2020 Playoffs
Quote from fenn68 on September 7, 2020, 10:47 amWith FanGraphs having the Padres with a 99.1% chance of making the playoffs should start discussing the Padres' strategy to get into the playoffs and how to structure the 28 man roster for the opening 3 game series.
(of course there is a 0.9% of not making it ... so don't take the playoffs as a given)

Although no final call by MLB ... most seem to think a NL "bubble" in Texas is likely. Probably the higher seed gets last AB for all three of the first series (advantage for a better season?).
The "bubble" may give a slight advantage to teams that have been effective road teams vs. teams that crush it at home and struggle on the road.

Quote from fenn68 on September 7, 2020, 10:54 amI suppose it depends a bit on the round 1 (3 game) opponent but I would expect them go with extra position players (specialists) and drop from the 15-16 pitchers they have been carrying. I think they can reset the 28 before round 2 ... just not during the series unless for an injury (and approved by the Commissioner).
Given the Padres softness vs. LHP ... may expect to see Pham and Campusano included if the opponent is LHP heavy.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 7, 2020, 2:55 pmDoes Richards move to long man out of the Pen?
Does Paddack maybe become a two inning reliever?
I think if a Paddack knew he had to only go two he could really let loose and maybe dominate?

Quote from fenn68 on September 7, 2020, 3:12 pmIf they choose to use Clevinger - Davies - Lamet on "regular rest" ... they will need the 4th SP assuming only one off day between the 1st and 2nd playoff series (unless they win the 1st set in 2 games). In the second series ... don't know if there will be any off days during the 5 game set ... no travel so?.
Have to see how the game by game schedule comes out but a 4th SP is likely and whomever that would be probably wound not be burned in the pen ... unless a critical game / emergency.
As of now, Richards as the 4th starter given his recent consistency and experience seems the logical piece.
Paddack in the pen sounds good but don't know about his warm-up routine and whether he can get ready quickly for a relief appearance.
3 or 4 more starts so could still go a lot of ways but guessing one or the other will be the long option with Patino / Morejon NOT active and Strahm saved for late innings. Anyone's guess on Perdomo.

Quote from 3fingersplit on September 7, 2020, 8:44 pmBad Idea talking about playoffs until they actually clinch a spot....Baseball is a funny game and the Padres could drop 9 of 12 in the blink of an eye and then it doesn't look so much like a sure thing......I'll pass on the playoff talk for awhile....I've seen way to many fold jobs over the years and given the Padres haven't made the playoffs in like forever I for one choose not the jinx my guys.

Quote from fenn68 on September 9, 2020, 4:12 pmAJ CassavellTingler confirmed no added rest for the Padres rotation during their current stretch of 15 games in 15 days. That means Lamet and Clevinger won't pitch during the Padres' series against the Dodgers next week.==========================Given the trajectory towards the playoffs ... good not to give the LAD a "free look" at Lamet and Clevinger during the season and drop them on them in the playoffs ... harder for them to get set.

But really no way to manipulate rotation that makes any sense since no off days. More important to split or better SF series than win the LAD series, much as I want to catch them!
With the # 8 seed now @ +1 > .500, I've got our playoff clinch at 5 wins.

I think some were thinking add a "bullpen day" to lag one of them to the LAD series while giving everyone an extra day rest. Did not think that was a good idea ... and neither did the Padres apparently.

Quote from fenn68 on September 10, 2020, 8:31 amKen Rosenthal reported that MLB is considering the first round playoff games may be played in the city with the higher seed then go to a bubble for the second round.
Maybe a logistics issue with hotels and ballparks for eight teams in one location.
IF so, advantage for the Padres to finish as the 4th seed (vs. lower) and they can stay for round 1 at PETCO and avoid travel. Especially if, as it is now, their opponent would be PHIL and they would be forced to travel from PHIL to SD. Maybe a small plus but still logically a plus.

Can they not finish as the 2 seed, if they remain with the second best record in the NL?
Or are division winners automatically the top 3?
