2020 In Season Trade ideas

Quote from WindsorUK on August 22, 2020, 8:27 amAs much as I'd like to boost our roster with a plus addition, I certainly would not give up anything remotely valuable.
This team, as it is currently constructed, has the talent to compete in the post season. And if by some miracle Manny Machado turns into the Manny Machado we paid $300 million for, and our incredibly raw, novice manager figures out how to use a bullpen that EVERYONE thought was stacked, we might actually have a chance to beat the Bums 100 miles north of us.

It is Hembree who was not a Padre (a RP named Embree was in the early 2000's .. different guy). Kennedy was a Padre.

Quote from fenn68 on August 22, 2020, 9:31 amWhen Pomeranz comes back off IL ... probably Perdomo back down.
IF Preller adds a RP he needs to be considered better (in September) than: Baez or Patino or Morejon ... one of which would get optioned since they can be and still need insurance for injuries that are more common in 2020. If it would be Morejon that probably means Quantrill gets moved to SP at #5.
Sort of adds the factor of giving up assets for the "incremental" difference in the short term. Does that suggest Preller should just stay away from the "marginal" RP options?
May not like the current performance levels of Pagan, Stammen, Johnson, and Guerra but they are controlled into the future, can't option Stammen, Johnson, or Guerra, and are their "small sample size" failings more representative than the "small sample size" successes of any potential trade target. More difficult evaluation than we may think to get an incremental boost.
Lack of current scouting also hurts ... don't think "stats" and TV scouting is the same as the eyeball test during live outings. Small current sample sizes are not reliable indicators.
Might boil that down to finding a RP that will produce incremental value over Baez or Patino in September ... and how much determines if it is worth the deal.

On the other hand we need to take full advantage of this current playoff structure and the way the team is playing.
While the season is short once you reach the playoffs it’s just like any other season.
We haven’t been there in over a decade.
If we have to overpay to “ensure” we make it or to improve our chances of winning once we get there.....IMO we need too.I’m certainly not talking about idiotic moves or losing top prospects for just this season. But any move that Preller is willing to make we have to assume he’s thought them through.
Any prospects in our top 10 needs to bring back something that will help this year and beyond.
Outside the top 10 it just depends on the return.

Quote from fenn68 on August 22, 2020, 1:00 pmOther than the KC three (maybe only 2 since Kennedy is not doing well) ... which RPs (who are pitching well) are on the market and better than Baez may be this year? Maybe some we would want on the trade market ... but no indication they are.
Preller is reportedly looking ... is it possible he goes “big” on someone we are not thinking of (or not being bandied about as trade bait) that has an immediate and longer term value? Well within Preller’s style ... while the others pursue the “rentals” such as Rosenthal ... Preller goes another direction?
Maybe not with a team out of contention but with a team in contention but in real need of a SP or OF/DH offense ... to make their playoff run.

I have no idea who would fit into this category as a target now, but coming into the season I thought the medium contract predictable control of Stammen & esp Pierce Johnson would fit as part of a cost offset in a trade. So my (pre covid) thought was, you could acquire a more costly contract, but offset it some by having 1 of those guys go back in the trade.
Two obvious problems: 1) "Need" both guys since pen already hit hard. 2) That formula was really more for a "non-bullpen" piece. Now would only work if there was an expensive effective RP, but the trading team wanted to backfill?

Quote from fenn68 on August 22, 2020, 1:44 pmCurrently in the random though mode.
If, hypothetically, KC and SD are deep in discussions on Rosenthal .... KC is just holding out for a substantial overpay for one month (and post season) ... yet SD likes Rosenthal and believes he would be an asset in 2021 post-Yates .... could SD ask for a window to negotiate with Rosenthal's agent on a 2021 extension (making Rosenthal more valuable to SD) and if they work that out ... offer more to get the deal done?
Basically offer more for a 2020-21 Rosenthal than just a 2020 Rosenthal ... KC benefits with the better return ... and depending on the terms of the extension Rosenthal may benefit for not being in next winter's questionable FA market ... and SD may benefit from securing a closer / late inning quality RP without chasing the FA market or counting on a Pagan rebound or someone developing.
