2019 Spring Training Thread
Quote from fenn68 on March 9, 2019, 11:42 amSince the odds of the Padres being in contention in Aug - Sept is very low (at least by Vegas odds) .... I would rather worry about that eventuality if it occurs.
Actually would focus on getting out of the gates strong and do some winning in Apr-May and work on the development of all the prospect arms as full time SP. IF deploying the five best arms on a full basis is needed ... just do it. Then if the team shows that it has a chance to be in it .... use June - July to ease back the workload (6th starter or skipping a start or two) so in August - September they can be somewhat rested but fully stretched out to go deep into games.
From a different perspective ... I would not have Strahm as the piggyback option ... too good as a late RP and now with Castillo down a real need. So, either he takes a starting role or the late RP role. The piggyback role with Paddack eliminates a potential impact LHRP or exposes the #4 / #5 SP slot to ?????. IF they need to back-up Paddack ... more likely go with Warren / Erlin.

Not heard any injury concern ... suspect they are just working him in the "B" games and allowing some other arms get time in front of Green. Then again we never are sure.

Hope this little speedy guy gets significant playing time in LE ... might be a fun watch.

Quote from sportwarrior on March 11, 2019, 10:09 amI was at the games on Friday and Sunday. I don't have any robust or insightful notes to offer, but I can give a few casual ones:
- Paddack looked fantastic on Friday. His demeanor is very impressive and he looks like does exactly what he wants on the mound. If his curve comes along he's going to be a #1. Even if it doesn't, though, he has me convinced he can be a very good 2 pitch starter.
- Renfroe looked good on Friday as well. His plate appearances were very good and he smoked the ball on a line twice.
- There was a parade of prospects in the 2nd half of the game: Buddy Reed, Xavier Edwards, Tirso Ornelas, Owen Miller, Austin Allen, Grant Little, Tucupita Marcano. Most looked like 19 year-olds playing against more advanced players, but Owen Miller and Austin Allen both had good at bats.
- Xavier is very fast.
- Buddy Reed is too, but his swing and approach at the plate strike me as being too far behind his age and level. Seeing him at the plate reinforced the feeling that Lake Elsinore was just a mirage.
- I saw plenty of Hudson Potts. I still very much like the kid, but he looked overmatched all weekend.
- Josh Naylor is still fat, still terrible in the OF, and every time he makes you think he's faster than a 20 on the speed scale, he does something to remind you why he's rated so poorly. He's a nice hitter, but I just do not like him.
- Urias looked good at the plate. He didn't have anything to show for it, but he hit the ball hard a few times and demonstrated a good eye.
- Michael Gettys indeed has some tools. He moved around the diamond impressively and absolutely blasted a ball deep over the fence but foul. It's fun to think what he could do with better pitch recognition. Still just 23.
- You can see why Cal Quantrill may get a call to the bigs despite his underwhelming stats in the minors. He's got good stuff that plays well against developed bats. If he can get his command and control where it needs to be he can be a very effective 3rd starter.

Robbie Podrosky gets another hit on Sunday ... and steals 3 bases. Love the underdog.
I know the odds of him even making it successfully to AA/AAA is a long shot ... especially given the normal outcomes for older (24) small college (McNeese State) undersized (5'8" / 170) who was not even selected until the 25th round (2017) and only played part time in low A in 2018. The perfect guy to root for to have success as far as he can go.
We will see how he handles A+ but looking at his FW stats ... enough production to put the blinders on and dream on his success continuing. Consider in 205 AB:
overall: 366/420/463 (OPS 883)
home: 356/420/446 ... away 375/420/481
first half: 333/376/448 ... second half: 390/450/475
v LHP: 349/364/372 ... v RHP: 370/433/488
scoring position: 400/476/545
late/close: 350/381/450
plus had 23 stolen bases in 57 games.
Cheer for the UNDERDOG.
