I would certainly hope Tingler makes a statement today, of some sort, to get ahead of this thing. Last thing our players need is to think their manager is trying to appease( or agree!) with the enemy.

The Ranger manager needs to put his big boy pants on and tell his team to compete all 27 outs.

Both Tingler and Woodward made the presser this morning and Tingler was clear in his backing of Tatis plus both managers seem intent to downplay yesterday and just get on with playing baseball. Woodward was not coming off as upset or trying to stir the pot.

Maybe the media and fans have made more of this than Tingler and Woodward. No surprise.

Glad he did.

Not sure if Preller had a word with him( or perhaps one of his veterans?) or he came to the conclusion on his own but Tingler definitely needed to set the record straight.

And hopefully Woodward( and all the other troglodytes!) learned something from this episode. So many of these unwritten rules are so DUMB.

Good article from Bryce Miller.

Still shocks me that our manager would make such an ill advised comment.

Fowler has waited long enough, and spent enough money, to see some results. Preller, and ALL his guys, are on notice.

IF the season ended now the playoffs in the NL:

1.   LAD

2.  CUBS

3.  ATL

4.  COLO

5.  MILW (tie)

6.  Miami (tie)

7.  PADRES

8.  AZ

A key observation is that PHIL, NYM, STL, CINN, WASH are all still easily in striking distance based on games behind (loss column) and games to be played. Only SF and PITT (both with 16 losses) should be considered out.

In the AL, similar with SEA and BOST clearly out (18 losses each) and probably LAA with 17 losses. Even with poor records ... for now .. TOR, TEX, DET, KC are at least "close" ... within 3 games in the loss column.

That potentially creates a lot of buyers and hold teams ... and really minimizes sellers. If there going to be much trade deadline activity there has got to be some more separation in the next week or so.

Never get "comfortable" with the future but the Padres are looking in very good position to make the playoffs when we step back and view them in the context of the rest of the NL.

  1. Some consensus that the Padres have one of the "easier" remaining schedules combining lesser opponents (AL WEST) and strategic days off for rest and managing the starting rotation.
  2. COLO seems to be on the quick fade ... and now the hold the 2nd place slot from the NL West but are on track to open that slot and slide beneath both SD and AZ
  3. SD statistically is playing well into the playoff level:
    1. Offense (OPS) 7th in NL
    2. Starting Pitching: (ERA) 2nd in NL / (WHIP) 2nd in NL
    3. Relief Pitching: (ERA) 9th in NL / (WHIP) 9th in NL ... surprisingly well positioned given how poorly they have been pitching and past track record of a Pagan, Stammen gives hope for improvement.

Tingler suggested that with the days off in Sept they might consider going with 4 SP down the stretch ... that is maximizing their strength. Then have to be optimistic that in round 1 of the playoffs (3 games) the strong SP gives the Padres an advantage. Have noted that Lamet, Paddack, Richards, and Davies are being allowed to go the 90+ route ... sort of a build as the season evolves ... taking some pressure off the pen ... that combo could be a plus down the stretch.

As that evolves ... hopefully the pen (collectively) is improving with Quantrill, Morejon, Baez, Patino potentially bolstering Pomeranz and Strahm ... then just hope Stammen, Pagan get back to their historic form.

So, for now, Padres seems to be playing at a level to be in the playoffs ...

Fangraph's odds for SD in the playoffs (current):

6.9% to win the NL WEST

48.4% to take 2nd place

23.3% to take a Wild Card

78.6% to make the playoffs ... that should be an incentive for the Padres to work on getting the team best ready for success in the playoffs (hopefully without blowing getting in).

Rotation will shorten, serves us well.  Need proven BULLPEN help to both make & succeed in playoffs!

I know we normally want our team to win every game ... make the playoffs ... win the World Series. However, there probably is a point strategically in September that they may not make moves to win a specific game with the eye on setting up better when they get into the playoffs.

  1. First they need to be confident that they have a clear path to get in the playoffs
  2. Second, given the "no fans", little home field advantage (unless it avoids cross country travel)
  3. Add: if MLB goes bubble ... no home field advantage at all.

So, if the Padres think they are in ... no real advantage of winning "extra" games for seeding purposes.

  1. Do they start playing the reserves more to give them actual game time while resting the starters?
  2. SP can be given that extra rest day or pulled early ... trying to balance keeping them sharp and keeping the fresh
  3. RP some of the same as SP but with an eye out for deciding who to rely on in the playoffs given the current concerns.

Since the end of September already has off days maybe need to focus that time on ramping up the regulars to peak for the playoffs ... so, do they use early Sept (and when / how much) to set-up the roster?

Note that after the Sept 16th game the Padres have 4 off days and only 8 games (against some bottom dwellers: SEA; LAA; SF) before the first playoff game, but from Sept 2nd thru Sept 16 they play every day ... including series vs OAK,LAD and COLO.

Bet some "odd moves" in September to be ready for having the best roster set for the playoffs.

So I was thinking the other day about which Padre would be next to have his jersey number retired and hoisted at Petco next to Steve Garveys.

In came to me that it could very well be my cousin Phil.

Phil Nevin.

I believe he will be the next to have his jersey retired by the Padres in approx 15-20 years....what do you guys think?
