One ... he broke for 3B ... the pitcher stepped off and pivoted threw to 2nd as Margot was heading back ... then a rundown ensued.
On the good side Margot hit the ball squarely a couple of times to deep CF and a liner to LF .... plus had a hit in his 3 PA.
Padres did show some muscle in this game ... Reyes hit a gargantuan HR to LF ... Potts hit one over the CF batter's eye ... A.Allen crushed one to CF .... plus Mejia and Kinsler hit it out.
All in all they looked good today except when they got to the fringe RP. Although Margevicius got tagged of 3 runs in 3 innings they were all right out of the block in the 1st ... the plus being he composed himself and got out of the 1st and settled down for the 2nd and 3rd.
Still ST so nothing really to conclude yet.

Any time a runner breaks away from the base on a pickoff, it is recorded as both a PO and CS. It's why sometimes you'll see catcher stat breakdowns that isolate the non-PO CS. Padres catchers' CS rates looked slightly better than they actually were last year thanks to Eric Lauer.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 9, 2019, 6:03 amSo I understand the need to limit innings for guys coming off of TJ like Paddack.
I understand they have a number of innings in their minds for the regular season.
But shouldn't the innings in ST factor in as well?
Time warming up and throwing bullpen sessions?
While I'm sure they do you never hear anything about limiting these "innings".
Throwing is throwing to a certain extent. While warming up isn't putting the same stress on the arm pitching in ST certainly is.
Couldn't we(the Padres) limit the number of bullpens and ST innings for Paddack and maybe gain at least an extra start or two in the regular season?
I guess there's a fine line between stretching him out/getting him ready for the season..... and throwing too many pitches before the season ever starts?

Quote from fenn68 on March 9, 2019, 6:51 amI suspect they have the ST work into their innings limit thinking but if they want to have Paddack in the ML (and successful) they need to get him fully ready in ST.
Paddack did pitch 90 innings last season and that may have been the consideration of returning from TJ. In 2019 the innings limit may just be more to do with not wanting him (probably applies to most young pitchers) to increase his workload by more than X%.

... And so it begins
3 weeks out from ST & the question gets broached. Imagine if Pads are hanging around in standings, he's our best SP, and no help in sight... do we risk 1 more, and 1 more, and 1 more ....
He has been fantastic, and looks to have earned a spot. Even being Prez of "hold him back" fan club, don't see any way they can.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 9, 2019, 10:27 amThinking of September is why I was asking if there was any advantage to “holding him back” now,in Sprong Training instead of later in the season when it matters.
I realize limiting his innings now gets in the way of getting him ready....but how much?
I guess that’s the ultimate question and I assume it’s dofferent for every pitcher.
But does Paddack really need another 20 innings in the Spring to get ready?
Does he need to throw side sessions?
Again why I thought the piggybacking idea could work.
Limit his innings early in the season while not costing us a chance to win those games and over taxing the Bullpen.
Paddack/Strahm for 5th Starter!
🙂
