2020 Playoffs
Quote from fenn68 on October 1, 2020, 12:16 pmQuote from fenn68 on October 1, 2020, 9:07 amProbably can interpret this a ton of ways ... given the uniqueness of the criteria for teams making the playoffs and seedings .... but 7 "Central" teams made the playoffs ... 3 being 7/8 seeds (CINN, MILW, CWS). 5 "East" teams (TOR wild card). Then the minimum in the "West" at 4.
So far, NYY eliminates CLEV (Central), Houston eliminates MINN (Central), and OAK is tied 1-1 with CWS (Central). In the NL LAD up 1-0 over MILW (Central), MIA up 1-0 over CUBS (Central), ATL up 1-0 over CINN (Central) with only STL (Central) up 1-0 over SD.
Central is on the verge of crash and burn in the playoffs.
Well CINN (Central) bites the dust 2 game to 0 to ATL. Scoring a disturbing ZERO runs in 22 innings.
=====
CINN was originally favored for the NL Central and finished 3rd. Designed to hit HR in that small ballpark in CINN ... that did not work against good pitching in ATL.
Wonder if their GM (if he survives) needs to rethink their overall approach ... very good pitching base but offense????

Quote from WindsorUK on October 1, 2020, 12:21 pmThat stadium in Cincinnati is a band box!
What's their home and away splits since it was built? Must be pretty drastic?

Quote from WindsorUK on October 1, 2020, 12:24 pmDoes Garret Richards get the nod tomorrow( no way we lose today with Davies going for us)?
Actually, quite puzzled why the veteran didn't go yesterday.

I realize his pitch mix is what it is at this point but... ? Isn't there SOME call for adjustment there by Nola or Paddack? Maybe DON'T throw a 1st pitch FB in the zone if 2-3 guys do the same thing?
It's way more "on" Paddack, but it does make me curious how Yadier Molina, or Austin Hedges for that matter would adjust their calls based on what they're seeing early there....?
Paddack wasn't hitting his spot either. It's his command that is killing him for the most part. Without a 3rd "keep them honest" pitch he's at best a #4 in a rotation.

Tomorrow is a bullpen day ... will see Richards but not sure if he starts.
Guessing they opted for Paddack yesterday since has been working as a starter and had a chance of giving 5-6 innings. Richards last started back on Sept 13th then was moved to the pen and has been going 1-2 inning stints.
Made sense Richards (over Paddack) to the pen early in Sept ... he looks to be better suited for a relief role ... considering at that time the expectation was Lamet - Clevinger - Davies getting the starts. Good plan ... bad outcome.
At one point Tingler “implied” we may see Paddack again tomorrow (expect out of the pen not starting) depending on how the relief pitchers are used today and tomorrow. A chance for redemption?

I would with 200% certainty start Garrett Richards in Game 3. It's the playoffs. No tomorrow. Think that's why we saw him Game 1. Tune up/'bullpen'. Go as long as he can assuming effective; likely 3-4 innings max around 50-65 pitches.
NO WAY should they start either Morejon or especially Patino. Just too big a chance of crash & burn & being out of the game too early. If Richards just keeps us in it till the middle innings, we've got a great chance--even if behind; #1 comeback team in MLB & I think both our pen & offense are better than theirs.

That does NOT bode well. Simply may have "no" choice. Positively need Davies to go minimum 5 IP today. I look for Cardinals hitters to pull a 180 & be ultra patient to try to get him out ASAP. Davies should go right at them; they're not going to be sitting on his FB...

Quote from Brian Connelly on October 1, 2020, 1:17 pmWow.
- Grisham (L), 2. Tatis, 3. Machado, 4. Hosmer (L), 5. Pham -LF, 6. Moreland (L) - DH, 7. Myers, 8. Nola, 9. Cronenworth (L)
No Profar! I do "get" it though. Moreland's pop makes more sense early vs RH SP; Profar more versatile late. Look for him to go in @ #6 spot probably 3rd time through lineup.

Quote from Randy Manese on October 1, 2020, 1:24 pmGlad they moved the game to 4 vice 2 - heat is dangerous for everyone. Wainwright is tough but we have to keep swinging and get the clutch hits. Let's get to game 3 - Go Padres!
