2020 In Season Trade ideas
Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 4, 2020, 2:12 pmIf Mejia and Hedges continue to struggle I think James McCann would make a lot of sense as a trade target. The White Sox already have Yasmani Grandal as their primary catcher and with Edwin Encarnacion as a pure DH their ability to get him in the lineup is limited. They also have Zack Collins ready to replace him. He's also set to be a free agent after the season so the price shouldn't be too high.
The White Sox offense has been great this year, but their starting pitching is terrible and their bullpen isn't much better. I would think some of our arms would have some appeal to them. Maybe something like Lucchesi for McCann and a second-tier prospect.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 4, 2020, 2:45 pmMcCann would be a good pick-up but don't think the Sox are going to let him go. Too much of a drop-off between Grandal and Collins if Collins is the 2nd catcher. Need to rest Grandal occasionally and Sox believe they have enough to get to the playoffs even without making a deal for a pitcher. I'd be very surprised if they entertained a trade for McCann and I don't think dangling Lucchesi is enough to entice them or anyone else to give up a solid back-up catcher.

I disagree. They have enough offense to make up for the drop off between McCann and Collins. Lucchesi would immediately become their #3 starter and he has 3 more years of control left while McCann is set to be a FA. If anything they should be adding something to McCann to get him. I bet they would jump at the chance to make a straight up trade.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 7, 2020, 10:47 amIt's great to share our thoughts on what the Front Office should do whether we agree or disagree. If the Sox want Lucchesi, looks like he is available; he might be at the alternate training site for awhile to adjust his mechanics and become more effective and efficient.
On a different thread, I had proposed trying to obtain C Christian Vasquez from Boston or Todd Frazier from Texas since both these teams don't seem to be going anywhere and may want some decent (but not elite) prospects along with a current roster player to make the trade. Unfortunately, soon after both started hitting like crazy making a possible deal much tougher. I agree with Fenn and others that there probably are going to be very few deals by mid-August for the Padres and other teams and certainly not for elite players like Lindor or Merrifield. Might see a Jackie Bradley type player available, but he would be a one-month rental before free agency, so I hope we don't bite on that kind of deal unless the prospect cost is very low.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 7, 2020, 11:06 amThe Braves are also a team in desperate need of starting pitching.
They should make the playoffs anyway but they've gotten very thin and even Joey could help them.

Quote from fenn68 on August 7, 2020, 11:49 amSort of a question as to which (if any team) panics before the trade deadline and pushes for a deal. Not only gauging were their roster stands and where they are in the standings but trying to get a read on the other contenders. Three weeks can change a lot for everyone including the alternatives in play if they want to deal.
With 16 teams getting in and quite a few staying in the running well into September and probably very few “locks” by the end of August ... trades are just going to be hard to make. Plus even the contenders are not likely to give up a quality prospect for a fringe player given the uncertain landscape. Teams may view their “better” back-ups on their 60 more value as insurance than the fringe player added.
Sort of teams will want to add reinforcements but will not give any quality in return ... so why even make the effort by the seller to sell. Exception usually is an unwanted contract that runs into 2021 but given everyone financial concerns ... that may not even play.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 7, 2020, 2:17 pmVazquez was a guy I thought might make sense as a target too. Seems like his value is probably at it's absolute peak right now though. I'm sure the Red Sox would have a high asking price given his contract and recent production. You would have to be pretty confident that his breakout from last year and the early portion of this year is legit to make a deal.
It'll be interesting to see how active the trade market is this year. A team getting hot or going cold over the next few weeks could completely change their outlook. I'm with you guys in that I don't expect a lot of deals to get done, but I find the situation very intriguing.

Quote from fenn68 on August 10, 2020, 3:27 pmRumor mode today.
One rumor (not validated) has Preller calling around to acquire a SP ... not a major piece mind you ... but probably a veteran upgrade for #5.
=====
I guess with a short season and every game an elimination game theme .... can't afford to "develop" a prospect in the #5 slot. One additional win there may be the difference in making the playoffs (or seeding) in the NL West.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 10, 2020, 4:22 pmI can see such a trade, even a 6 week rental, as long as we don't give up any top prospects. I'll take a look at who could be some likely suspects.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 10, 2020, 4:42 pmNot a whole lot out there with injuries and opt outs; most are way above our salary structure. Only one that caught my attention was Rancho Bernardo guy Trevor Williams whose with the Pirates. There's got to be others, but it seems like a really slim market. What we have might be better than what is out there without giving up way too much for this short season.
