Who will replace Melvin next year ?
Quote from Randy Manese on October 23, 2023, 4:52 pmMelvin will likely move on and Padres can extract some compensation (International Signing Bonus Money?) for letting him out of his contract. SF is his perfect end of career job and he will take it. I also think Shildt is the probable replacement.

Quote from BoosterSD on October 24, 2023, 10:58 amWell, according to MLBTR Melvin is going to SF. No word on any compensation or not for Melvin.
This is now; again, entirely Preller's show. Whether it turns to a S*@t Show or not will be played out on the field in 2024. I still think that this is Preller's last hurrah, depending on the outcome of the season.
Big question, is it Flaherty or Shildt that takes over as manager. I was pretty confident that it was going to be Shildt, but after reading an article last night on The Athletic, it could be Flaherty. I call it 50/50 at this point.

Quote from WindsorUK on October 24, 2023, 12:44 pmWell, if Flaherty has never managed before, I'm sure that is who the extremely insecure Mr. Preller will choose.
Actually, I'm surprised he chose Melvin in the first place. In retrospect, I'm sure it was Seidler( other owners) who TOLD him to hire Melvin.
We've got enough talent here to win( at least for the foreseeable future). Let's hope the ineptitude of management doesn't sidetrack us.

Quote from JasonE135 on October 24, 2023, 5:22 pmUnfortunately management doesn't matter for the Padres. Whoever is hired will just be a figurehead put into place to carry out Preller's orders and take bullets for him when he screws up. No great or even good manager will want to work under the conditions they will be under in San Diego. Melvin was an almost universally respected baseball manager and coach when he came here. Anyone else we get will be a step down.

Quote from fenn68 on October 24, 2023, 8:07 pmInteresting lesson on MLB procedures … rules.
1. SF fires their manager … reportedly liked Melvin as the replacement but cannot talk to him (or his agent) …if they do it would be tampering and some sort of penalty.
2. SF would like to get Melvin after he is fired (and gets paid by SD) by just extending him for more years … so they wait
3. Press asks Melvin if he will return … has no choice but to say he will he as he is under contract … otherwise he would have to quit and forfeit $4MM
4. Press asks Preller if Melvin will return … has no choice but to say he will be as he is under contract … otherwise the would have to fire him and the Padres eat the $4MM
5. SF has been waiting for the firing … Preller would not oblige … so they then had to FORMALLY ask for permission to interview Melvin and the Padres had to FORMALLY grant permission.
6. At this point I would expect IF (no certainty) that the Giants want to sign Melvin … they must formally ask the Padres for his release … Padres could choose to put conditions BUT have to be careful about overplaying their hand and have SF choose to pass on Melvin … Padres get to keep Melvin and then what? Don’t think the Padres had to give any compensation to get Melvin.
99% sure Melvin will go to SF … Preller should be happy getting rid of Melvin and saving $4MM while likely pay less for his replacement.

Quote from fenn68 on October 24, 2023, 8:36 pmThink it has to be between Shildt and Flaherty… given the veteran team with some sort of relationship with each … should create some continuity (Siedler likes that) … bring in an outsider and risk of a period of adjustment may cost them some games early in the season and ultimately the playoffs.
Does anyone know if both (or either) Shildt or Flaherty are under contract for 2024? Could either of them be under consideration of other managerial openings?
Tough to guess on this one.
Shildt was a very successful manager for STL … got fired in a difference of philosophy with the GM (sound familiar) but “apparently” is aligned with Preller … wonder why no other team has approached him about their managerial vacancy? Would think a successful veteran manager would slide in well with the veterans on this team … but really don’t know his personality. What will Machado think?
Flaherty on the other hand is Machado’s guy … apparently is a favorite of Preller … most seem to see him as a top managerial prospect … but never managed. Would he work for Machado and Preller but because of that rub some others the wrong way? Coach is different than Manager. However, if he is not selected, does he bolt to another team to manage?
Shildt is the “safe” pick given the experience / success but leaning towards Flaherty … Manny’s guy, apparently in sync with Preller, does not have the baggage of being fired by STL for differences with the GM, … cheaper?

Quote from fenn68 on November 1, 2023, 1:58 amAs usual the Padres are keeping the candidates beyond Shildt and Flaherty under wraps … however, apparently they are doing other interviews.
Yesterday a couple of names came out …. Phil Nevin … Eric Chavez (but no longer in the mix) … and they are “negotiating” with Benji Gil on setting up an interview. Appears to be others.
Maybe just “eyewash” to satisfy MLB requirements and maybe just an opportunity to pick the brains of others on their strategies / other players?

Quote from fenn68 on November 3, 2023, 2:05 pmPadres to interview Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza for manager job.
So now Shildt, Flaherty, Niebla, Benji Gil, Carlos Mendoza, and Nevin (but not sure the interview happened).

Quote from fenn68 on November 8, 2023, 11:20 amTime for some different speculation (not to the rumor level).
Consensus has been (and really still is) it is a toss up between Shildt and Flaherty. Benji is is just along for ride … but could still be a surprise.
First, in my mind, neither Shildt (who I don’t like) and Flaherty (who I just don’t know) is that compelling … so don’t really care.
So, Gil has a chance … his managerial skills at this point can’t be determined as worse than the other two … he has been very successful in the Mexican League / Team Mexico both in an “intense” environment.
However, step away from managerial skills and think money and marketing. A Padre manager from Mexico will open a lot of marketing doors in Mexico … probably a lot more than we think. Note that the President of Mexico the other day endorsed Gil as the Padre manager plus a major stakeholder in the Padres is a billionaire from Mexico (Hilo) who has been supplying some of the additional capital to fund the Padres spending and that could give him some influence. Signing Gil would be a big thing in Mexico. All that translates into money (a Padre need).
Then, in some minds, having a Latin manager will sit well with Machado, Bogaerts, Tatis, and Soto … the core of the team.
Should note that most say Gil has an “edge” and can be quite hard nosed when needed.
Can he work with Preller? Can anyone work with Preller? Still a long shot BUT if there is dissent in the front office … the input from the financial folks at Seidler Investemets, the other minority owners (Harp Hilo et al) and the business side may override Preller given his track record coupled with the monetary potential.
Just a different slant while we are left hanging.
