2020 Draft
Quote from fenn68 on May 26, 2020, 3:39 pmMax Meyer is certainly interesting. Billed has a bulldog mentality with a 100 MPH FB and a wipeout slider and was very effective in College (did pitch 4 games this spring before the shutdown). That combo suggests an early pick ... especially with a combo of multiple years of scouting and recent observations this spring ... know what you are buying.
BUT some evaluators note he is something like 6'/ 185 .... adding some real question on his longevity / long term health and may be viewed more a ML RP in the long run than a starter thinking his stuff will not last deep into games. That suggests not an early pick (small RP are not prime targets early).
Evaluators choice I guess ... not sure how many organizations want to take those risks (or take a RP) early rather going for a projected everyday player or a starter.
I can see why some would have him going early and others late.
=========
I hope that "best player available" is a position player (preferably HS hitter) (in the mold of CJ Abrams) with major hitting skills and major upside potential for the long haul.
If it is a pitcher ... so be it ... but with all the pitching talent arriving near term (or here already) .... he will have to be something real special (hard to envision at pick #8) to see him ML as a starter any time soon.

Quote from fenn68 on May 27, 2020, 11:47 amWell another mock draft from Dan Zielinski (Baseball Prospect Journal): Padres top 3 picks:
Garrett Michell (CF) ... UCLA
Jordan Walker (3B) ... HS
Jared Jones (RHP) ... HS
=====
For no particular reason, I see a Mitchell comp ... highly ranked draft prospect in 2017 (#6) Jaren Kendall ... both college ... both LHH CF with a lot of tools ... who got drafted by the LAD mid-1st round. Did not turn out that well.
Maybe Mitchell is a better hitter?

Quote from hoffy51 on May 27, 2020, 6:51 pmDoes anyone know if the Padres, mob, or any other organization gives psychological tests to the potential draftees. When coaching football years ago I met Dr. Robert Troutwine, who, at the time, had a psychological profile called the TAP (the Troutwine Athletic Profile), which was given to the over 600 participants in the NFL combine. I used it with college football players and it was uncanny. It saved me from spending a lot of time grooming a freshman quarterback who had all the physical attributes you would want but would wilt under pressure and couldn't lead his way out of a wet paper bag. It is still in use today.

Quote from JasonE135 on May 29, 2020, 11:54 pmMax Meyer- 6'0",185 RHP FB:93-97 touches 100, still hits 98 in 9th in. Luis Patino- 6'0",190 RHP FB:93-97 touches 99. Both have great sliders. Patino's grades 60, Meyer's 70
So...Meyer may just work out as a starter. He maintains his FB speed all game. If the Padres take him at #8, it is because they believe he can be a starter. If their scouts believe in him I would love for us to get him.
If not him a plus left-handed bat is still a huge need for us. Yes, we need more power coming up since none of our top prospects have a lot, but far more importantly we need people who can actually hit the ball consistently. Mitchell, Hassell and Veen all have 60 grade bats. Walker has a 45 grade bat and is known to have holes in his swing. Yes he could improve and yes he has huge power but the last thing we need is another Renfroe. Let's take guys who we know can hit and hope maybe they can develop power later as the grow and mature.

Why do we need Padre's doctors to tell us about Mitchell hoffy51? Was he injured?

Quote from hoffy51 on May 30, 2020, 3:39 amAny team that drafts him will need to feel comfortable with taking a player that high with Type 1 diabetes.

I get it...but Walker is 17.
There aren’t too Many 17 year olds that already have a ML refined swing.
Its a lot easier to refine a swing than to teach size,strength and power.
I’m sure 8 is too high for Walker......but if we don’t get him with our 2nd pick I think we will regret taking a guy just because he’s left handed over him.
Ive been wrong before....like the time I thought I was wrong but I was really right.
