2020 Playoffs
Quote from fenn68 on September 29, 2020, 12:36 pmI would go with whomever gives the the best chance of winning game 1 then figure out game 2 / game 3 strategy when I have the advantage.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 29, 2020, 12:39 pmWas thinking the same but we don't know how the side sessions went with Clev and Lamet.
Maybe an extra day would help....if so give it to them.
I just would hate to start Lamet and have him exit in the 2nd inning and be done for the postseason.
Of course one more day probably won't make the difference anyway, but if we win game 1 with Davies....and start Paddack in game two, best case scenario these guys could get a few more days rest instead of just one?

Quote from fenn68 on September 29, 2020, 12:46 pmOddly there is a bit of "the way it was" in this years playoffs. We have teams facing each other that have not played each other or common opponents this year. Before expansion / Divisions / inter-league play the AL and NL were the two leagues that never faced each other except in the World Series.
In 2020 the NL and AL are composed of 3 independent leagues effectively creating a lot of that match ups of unknowns. Then the World Series could be the same unless it is an EAST v EAST .. etc.
Hard to look at results / stats of teams from different "leagues" ... such as STL and SD ... given the unknowns around the quality of their opponents during the season. Do the "Central" opponents of STL make them look better or worse? Do the "West" opponents make SD look better or worse?
Like it!

Really boils down to the health of Lamet and Clevinger ... no idea. Just would be afraid to "over think" the strategy for the longer run and blow game 1 putting them in a hole to win two games where a bad bounce or umpire's call costs them the series.
Haven't checked but Davies has to have a history with STL from his MILW days ... yeh, some different players and game in SD but maybe some indication how he handles them. Same at some level goes for Lamet (although his stuff if on is enough). No idea on Clevinger v STL.

There must not have been a Sept 15th "deadline" to be added to 40-man roster to be playoff eligible...
Padres ARE at 39... hmmm...
Did not catch that. Were all the new playoff roster adds (and adds to the 40 man roster) at their team's alternate site (part of the "pool")? Yes. Maybe the Sept 15th requirement was really having to be part of the "60" not only the 40 man roster? Probably; to avoid teams cuttting guys last 2 days of season being picked up by playoff teams as "ringers".
Can't really think of anyone on the Padres "60" but non-roster who I would be all that interested in adding. Think again...
Padres pitching prospect MacKenzie Gore has been in the player pool all year and is now in the postseason bubble
A frenzied trade deadline, in part, ensured that the Padres would not need MacKenzie Gore to make his MLB debut during this COVID-19-shortened season. But he still might or could. Perhaps. Maybe.
The Padres have until Wednesday morning to set their wild-card round roster but Gore — their top prospect and the top pitching prospect in the game — is on the field Tuesday at Petco Park and in the playoff bubble.
Since the Pads 40-man roster is at 39, that means Gore is the only guy not on the 40-man roster in the playoff bubble who is taking the field for practice.
Espinoza 45-IL & was never in 60-man pool (probably in Arizona rehabbing/maybe getting ready for developmental league). Wingenter 45-IL out with TJ Surgery (maybe Arizona too). Not sure what this "means" for 45-IL Jose Castillo who was rehabbing, and 45-IL Kirby Yates who could theoretically be available later on in playoffs? Possible those 2 are in the Quarantine bubble (with team) "voluntarily" as non-field participants (for now) but whose status might allow them to return if someone else were injured, etc?
Anyway, the main point is, Gore is at the very least an emergency consideration. Given the circumstances, his addition would not surprise me at all. He would be extremely intriguing as a "first time seeing him" vs the LH heavy LAD too... as either RP or SP.

Quote from Brian Connelly on September 29, 2020, 1:38 pmWe may in fact go 13 P, 15 position players.... but no matter what, with the uncertainty around Lamet & Clevinger, I don't think they'll leave SP/long arms out for the likes of Stammen or Altavilla... would HAVE to have the coverage in case one of the guys above only lasts an inning or 2, long extra inning game, etc.
Can go fewer P's, but if do, the remaining guys have to be able to go longer... especially for the Padres in our situation.

Agree ... depends a bit on the thinking with Richards who can come in for the long role ... Strahm maybe. If they need to come in to bail BOTH Lamet and Clevinger ... going to be a problem no matter who they keep active.
Apparently Clevinger was doing a bullpen today and throwing hard ... so if nothing goes boom in the night ... should be ready for game 2 or 3. (might depend on the results of game 1).
Have not heard an update on Lamet ... but for now thinking a game 1 start.
Padres will take it to the wire.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 29, 2020, 3:05 pmAstros beating the Twins today.
If I could have my way the Twins,Yankees,Rays and White Sox would all lose so we wouldn’t have to face then in the World Series.
The only one I’m not sure of is the Indians/Yankees.
I think if I had my choice we would face the Astros or the A’s.
Both good teams but neither have the dominant pitching.....or offenses...that the other teams possess.
Plus we already showed we could beat them.
Too soon?

Quote from fenn68 on September 29, 2020, 3:08 pmKevin AceeCardinals manager Mike Shildt said his team is expecting to face Chris Paddack in Game 1.=========================That would be a very interesting way to kick off a 3 game set.
Quote from MrPadre19 on September 29, 2020, 3:15 pmI’m OK with it.
Nothing would be better than to win game one behind either Paddack or Davies.
