In came to me that it could very well be my cousin Phil.
Phil Nevin.
I believe he will be the next to have his jersey retired by the Padres in approx 15-20 years....what do you guys think?
Good bet it is ... only issue is the spelling of Nevin ... T-A-T-I-S.
It was Phil’s number before FTJ’s
🙂

Quote from fenn68 on August 21, 2020, 6:35 amPadres now in 2nd place ... barely.
Colorado is on a major losing spell ... more consistent with their pre-season projection ... and the Padres have a number of games at the end of the month, early next month with COLO and could (should) bury them for 2020.
AZ (who we are done with for the season) become the competition for 2nd place but hopefully the “easier” schedule down the stretch favors the Padres.
2nd place in the NL West guarantees a playoff slot and based on how the other 2nd place teams are playing so far ... should get them the #4 seed. If there is no bubble playoffs, means the Padres don’t have to travel for that first 3 game series ... potentially to the East Coast or MidWest for the first time in 2020 ... travel could be a negative.

Quote from Ben Davey on August 22, 2020, 12:52 amPadres went from being in 4th place to having a 2 game lead and the third best record in the league, real quick.
IDK how many of you listen to MTPGA, I think Craig made a really good point. Who would you trade for? No reason to go after a starter. In a short series youre only going to have 2 or 3 starters and we already have that with Lamet/Paddack/Davies/Richards. Offense would be good, but is any bat you trade for going to be more of an upgrade than signing FA Puig? Unless its JD Martinez (who is signed for awhile), doesnt make sense to give up a legit prospect.
The reviler option is still there, but even if they trade for a reliever tomorrow. You assume he throws what, 10-12 innings? Would you give up a Campusano or Abrams for 12 innings?
Part of it also depends on if the window is only open this year. But with Gore, Patino, Lamet, Paddack its hard to justify giving up the farm to marginally help this year.

Quote from BoosterSD on August 22, 2020, 7:21 pmAnyone else a little excited about the season that Myers is having. Defense looks good in RF, hitting over .270, obp over .350, and 7 HRs. This is what we paid for IMO. Hope he keeps it up.

Quote from Ben Davey on August 23, 2020, 12:08 amQuote from MrPadre19 on August 22, 2020, 8:01 pmAnyone know the last time we were 5 games over .500?
We started last year 11-5
Before then the last time we were more than 6 games over 500 was THE END OF THE SEASON in 2010 when we finished at 90-72 and Latos took the loss in the final game. Lineup was Dino, Eckstein, Tejada, AGon, Ludwick, Torrealba, Scott Hairston, Headley, Latos. Yep, that was the year we traded Kluber to get Ludwick #MissingPiece

Quote from Randy Manese on August 23, 2020, 7:28 amVery painful memories of that 2010 season. Had led the NL for most of the year, but went to SF needing a sweep to put us in a tie. We won the first 2, but lost to SF who went on to be the World Series champs. Kluber was having his best year in the minors and we also traded another pitcher in the deal at the trading deadline; Kluber was also already in his mid-20's, if I remember correctly. Cleveland saw the potential, but we thought we could make it to the playoffs/series but our starting pitching failed during the stretch - bullpen, however, was great!

Quote from Ben Davey on August 23, 2020, 8:28 amYou are correct, after a very meh 2008 and 2009 season, Kluber was 6-6, 3.45 ERA, 136 K in 122.2 innings. But at the same time he was 24 , and wasnt even the best Corey in the minors (Luebke was rated quite a bit higher). Heck in 2011 and 2012 Kluber came up to Cleveland and was not very good. It wasnt until 2013 and 2014 that he found his groove.
The biggest thing was at the time we thought we had given up prospect 15-20 for a rental player, and it didnt sting that bad. Kluber didnt become Kluber for years later. To put it in 2020 terms, imagine giving up Lawson and having him become a Cy Young pitcher. We all like Lawson, hes not a throw away, but none of us would think he would be a top 5 pitcher in the game over the next decade.

Quote from fenn68 on August 23, 2020, 9:18 amRemember thinking that was a good move then to secure the playoffs.
Somewhat highlights the care needed in evaluation of pitchers in the minors and not not bail too soon if they have the raw skills. Hard to gauge when the command or a 3rd pitch develops taking them to the next level. Hitters not so much.
I recall fans wanting to dump Lamet a few years back when he was not putting up numbers in the minors ... scouted as a two pitch pitcher ... no command ... "older". Good the Padres did not listen to those fans. Miami fans are probably questioning the trade of Paddack for the rental of Rodney.
Has to be difficult for any GM to deal a good prospect for a rental with no guarantee the rental will take them to the playoffs or the World Series.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 23, 2020, 9:32 amHaven't done the research so just to stir up a little controversy, does it seem like our pitchers give up more HRs when Hedges catches than when Mejia catches? Certainly Hedges not throwing the ball, but maybe not making in-game or pitch to pitch adjustments given what a particular pitcher may have on that day? Also, Rothschild/Tingler may be calling a lot of the pitches for Mejia while Hedges is more on his own? Just thought I'd throw that out there if anyone is bored with a 6 game winning streak.
