2020 Team Roster and Season

PreviousPage 18 of 22Next

It's easy to say the offense needs improvement. It's another thing to find a way to make it happen. Who do we get? Do we sign free agents? Do we trade our top prospects for real quality outfielders? We should add $30-$50 million in payroll to add free agent impact talent, but I doubt ownership will do it. We could Trade Gore and Campusano for a huge left-handed OF bat, but everyone will go nuts when he turns into an ace. It will be like Roberto Alomar. Future for present. Don't just say "We need!" That's what children do. How do we fix it?

Lindor... Urias + Naylor + Joey Lucchessi + Baez as a base .. For Lindor

Mr. P, I’ve been paying attention to a team that saw Kinsler and Hedges get over 600 ABs. Those two were pretty much automatic outs. The production from second base between Kinsler, France, Urias and Garcia was god awful. Factor in 179 Hedges and Mejia’s bat wasn’t really given a chance until the second half. Margot and Renfroe can’t hit righties, but they are very productive against lefties. Myers slump this year was one of the worst I’ve seen. Machado didn’t produce to his normal standards. Tatis was injured. Do you think Meijia, Naylor, Urias won’t improve at the plate after their first real taste in the bigs? If your answer is yes, then we do have huge problems. The offense was legitimately awful and needs improved especially against RHP, but I don’t think the OF situation will see this complete overhaul most of you think will happen.

I agree with you Mr. Tatis. I can see a single medium value left-handed add to the OF but I do not see more than that. Like you said the offense will get better with a year of experience, just like the pitching. Mr. Silvestre: Would you make that trade if you were the Indians GM? The Indians have fans too. I doubt they would like that trade. That would be like us trading Gwynn.

Word out of Cleveland is Lindor and Keuchel are being traded this off-season.. Only reason I am bringing it up

Probably more like Cleveland will listen on offers ... not the same as “are being traded”.

I can see Kluber being moved ... Cleveland has a returning core SP staff that is fine and Kluber carries a large salary (two option years). Add that he is coming off a poor start and injury while getting older. He may be had for less than elite prospects to a team that takes the contract.

Lindor ... not so much. 2 years of one of the best all around SS in MLB and always in the MVP discussions is not being given up for less than top shelf talent (and not likely just prospects). After clearing Kipnis and Kluber their payroll with Lindor is not an issue and trading Lindor would just kill their fan support (resulting in lower revenue). They would be better off making runs for the playoffs with Lindor over the next two seasons (they are close) ... keeping revenues up ... then going for the full rebuild when Lindor leaves (and he will) in 2022.

Wow....OK.

This forum...and this very thread in particular is here for us to discuss "what to do".

It's what we are literally doing "right now".

I never suggested we would have three new outfielders......but as much offense as this team needs....and the fact our infield is pretty much set in stone...I would also suspect we won't go into 2020 with the same 6 outfielders either.

Also, with where we are in this rebuild....the Green firing....AJ's seat at minimum getting "slightly" warm....I don;t think the only change would be "one" LH hitting platoon outfielder.

I guess we'll see.

Following the MLBTradeRumors’ series on “suggested” winter moves team by team. Today’s tweaked (again) my interest in Whit Merrifield who they believe KC should consider moving as one of their best trade assets and they really need to add young talent after 2 consecutive 100 loss seasons.

Merrifield will be 31 (closer to the down side than the up side) but on a great contract ... 3 more years at $5 - 6.750 - 2.750MM. He delivered a 3.6 WAR last season so a lot of room to fade and still justify the contract. Plays both 2B and CF/RF but the key is that he hits for average / OBP ... that really fits the Padres needs. RHH.

He should not come cheaply .... but the Padres probably have more ammunition than most other teams would pony up for a 2B or a on-base type OF. Boils down to KC being willing to deal him ... not a payroll drag .... so it will boil down to the quality of talent.

Legit target in my opinion.

There's basically three things we can do....and none of them are "stand pat"

We can improve the starting rotation.

We can improve the offense.

We can improve both.

By improve of course I mean...."attempt" to improve.

I don't think any real moves will be made in the BP except keeping our own as we will have arms advancing from the minors and

others who just miss the starting rotation.

So which do we do and how aggressively?

With the kids we have there are arguments for doing either........or neither.

But I can't imagine we won't go pretty big "somewhere".
