2020 In Season Trade ideas

It's still a very small sample size with Grisham & especially Cronenworth, but Mr P, you worded it well that they both pass the "eye" test; particularly on defense where it's obvious they are both MLB caliber with eye-opening play @ CF & 1B so far...
LOVE Grisham's high OBP/eye. Cronenworth hasn't walked at all yet (1/41), but think it's because he's so "new", MLB P's are just going after him... and paying the price. His Minors career he was .283 /.375 with his 2019 in AAA (.329/.422) pulling those WAY up... but historically has always walked/gotten on base. He averages 20+ 2B, 5 3B, but < 10 HR. Also 12 SB lowest any year. But as an older player vs MLB competition, I don't think we should project more than 10-12 HR or SB.
But TWO LH High OBP defensively strong regular position players does inarguably make some prospects make some prospects more expendable. However, look at our 3 Top 75 MLB position player prospects: Abrams (L) - High BA/OBP, Trammell (L) - High BA/OBP, Campusano (R) - High BA/OBP/low K rate.... it would take a lot to part with any of these guys who all have clear paths @ 2B, corner OF, & C. Hopefully days of perennially worst OBP in all of MLB are thing of the past!

After 20 games, our lack of depth is really starting to hurt us, especially from the right side. The bottom of the line-up against the Dodgers yesterday did not scare anybody with Hedges, Olivares and Mateo. I think we should have kept France but now we have to keep him down for 10 days unless someone gets injured/COVID. Still lack a reliable hitting catcher and veteran OF who still has something left in the tank. Starting position players are wearing down and our choices are more limited than moving out some pitchers when the need arises. We can bring back Almonte or Naylor but is that the best we can do? Need to do something soon or its probably 50-50 outcome the rest of the way, which means one of the last playoff spots.

So with the demotion of Clevinger and Plesac.....and the situation surrounding it......are these guys available?
Are they now worth the cost?
I assume every team who is in contention would want them.....do we make an offer?
I just don’t see how Clevinger goes back into that Clubhouse.

Interesting that in the off season the SDUT was saying the club was looking for a better bat for behind the plate yet most assumed we were set.
Is Brian McAnn available? He'd be better than either Hedges or Mejia.
Maybe Torrens can provide some O? Could Campusano possibly get a call should Torrens fail?

Or Plesac who apparently went on an "apology rant" that ticked some players off ... basically left them feeling he still did not see this as a big deal. Frankly both are now carrying some real excess baggage to the point some players are suggesting they would opt out from the rest of the season if they returned.
Probably not available for trade ... Cleveland may just wait until the winter for the dust to settle and have a larger array of potential buyers. Not all that sure that there are many buyers out there given the issue they may cause in the buyer's clubhouse. If Cleveland players are taking the hard line with "two of their own" .... and stupidity does move with the players ... the rest of the league players might not be all that welcoming.
I seem to recall some "personality" issues with Clevinger over the past year or two ... and Plesac seems to have joined him. Both seem like a "me first" mindset.

Atlanta .. still in the hunt ... probably would not give up McCann ... plus at 36 and a FA after the season would not get much for him.
Think they need to give Torrens a full look with Mejia on the IL ... not just a token spot start. Can't really be worse than the Hedges-Mejia duo. He is out of options after this season ... so has to make the active roster in 2021 and they need to see if he can displace the incumbents or they go looking to add a catcher.
As for Campusano ... with only 5 weeks in the season and a need to give Torrens a fair shake ... plus Campusano does not need to be on the roster this winter ... would not want him added just to see him and a token number of AB. Remember he was just an A ball player last year ... POTENTIAL yes but wishfully thinking he is ML ready. Maybe after a half a season in AAA in 2021 or more likely in 2022 he gets a permanent role with the Padres.

A factor in doing a trade .. for the Padres ... is that there are only 23 games scheduled after the trade deadline .... not a lot of time for a new player to make an impact and probably not worth paying a lot to get.
Padres will have to make a bit of a gut call given that small number of SEPT games and where they stand. Might make Preller push to make a deal well ahead of the deadline I guess but are the sellers (of what he wants) willing to sell?
Only a few teams really out of the playoff hunt but are some teams “in the hunt” willing to punt on the 2020 playoffs to get a prospect or clear a contract they don’t want? Does the internal view of their team just say we are not that good ... odd year ... don’t worry about the fans in the short run ... make a move for the long run?

As we've all discussed before, it is going to be VERY difficult to find a seller when so many teams are still in the playoff hunt. I could only see a salary dump/want prospects from a team like Pittsburgh (Polanco?) or Boston (Bradley, potential FA). Neither is tearing up the league right now but these two teams are going nowhere. On the other hand, what would they want - probably way too much to make it worthwhile. Unless someone literally falls in our lap, we probably have to ride it out with what we have. Strange as it may seem, I'm more comfortable with that with regard to our pitchers than our bench players. <2 weeks to know for sure.

Sellers: Boston, Seattle, Royals, likely Angels, Pittsburgh, San Fran, maybe Mets, maybe Nats? Hard to see anyone else just completely falling out of contention the next 10-12 days. If anything, a few teams here might claw their way back in.
Cleveland a weird circumstances $/payroll driven now compounded by the Clevenger & Plesac situation....
My main target: Back of Bullpen help. Ideally a pending FA "rental" like: Brandon Workman - Boston's "Closer". Not getting much work. Bad WHIP in only 6 games. FA next year. 3.5 MM prorated salary. Heath Hembree on Boston pitching very well. 2nd year of Arb @ 1.6 MM; would "cost" a lot more in trade though.
But Boston may as well dump a little $ with Workman & get a prospect for him.
Other candidates from these teams?
I would look for Preller to be an "early" Buyer around the upcoming day off. Get the new player in while the team is in SD, not on the road...
