2020 Draft

PreviousPage 4 of 20Next

Robert Hassell .... LHH HS OF is one to watch out for ... kid can hit (60 grade) and for me that is the main factor for a position player.

Padres seem to be an organization that will take some risk for high upside and HS kids with more development time under their philosophy .... plus recently they seem to be more focused on bat to ball skills as a hitter and less so players with swing and miss tendencies. With a pretty packed farm system ... no pressure to lean towards a college player. Still "best player available" based on Padre criteria is the pick.

I still want Jordan Walker.

Perfect Game has him as their #2 HS prospect and #10 overall.

Was #1 HS earlier this year....not sure what changed but still.

He's 6'5" 220lbs as a HS Senior,big power with more coming and throws 93.

Oh....and his parents went to M.I.T. and Harvard and has a commitment to Duke(smart kid).

With his size and arm if he doesn't stay at 3b he could easily move to 1b or even RF.

Heard a comment from some scouts that they are being really "hamstrung" by the higher ups as it relates to the upcoming draft. Not sure what the means ... clearly more than just the 5 round limit.

Are the owners putting restrictions on the money available to sign draftees and maybe a real cap on the signing of non-drafted players. Are the scouts are being limited in the freedom to spend to contact prospective draftees, pay for the independent analysis of prospects.

With the owners doing furloughs for ops and non-ops personnel, cutting draft rounds, trimming minor league costs, and proposing more cuts to player salaries .... likely some real operational restrictions for the scouting department.

Jordan Walker has very big power and is a high quality athlete, but Mlb isn't as high on him. They have him ranked as their #33 prospect. They give his hit tool a 45-grade and say he has a long swing with a few holes that comes with being 6'5". I like him and I would like it if the Padres got him in the supplemental first round. But not at #8. I think we should get much more of a sure thing at #8.

Robert Hassell seems like a very good prospect. If the Padres took him I would be okay with it. Personally, him having a sweet LH swing with plus hitting ability is very nice. However, seeing as he has average power, just above average arm and speed and projects to a corner OF spot, I would rather have Garrett Mitchell. He is college instead of HS so he will require less development time. He has 70-speed and a 60-arm as opposed to 55 for both for Hassell. Their bats and power grade out equal. I would rather have the guy who can play CF, has huge range, a stronger arm and can steal some bases. But if the Padres scouts have more confidence in Hassell's hitting ability, I would trust them.

Most like Mitchell's all around skill set ... and most think he will be gone by #8. Only negative by a scout or two is a bit of a swing and miss in his approach ... not major issue for them but worth note.

Guessing College types will go early (and also probably heavily) across the board. Just "safer" with a history of scouting that extends back to HS and a couple years of college ... teams keep long deep data bases. The development of HS types between Jr. and Sr. season can be enormous (or non existent) ... hard to be comfortable with a projection based on his Jr. year work and even more risky for an early 1st round pick.

Good chance the Padres will have a shot at whomever they feel is the best HS prospect ... and Preller loves high upside risk. Of course, HS kids who want to sign for "over slot" might just slide ... teams will not have the flexibility to create a lot of under slot picks with only 5 picks. Everyone knows the issues this draft ... so prospects will be squeezed into slot and will have to accept or go to college ... so the HS kid sliding down the board will not get bailed out with an over slot by some creative team.

The limited ability to have negotiation and strategy around HS kids makes it even safer to go college where coming to a slot agreement is "easier".

Actually Mitchell has been getting mocked in the 10-20 range recently. It now seems almost certain that he will be there at #8. The first HS bat is almost universally seen as Been, and he has been mocked at 5 or 6. Just fyi. The newest mock draft has us taking Max Meyer. I would be okay with that. I really want a big time bat in this draft, but I will be happy as long as we get someone with real potential who is likely to make it to the majors.

I saw the lower rankings for Walker but if he turns into the power hitter he projects as you take him where you can.

I would of course be ecstatic if he was available after our first selection...just don't see him getting past the Yankees or a couple others near the bottom of the first round.

In hindsight we should have taken Mike Piazza with our first selection in 1988....or certainly instead of Kelly Lifgren at #31 or Squeezer Thompson at #84!

lol

Zac Veen anyone?

I think everybody loves Zack Veen. He is widely expected to be the first high-schooler drafted and should be gone at 5 or 6. If not we should DEFINITELY take him.

Looking at the latest mock drafts I've seen Max Meyer as high as 5th and as low as "not in the first round"?

I don't think there's any way he isn't taken in the top 15 but I prefer a bat.

I did read somewhere that if rosters are set at 30 for this season it's not out of the question that Meyer could pitch in the majors "this year".

Also that he has the best slider in the draft.

I don't know.....for some reason I don't like the idea of taking him though?

Anyone else have a feel for this kid versus the bats that may be available?

Ed Howard is another kid I have my eye on....but he's rated more to the bottom of the round.

It's just my opinion if you like a guy enough to take anywhere in the first round you can take him at #8.

Imagine those who didn't take Mike Trout in the top 10 because he wasn't ranked that high!...doh!

I'm hoping no one agrees with me about Jordan Walker and we can get Veen or Hassell in the first round and Walker in the second!
