Trades June/July/Deadline
Quote from WindsorUK on July 31, 2022, 7:21 amWhy would you think Gallo is better fielder than Grisham in CF? Joey has a grand total of 49 starts in CF?
And better speed? They have the same number of steals- with Grisham playing in less than half of the number of games as Gallo. And Trent scores more often when he's on base than does Joey. I know neither stat is exclusive to one being faster than the other but those are good metrics to see how well a guy moves around the bases.
On base percentage? Joey career .328, Trent .321
Gallo certainly has more power but also strikes out a whopping 37% of the time!
If the Yankees wish to cut him, sure, have Preller take a flyer on him, put him in AAA, see if he can find his old 40HR form, then maybe bring him up. Otherwise, AJ should not spend a thing on this guy. Better players to be had. Save trade chips for them.

Look at Grish defensive metrics 2022 edition..awful .. Gallo 49 games in CF are > way better than those #s...also Gallo is coming off 2 straight Gold Gloves in RF..where as our CF GG season was a while back....I'd take my chances with Gallo getting HOT..vs Grisham's "new normal"
BTW NYY has to basically pay for all of Gallos $$ and not get more than some coins for the batting cages in return

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2022, 7:50 amYeh, Gallo in CF is all projection as is Gallo in / Grisham out.
First, Grisham over the past month+ has just been a poor defensive CF … so throw out all the Gold Glove reference from 2020. Gallo has not played much CF in his career but was Gold Glove in RF and has some speed. So, a gamble Gallo can handle CF but that gets pushed against that … right now … Grisham is not. Would it be worse? Can alway go back to Grisham if it is.
Second, offensively Grisham is doing little with a sub .200 BA and a mediocre SLG. Gallo is a worse BA but does present SLG (and more K). So, not sure what Grisham provides offensively now … not optimistic on Gallo but again maybe not worse with some upside I guess.
More of an indictment of Grisham than an endorsement of Gallo … plus the pure lack of a proven CF internal option.
Plus … if a low cost … maybe Gallo is just a part time option (DH?) upgrade vs certain opponents. Not sure who all would be optioned with Myers - Tatis - then Gallo added. Ruiz - Batten - Abrams? That does not even count another trade.

Way I look at it pretty much...Ruiz needs regular playing time and shouldn't be on the bench during a postseason push..so at worst Gallo upgrades Ruiz(back to AAA).. Myers bad knee looks done in the OF...if we are lucky enough to get Soto..Mazara would go down/be part of another move or be DFA'd..lack of position versatility (CF) and Huge incoming talent Soto makes Mazara expendable. But if enough mlb roster pieces move perhaps a lefty bat off the bench/4th/5th OF Mazara could be.. The difference of Gallo PH/DH/CF is SLG...our weakness as a club is his greatest strength as a hitter.. so he fits a need/and at least upgrades the Bench for 2022

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 31, 2022, 8:34 amGrisham's defensive decline is overblown. He's fallen off a bit, but it's getting hyped up because he's had a few glaringly bad plays. His jumps are still really good and he goes back on balls as well as anyone. He made a couple of really bad decisions to go for balls that got past him which makes balls like the double that he just missed the diving catch on the other day look bad when they really weren't. I'm not that worried about his defense.
The offensive decline is far more concerning. His sub Mendoza level line of production just isn't going to cut it.

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2022, 9:06 amThis is a bit depressing but the LAD actually are heading into a great position to sign one or more of Soto, Otani, or Judge long term.
Maybe a factor in a strong push to trade for Soto now and do a Betts and sign him long term before he hits FA.
in 2022 well over the CBT BUT and incredible amount of salaries can (and will) come off by FA / club options declined putting the well under the CBT threshold. More than enough room to add Soto and still stay under. Then after 2023 another large drop in salaries maybe making enough room to add Otani and still stay under. LA loves star power and an Otani - Soto - Betts would do that … plus they have quality prospects to be the low cost fill-ins. One loose end is Trea Turner who goes FA after the season … not sure the priority of signing him long term at age 30.

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2022, 9:16 amOK, this is a head scratcher for me:
10:57AM: The Rays may not be too deep in the Gallo hunt, as Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News hears that the “Yankees wanted too much back” in return.
NYY would be lucky to get someone to take Gallo and give them anything while NYY eating his salary ... yet they are "wanting too much back" ... does not equate unless part of a smokescreen engineered by the NYY to get someone to make a better offer (or an offer) for Gallo?

Quote from 3fingersplit on July 31, 2022, 9:19 amYou guys crack me up...trade the whole farm for mythical trades that aren't going to happen....I'm still trying to figure out who "Grishman" is...
AJ Preller is in a tough spot...if he doesn't land Soto or Ohtani...the world is over and if he does land either one then what is the short view versus the long view of this team moving forward....Peter Siedler didn't get to where he is by being stupid and if he feels the ROI is worth the cost....almost everybody on the roster and then some...maybe a deal gets done but even then this team still has to perform on the field and this team has so many holes that a Soto or Ohtani won't overcome that.....there are so many variables involved that AJ probably isn't sleeping well lately.
Regarding Tatis.....Expectations will kill you and anybody that knows anything about that injury / surgery aren't expecting some sort of prodigal son returns story.....IF Tatis can come back and help this team it would be a bonus but people need to tamp down the expectations both playing in the field and at the plate.
BTW....I hate these City Connect jerseys...they look like something you would see in a Ice Cream shop down at Seaport Village or a box of Jordan Almonds.

Is 265/345/600 20 HR in 50 games 20 SB too much to expect from Tatis??? El Nino is going to struggle a bit..per my BA/OBP numbers... but he is going to SLG like a "The eye of the Storm'
Count me in on the Soto,Soto and Gallo law firm.. the 1st Soto is obviously the most important (Tugers closer) 😆

Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2022, 9:59 amAgree that Preller and Siedler have a major dilemma at the deadline:
- make no moves and (in my view) fallout of the playoffs beaten out by STL and PHIL ... adding Myers now and Tatis whenever will not do it ... Pomeranz / Johnson may not be effective at all after long layoffs if they come back in late August. Save the prospect but history shows few of them will be productive ML players (just don't know which ones and when)
- clear out the farm to get one super star MIGHT get them into the playoffs but probably not far in the playoffs while setting up a dramatic fall in about 2 years with no internal reinforcements at low cost to fund the super stars
- avoid the mega deal of elite prospects for the one super star and opt for deals for rentals (who will not require those top prospects) but may be as productive in 2022 as the super star (who no guarantee to be all that productive in 2022) ... especially (as I do) the 2022 may be the best shot to go deep into the payoffs before a fall off in 2023 and a plummet in 2024. Then regroup in the off-season.
I can't see Siedler ... after committing all this money ... sitting back with the prospects to "wait until next year" ... too close. However, the best strategy to win now?????????? and be competitive in the future ?????????? However, I don't think it is sell the farm one super star to end up like the LAA with Trout, Otani, and Rendon and being non-competitive or preserve the entire farm and most fail and be non-competitive as they have in the past.
--------
Agree on the City Connect uni ... where they Miami rejects that someone conned SD to adopt as their own? Where is Don Johnson? Do they make Manny and Hos happy and Miami guys?
