“Easily”! Nothing is easy dealing with contracts unless it comes with a pile of dead presidents. At his age, his next contact may be his last chance at top dollar deal ... especially if he is coming off a quality 2020.
If offers are reasonable equal, his time with SD may be the deciding factor to stay. His loyalty will be with his family and their future. Think players understand the teams don’t have loyalty to players unless they are performing. Ask some of the veteran Padres who will get DFA’d this winter.
By easily I didn't mean he would play for us for half of what he could get elsewhere.
But I would think we would have first right of refusal to match any offers or get even close.
He is a SoCal guy anyway.
Do you think anyone else was giving him a 2 year deal last offseason?

I'll throw a lefty COF who may be available Michael Brantley (Hou).. $16 mil 1 yr left on his deal ..early 30's sort of a Vet presence for the young Pads also.. Plus he is an elite hitter and OBP machine..why would he be available ? Kyle Tucker is ready for MLB duty .. And with 5 OFers under contract in Houston someone has to go.. IF Astros go after Cole hard they will need the $16 mil owe Bradley off their books.. So there are a few reasons the Astros may want to move him.. His 1 yr remaining is almost ideal for Padres.. They can extend him for a few yrs or let young Trammell take over and let him go after 2020.. The other reason he may be available as well if Astros win WS and let Gore go.. They might want to have some flexibility to retool and cut payroll a bit ..with an eye of being competitive in 20 and getting afternit again in 21 or 22... Anyway I think he or Tucker (less likely) get moved.. What would one yr of Brantley cost? Weathers + Arias I would think gets it done... If Astros are looking for a morr MLB ready deal Q + Naylor + Baez should be enough

lets not forget Japan either I researched 3 names and now forgot them.. But 2 are lefty CFers with ++ defense and speed.. One is FA one would need posting ..one is 32 the other 31 in 2020... And there is a 2B righty whom they call the Japanese Trout "only better" 😆.. Only 28 would need to fet posted but his 5 yrs up to now .304/.402/.560++ avg 97 RBIS 25 SB only 2 CS and 99 walks per season 34 Hrs and 107 runs score... Speculation is posting fee qould be Max allowed $20 mil for him ..if his club indeed posts him

Sounds as if Houston will try to move Reddick (not Brantley) to make room for Tucker. Reddick carries a $13MM price tag / 1 year to FA so about in the same category as Brantley but Brantley is much more valuable to the Houston offense.
Not sure where Houston sits financially but next season they already have to take on a BIG jump in Altuve’s salary and start picking up some big money for arb decision on Correa. They do have some other FA that open some dollars. Not sure they can commit long term BIG money to Cole and then deal in a few years with Correa’s arb / FA, Springer’s arb / FA, and Bregman’s arb / FA.
Now if you like 1 year of Reddick might get him (and maybe a prospect) for a Lauer or Quantrill type ... sort of depends on the prospect Houston would add.

Dont forget they are into Verlander for $33M per season for both 2020 and 2021. So IMO there is no chance they can resign Cole. He walks away with a WS ring and a big check from a new team.

If Reddick can play CF I think he would be close to ideal for us. Left-handed, reasonably affordable, wouldn't cost us a wealth of prospects and older so he is just there until Trammell is ready. Pretty good numbers too.

How about Brett Gardner? He is 36 so he shouldn't expect a long contract or big money. He still has good speed and defense and he hits left-handed. Against righties this year he hit .270/.354 with 22hr in 337AB. That could be exactly what we need until Trammell gets here.

Gardner smells like PED man.. How is he having his best season ever .838 OPS at age 35 and with double his power output???? 50 game suspension?.. I'll take Reddick..but he doesn't move the needle much vs Margot..(overall) with his .744 OPS (career) almost Margot like .. So not sure AJP wants to make a small impact move like that .. I think he wants a STUD and yes he is going to cost us prospects.. I mean Reddick 0.8 WAR production level OFers are a dime a dozen... Brantley on the other hand.. Huge Bat..Reddick 4.1 WAR smells like Headley's breakout.. Just to sign for a good chunk and go back to his norm 1.0 WAR at 36.. I was all in on Gardner like 2 weeks ago..but kept asking and doubting his numbers being the norm or the absolute peak.. So ive cooled down on him..

I'd rather take a chance on lefty speedy CFer FA Shogo Akiyama..... Or Yuki Yamagita (he would need to be posted) .. High OBP Speed and Defense make Shogo ideal for SD.. Yamagita was called a legit AS caliber MLB CFer by various MLB vs Japan MLBers who played against him
Another Japanese player who maybe posted "the Mike Trout" of Japan.. Is Tatsuto Yamada 2B... Righty stick.. But he would command the full $20 mil posting fee for sure.. And would be an expensive sign...

It will be interesting to see what other options Gardner will have as a FA. After having his entire career in NY, American League, and being an East Coast guy plus conditined to be playing on a contender ... he may not have a West Coast non-contender in the NL very high on his list. Fair chance he signs back with the NYY.
