Who will replace Melvin next year ?
Quote from brent wolff on November 25, 2023, 11:17 amQuote from fenn68 on November 21, 2023, 3:35 pmSeems as though Shildt has a great relationship with Tatis … heard he worked extensively with him in his return from the injuries / surgeries / suspension and he did give great praise to Tatis today … that relationship can only be good for the future.
Most say he is a “players’ manager” (good relationships) and is supposedly great handing the bullpen (not sure how that meshes with Niebla who also is good with the pen).
The intro meeting is alway optimistic … so take that for what it is worth. Pretty sure the first time he has been perceived as making a bad move some of the fans will be all over him as being incompetent … just part of the game.
Besides Niebla as the pitching coach, who else will make up the staff? Does Flaherty stay as bench coach or hitting coach? Could Nevin become the new 3rd base coach? Does Macias stay as 1B coach? Does Benji Gil join the staff. if so, at which spot? Would Gonzo consider a hitting coach position? What is everyone's thoughts? Go Pads!

Think, at this point, only Christianson, Williams, and Price left with Melvin ... the rest may still be under contract. Shildt clearly knows them all and suspect he would retain them as a base and given all the managerial slots are filled (and they are already adding their coaches) maybe not a lot of opportunities for the current guys to find new jobs.
Shildt may shuffle them around a bit ... Shildt also knows the managers / coaches in the Padres minors and some ex-Padres working in the front office ... would not be surprised one (or more) end up on the ML staff keeping with the theme of continuity in the system. (side: what happened to Wellman who was the manager in EP before they announce the front office guy as the manager for 2024? He was highly regarded by the Padres at one point (about 60 with a ton of managerial experience).
Shildt has been around a long time in the StL organization and has a lot of contacts around baseball ... might be a hiring from is past he is confident in and comfortable with.
Of the names you mentioned, I could see Gil added as maybe 3B or bench coach ... obviously highly regarded as a baseball man ... I guess unemployed at this point ... with the secondary value of reportedly have a great ability to deal with Latin players along with being a major presence in Mexican / Caribbean baseball.
Would expect Shildt / Preller to sort out the coaching staff next week.

Sounds like Flaherty is gone.
Ryan Flaherty is expected to be named Cubs bench coach, sources tell The Athletic. Flaherty was a finalist for the Padres managerial job that went to Mike Shildt. Had previously served as Padres bench coach. Now will hold the same role in Chicago under Craig Counsell.

Clears the deck for Shildt to pick his own staff and probably opens some more doors in the future for Flaherty.
