2020 In Season Trade ideas

PreviousPage 4 of 43Next

A really slim market. Wonder what salary the Padres would take for the last 5 weeks of the season (6 starts?). If the player was a FA after the season, only maybe 1/5th of the annual salary in play but a couple of million off a seller’s book might appeal and lessen any player return ... which should not be much for a 5 week rental.

If Preller is really looking ... think he is signaling that he is not ready to gamble on the prospects in a pennant run if they really have a shot at the playoffs. Have to agree.

Lucchesi - Quantrill - Patino - Perdomo - Eickhoff - Morejon - Baez - et al may be better 2021 options but at this point in time would not know which one to gamble with.

Don’t know what is too much in prospect terms for 6 starts ... but doubt Preller will dip into any prospect that has a big future.

Yesterday Fenn, you said that Quantrill had a 4.50 ERA and hadn't been pitching well enough to trust with the #5 spot in our rotation. Well, as of right now he has an ERA of 3.18 and a WHIP of 1.15. What a difference a day makes!

Now, I am not trying to insult you Fenn. Obviously if his ERA can change that much over an additional 3 or 4 innings then it doesn't mean much. But that also means that his subpar 4.50 he had yesterday means very little. Maybe he should get a chance before we make a trade. We cannot get a high quality starter without paying a high price. Even just a solid starter is extremely costly in today's market! Look at what our fans are expecting to get in return when they suggest trading Quantrill or Lucchesi. Unless we trade both of those guys together AND another good prospect, we are not going to get anyone noticeably better than these guys. Maybe we should just give Quantrill a real chance. I don't see the need for a trade for a starter at this time.

Remember I did reference his 2019 performance over 18 starts ... just can't ignore that based on a few innings. It would seem that Preller is not. Tingler dodged the question on who gets that 5th slot next outing ... pushing the decision out a few days.

I would guess if this were a "normal" season ... after 17 games .... we would see Quantrill (or one of the other internal options) getting a long look for #5 or if the Padres were on a trajectory for a non-playoff season the internal options would get the nod.

However, for the 6 - 8 starts in a playoff run thinking they may be looking for a short term veteran that ... in their minds ... gives them a better chance for a couple of extra wins. Doubt Preller pulls off a deal ... first finding a decent available option is a long shot but also doubt Preller would over pay with a top prospect.

Don't see why Preller should not be looking for an upgrade for #5 given none of the internal options have a proven track record ... let them battle in ST 2021.

If (as likely) Preller is focusing on a 4-6 week rental ... not going to take a lot if the Padres take the remainder of the contract. Something more aligned with a Cordero / Bolanos level.

For the record ... low odds Preller pulls this off since at this point don't really know of many sellers.

You guys are looking at this backwards.....if I am a team looking for a 5th starter then what other team am I looking at to trade with.............San Diego....they have a bunch of guys who COULD be that 5th starter if given the same chance they gave Joey Luchessi.

Luchessi got what....2 years plus before they sent him down ?

Quantrill would be or should be at the top of everybodies list......and even though Fenn says let them prove it next year in ST.....Quantrill already did that this year in ST and it wasn't even close....Quantrill out pitched Luchessi all spring

Why is AJ Preller looking for a 5th starter when he has one ready to go ?  Just give him the job and let him go at it...his whole mental approach will change and if he has 3 or 4 starts and is at least better than Luchessi or a "Bullpen" start then you solved your problem without trading ANYBODY

Could Quantrill be any worse than some of the other guys the Padres have trotted out there in the last two years that were given a chance ?     Margivivacus, Mitchell, Kennedy, Lockett, Allan.......NO

Give Quantrill the spot and the ball and roll the dice.....I like the odds of rolling a 7 and if that stabilizes the back end of the rotation then the Padres are in very good shape moving forward.....Paddack, Lamet, Richards, Davies and Quantrill......there are a lot of teams that would kill to have that rotation as their starting five

I would be more concerned with the Catcher position.....Great Defense by a real catcher but so screwed up at the plate I don't know if he will ever figure it out.......somebody has got to get through to him that his approach doesn't work and then you have a better athlete and a better bat but is a very much work in progress as a catcher in all aspects of the position

Could Torrens or Campusano really be that far away that either one could not be better than Mejia behind the plate and better than Hedges at the plate combined ?

Quantrill has the pockets of performance where he looks like a world-beater and then he has pockets where he can't get any of his pitches working, starts walking people and then gets hit hard.  Like Strahm, he seems to be doing a lot better as a relief pitcher this year so why take him out of his comfort zone.  Perdomo has not proven he can be a long relief guy and we have no other long relief RHs but Quantrill if you buy into Patino being stretched out as a starter.  Eickhoff could be that guy and so could Baez, but apparently neither has impressed enough to get into a game.  For me, you keep Quantrill hungry and working as a RP and find/bring up someone, if not Patino, to do the spot start or do the occasional bullpen day.

We’ve traded for Yonder Alonso?

I guess Naylor isn’t coming back.

Do we really need another LH bat off the bench?

Who’s spot does he take?

Non-roster player .... for now so no moves necessary.

They didn’t go out and get him to put him at USD though did they?

Other than my snarky comment that this was just to make Manny happy (and apparently that worked) ... might have a baseball implication:

1. Are they worried that Hosmer’s loss of weight from the gastritis ... and the chance of a relapse could end him on the IL? With Cronenworth looking as though he as secured 2B  LHH PH/DH options are reduced.

2. Is Preller dangling Naylor out there as a trade chip ... or have they given up on him?

3. Not that Alonso has much left in the tank but for LHH DH/PH: Alonso vs. Garcia vs. Profar vs. Naylor vs. Almonte  ... take two.

Don’t expect Alonso to be called up (baring an IL to Hosmer) but OK insurance. Plus he is reportedly a nice guy.

For now ... yes. He was non-roster with Atlanta and been a hanger on in MLB for the past few years.

Acee seems to think they added him to mentor the ”kids” at the alternative site and give Gore a “professional hitter” to work against.
