Who will replace Melvin next year ?

PreviousPage 2 of 6Next

From a quick read on MLBTR, its sounds as if there was a productive meeting yesterday between the higher ups; including Melvin, and it seems as it will be status quo for next season.

I do think that Preller is on the hot seat for next season, and that we could see house cleaning at the end of next season depending on the teams performance.

For now, it looks as if we see leadership stay the same and a focus on moves to build the team around a $200M payroll.

UT dropped today that both Preller and Melvin will be remaining with the Padres for 2024.

I am relieved that Melvin will be here. Preller as well, to a point, provided he absolutely redefines his relationships and reevaluates the power dynamics of the front office.

Regarding Melvin and Preller...the old adage of "Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you read" seems to be true.

Writers of articles stating that this thing is broken beyond repair missed big time but they got the clicks and people talking about it.

The thing that bothered me was that Melvin and Preller didn't swing the bat or throw one pitch this year so if you want to place blame...try the players...collectively they didn't get it done.

I wound add that not sure the "dysfunction" between Preller and Melvin really had all that much impact on field performance (I also focus on the players underperforming and don't think that because of Preller or Melvin).

I have worked in enough situations where I did not get along with my boss (different views on direction, management style) and had employees who did not like me (for a lot of reasons) but when it came down to the work product everyone did their job as best they could and those issues did not alter the result.

Put this one to bed ... MELVIN just told the AP he is returning as Padres manager for 2024.

Well this is going to be interesting

Padres Permit Bob Melvin To Interview For Giants' Managerial Position - MLB Trade Rumors

Melvin flat out lied to the press...next manager will be ???

Former Padre....Phil Nevin or current coaches...Mike Shildt or Ryan Flaherty ?

I'm thinking Shilt because he agreed to work for Preller and I think the idea was for him to replace Melvin anyway when Melvins contract was up...they have already done the young , no experience manager thing...Andy Green ( Disaster is the only word that comes to mind) and Jayce Tingler ( Nice Guy but the moment was too big for him) so Flaherty would be a no go...he will get a chance to manage just not in San Diego

If Shildt gets the job then Flaherty will move on...Nevin would bring some attitude but he would probably not last long with AJ and Shildt is / was AJ's guy in the clubhouse and he is a no nonsense guy that isn't going to put up with "Dig Me" attitudes. This team needs somebody who will hold the players accountable for their lack of urgency, focus and effort...Melvin is a good manager BUT too laid back when it comes to holding players accountable.

I think he got up from bed and instead of going to the bathroom...he went out the back door. 😉

It does look as if Melvin is going to go, sounds like he will be happier in SF. I think Shildt takes over.

This could be Prellers 4th manager in 10 years, has had big money to work with, and only two full seasons that have led to playoff births.

If Melvin departs, SF makes the playoffs, SD does not make the playoffs with Prellers "guy", this will mark the end of the Preller era.

This!

Won't matter who's in the dugout next. 2024 will be a wasted year, Preller will hopefully finally get fired, and whoever Seidler brings in for 2025 will most likely want his own guy in the dugout so 2024 manager is a lame duck.

About 2 years too late to get rid of AJ. Bad leadership from the top.

I'm pretty sure they granted "San Francisco" permission to speak to him....not Melvin permission to seek out another job.

IMO there's a big difference.

He may still go though so result could be the same
