2020 Playoffs
Quote from fenn68 on September 30, 2020, 8:42 pmOddly if before the game you told me we would score 4 runs off Kim ... I would have thought we would win against a poor hitting team like STL.
Clearly the bullpen really had little trouble with the STL line-up.
That totally ineffective performance by Paddack giving up 6 runs early not only created a big hole to dig out of ... but maybe as detrimental was it forced the Padres’ hand to use a major piece of the bullpen .... not only making the use of them tomorrow and Friday (a planned bullpen day) more difficult to manage but also gives STL a live view of these arms for the first time this season.
I suspect they planned to use Davies for game 2 on regular rest ... no advantage of having him in game 1 on short rest then still comeback with Paddack. Not sure the options if they chose not to go with Paddack ... could have changed the mind on Richards in the pen I guess but then ... Morejon, Patino, ??? Neither would have gone deep into the game and still the pen would get worked / exposed.
As much as I like Davies, STL seems like the type of team that could give him fits. Not power hitters so more controlled ABs ... take pitches ... punch the ball to the opposite field. Wainwright is tough ... so the batters better come through in the clutch.
As for Paddack, his two pitch approach and lack of command is allowing teams to sit on his FB (pretty strait) ... unless he has some further development, his may not be in the Padres future. He clearly is stubborn about pitching his way ... so worried.

Quote from Brian Connelly on September 30, 2020, 10:16 pmUggh. Tough. Like that we fought back into the game. Many throwing Paddack under the bus are the same that were annointing him & his 2 pitch mix an "ace" after his great rookie year. He's got a great changeup. But he needs to develop other pitch/es for it to have a chance at working. No idea why the fastball command just isn't there. Guys last year also knew he only had 2 pitches.
My biggest gripe honestly isn't CP; it's the freaking baserunning. It has been god-awful all year, and this is where it will kill you. A coach/es HAVE to be held accountable for some of that, and it needs to be a big emphasis early in ST.
I'm not giving up, and I know this team isn't either. I like our chances with Davies.

Quote from MrPadre19 on October 1, 2020, 7:50 amYep...we knew what we had in Paddack this year.
Hit and miss...with more miss.
We needed to not run into outs(Jake) and come through with runners on(FTJ).
But we did...and didn't.
We really need to win this game 2....I realize that's obvious but I don't want to end this extremely positive season with a 2 game sweep.
Even if we did lose our top 2 starters for a 3 game series.
That is just killer.....

Quote from Brian Connelly on October 1, 2020, 8:25 amLineup today? Tingler was right Game 1, I was wrong; Hosmer, Cronenworth, & Nola all produced vs LH Kim.
Given that, despite the bad baserunning, Cronenworth's playing. Can't see sitting Profar either. So the 2 main questions are:
- Pham or Moreland (L) vs. Wainwright?
- Nola or Castro (L) vs. Wainwright?
Tempting on face to go with the L vs R matchup, but both Moreland & Castro are career AL players who rarely (never?) have faced Wainwright. Nola hasn't either, but he has reverse splits this year. Pham saw Waino from the field. Battle of 2 guys that know each other...
- Grisham (L), 2. Tatis, 3. Machado, 4. Hosmer (L), 5. Myers, 6. Pham, 7. Cronenworth (L), 8. Nola, 9. Profar (S)

Quote from Brian Connelly on October 1, 2020, 8:28 amI thought the National Broadcast team was St. Louis' crew for about the first 2-3 innings before they started giving Padres equal play. They did have one great point: That the long in season layoff followed by the huge # of games in condensed timeframe for Cardinals definitely impacted their position players' production.
In other words, Cardinals offense is a lot better than it looks on paper!

Quote from Brian Connelly on October 1, 2020, 8:36 amA lot of credit going to Cardinals' weak on paper (see above) offense having a "great gameplan" for Paddack by... swinging aggressively at his inevitable 1st pitch FB in the zone?!?
I realize his pitch mix is what it is at this point but... ? Isn't there SOME call for adjustment there by Nola or Paddack? Maybe DON'T throw a 1st pitch FB in the zone if 2-3 guys do the same thing?
It's way more "on" Paddack, but it does make me curious how Yadier Molina, or Austin Hedges for that matter would adjust their calls based on what they're seeing early there....?

Although the 1st pitch FBs should be questioned .... I see the bigger issue being Paddack's command of that FB. Goldschmidt's HR came from right down the middle with no movement. Put those FB on the corners and would have been (probably) a different game.
Has to be a lot of pre-game strategy with Paddack, Nola, Rothchild on how to approach each hitter ... so I do expect Nola is calling the gameplan (and did not notice Paddack shaking off ... but could be wrong). Still no matter how well structured the gameplan ... the pitchers have to hit their spots. For Paddack, it went south all too quickly.
I can't imagine the gameplan was to challenge Goldschmidt (the only real threat in the line-up) ... yet a center cut FB ... location location location!

Quote from fenn68 on October 1, 2020, 9:07 amProbably can interpret this a ton of ways ... given the uniqueness of the criteria for teams making the playoffs and seedings .... but 7 "Central" teams made the playoffs ... 3 being 7/8 seeds (CINN, MILW, CWS). 5 "East" teams (TOR wild card). Then the minimum in the "West" at 4.
So far, NYY eliminates CLEV (Central), Houston eliminates MINN (Central), and OAK is tied 1-1 with CWS (Central). In the NL LAD up 1-0 over MILW (Central), MIA up 1-0 over CUBS (Central), ATL up 1-0 over CINN (Central) with only STL (Central) up 1-0 over SD.
Central is on the verge of crash and burn in the playoffs.

Quote from Randy Manese on October 1, 2020, 10:08 amI've been a Chris Paddack supporter since he was picked up from the Marlins system in 2017, however, his performance and post-game comments really cause me concern. He basically said that he left it all on the field and it just didn't go his way! I'm sorry, but I only saw one inning where he looked like a major league pitcher and less than two innings where he was just laying that fastball in belt high down the middle or slightly outside/inside and he was getting torched - it was like batting practice. It seems Paddack is currently delusional about how effective he is and just believes it is all bad luck and not his fault. That is not a good recipe for success going forward. If he doesn't change his attitude and do those things he used to do - work down and up to all 4 quadrants with the fastball and keep the changeup low - he may not be in the rotation much longer at the major league level, especially without a dependable 3rd pitch. I'm so disappointed in what I saw but more so on what he said afterward - he seems like he doesn't want to be held accountable for his recent pitching failures.

We are in agreement on this. Saw his post-game and did not seem to accept HE pitched poorly. Combine that with before the game there was a quote that he consulted with his brother and said he would go back to the approach when he was successful ... HS ... MLB is NOT HS.
Not that big of a jump from self-confidence to stubborn and refusing to make changes. Even in the minors the scouting suggested that he needed that third pitch to be successful as a SP ... pretty sure the organization has tried to develop that third pitch and now after two ML season that is even more evident ... not seeing it. However, with two or three pitches ... without command he will not be successful and don't know how they address the command issue.
