only been playing in the OF for 2 years can’t improve? Naylor’s defense has been atrocious for sure, but I wouldn’t say he can’t improve. Some of his mistakes like hitting the cut off man are easily correctable. I’ve also seen him take bad routes to balls and that is correctable with coaching and more reps in the OF. I don’t think the Padres insist on him being and OF’er, but with Hosmer locked in a first there is nowhere else to put him. This team is in desperate need of LHH and Naylor can help. For a 22 year old in the bigs I’ve been impressed with the maturity of his hitting approach and the guy is strong as an ox. Give him an off-season to work on his body, get some reps and coaching in the OF. I think we will see improvement. Like Jason said, if he can fill a Kyle Scwarber role for this team, I think we would all take that.
