Trent Grisham
Quote from Henry Silvestre on June 24, 2022, 10:17 pmQuote from MrPadre19 on June 24, 2022, 6:55 pmWe have the 3rd most wins in all of MLB without our best player and with our 2nd best player (potential MVP) currently on the shelf “with” Grisham in CF and guys like Azocar and Mazara getting regular playing time.
I say keep Grish in CF and improve the corners and BP and get Tatis/Machado back and this team is a WS favorite.
Yup.. I'd still like to get a bat like Mancini if nothing else...

Quote from fenn68 on July 5, 2022, 2:19 pmSort of the point where moving on from Grisham seems to be the correct move ... he is riding on his rep as a "gold glove" CF and saved by lack of credible alternatives ... so far. But a sub-200 bat is just not good on a team without others who can hit and carry him.
First, although I have a lot of skepticism with defensive metics I will use them to advance my bias. In 2022, Grisham has a -0.4 dWAR (36th of the top 40 CF in innings) ... -1.0 UZR/150 (24th) ... 2 DRS (18th). Basically what we have is a middle of he pack CF defensively who is not hitting (and 2021 was not good either). Have to start looking elsewhere.
However, don't see CF on the trade market right now (can always speculate on Reynolds, Mullins, Hays but no indication that they can be had for a fair price).
In house ... could be time to promote Ruiz (option Azocar) who has a chance to boost a sagging offense while not being worse in CF. Would they gamble with taking a plus LF in Profar and give him the shot in CF when Myers returns ... Myers offense should be better than Grisham. Time to roll out Abrams in CF but maybe not the offensive upgrade yet they seek.
Then the elephant in the house ... Tatis in CF when he returns ... better offense with Kim/Abrams in the line-up and Grisham out. No a fan of Tatis in CF but maybe the gamble they take for the offense upgrade.
Small sample size risk but in 2021 Tatis played 56 innings in CF and his UZR/150 was 111 out of 122 CF with 50+ innings ... MAYBE with more exposure that improves. However, he also played 151 innings in RF and actually did statistically well with a +1.8 UZR/150 (28 out of 71) and that was better than Myers (-5.7) or Mazara (-5.9). Now there is more to playing the OF than UZR/150 range rating but at least some encouragement that his defense may be passible enough to support his bat in the line-up. (side: I am also getting very comfortable with Kim's plus defense at SS and Kim is hitting better than Grisham)

Ruiz needs to be added tobthe 40.. but yeah Grishman is just an empty spot in our lineup...its awful... today He failed to get runners in.. then Mazara on 1st 1 out and they shift on him with no one on the left side except 3B at SS... and with his ability to bunt easy single ...1st and 2nd 1 out.. BUT NO he just strikes out... and now Grishman lets a ball go over his head...awful

All three members of the Brewer nightmare play in the 2019 playoffs are now members of the Padres -- Hader pitched to Soto who hit it to Grisham who let it get past him in RF.
Grisham was soon banished from the BrewCrew.

Quote from fenn68 on May 17, 2023, 5:19 pmIs it time to move on from Grisham … has his offense been bad enough to discount the value of the defense … on a team that needs any offense?
Sinking average this year after a sub-200 2022 and a fade end to 2021 makes him what he is … a liability on offense.
Is it possible that a combo of Azocar / Dahl could provide more offense without embarrassing themselves defensively in CF? Doubt they find any useful CF at this point of the season in a trade.
If Grisham is out of the picture … and good CF are not easy to find … would the Padres go with Tatis in CF (the previous idea) and focus on adding a corner OF which should be easier to find than a CF. Azocar / Dahl would still be in the mix but Carpenter or Odor could go to a corner and provide more (marginally) offense than Grisham. Even some of the EP players might provide more offense than Grisham and could handle RF.
Nothing great but even a small incremental improvement offensively will help the club.

Liberato> Grish
Kohlwey >Grish
Dahl >Grish
Azocar > Grish
Rivas >Grish
Lopes > Grish
Point being .. Tatis can slide over to CF (or stay in RF) depending who is in CF.. Azocar brings speed, and spark (no pop) to a lineup with lots of pop..so it compliments it in that way..ditto Kohlwey.. Dahl is a solid Bench guy that can get some regular RF ABs if Tatis plays some or mainly CF..
Grish can always be a defensive sub often and late .. or has AAA options yet..
Rivas at 1B/Jake 2B Kim 3B with Manny on IL would be better than Odor anywhere .. we need a spark or 10..

Quote from Jeremy Hill on May 17, 2023, 7:46 pmLiberato is a 27 year old with 5 MLB ABs to his name. Kohlwey is 28 with 0 and off to a slow start in AAA. Dahl's last good season was 2019. Azocar has a .555 OPS this year. Rivas has a .653 OPS in his career at the big league level and I don't think he's a real option in the outfield. Lopes isn't much better at .663. Azocar is the only one that comes close to Grisham with the glove. I'm not opposed to trying something new, but let's be honest about the options. They're a bunch of AAAA types who haven't done anything at the major league level. It's sad to say with Grisham looking awful at the plate again, but I'm not confident in any of them as upgrades.

I 💯 guarantee you every single one of them given 3 ABs today with the bases loaded would have made contact.. at least 1 time and since all 3 times there were less than 2 outs we would have tied or gone ahead.. I think he only fouled ONE ball.. I dont care if they hit .400 OPS.. I just need them to hit the ball with RISP even if it's an out.. put the fkng ball in play.. ground into 3 DPs ..would have won the game 5-4.. instead 3 K's .. left 9 on base..and batting Grish Nola back to back is terrible ..they have to be split up.. Grish /Kim/Nola.. or even Grish/Kim/Odor/ Nola ..can't have wifi gate back to back

Quote from WindsorUK on May 18, 2023, 2:45 amTrent is definitely an asset in the field, and on the base paths. Just such a shame he can't actually get on!
Cut Engel, Trent gets his spot as late D replacement/speed on the bases. Azocar gets the CF spot when healthy, until then, put Dahl there.
