I would guess that the LAA minimum for Otani is similar to the minimum for Soto … yes, Soto has one more year but Otani has the mega PR/marketing angle attached (think money for the team) and provides both elite pitching and hitting.

However, neither team has to sell now if they don’t like the offer (their choice) … really puts potential buyers in bind.

As appealing as having super stars is … it does take a team to be the winner.

Way I see it both Soto and Otani are relatively young..Soto more so

And 1/3 of the roster is made of 1st 3 yr players..Baez/Morejon/Wilson/Gore/Wethers/Batten/Ruiz/Knehr/Castillo

That leaves 13 spots .. and roughly $100mil .. we can 💯 field a perennial winning team

We will also have guys like Lesko/Snelling/Susana and others coming up towards end of 25/ beginning of 26 to give us 1 or 2 cheap controllable SP.. and potential superstar Wood/Merrill/Acosta types and C galore..to keep feeding the 8-9 spots of 3 or less yr players (minimum $$)

Just using our current offseason expected departures and assuming only the players above remain... resign Martinez + Profar + Clev (short term 1 +1/2+1 type deal).. Kim is back $7mil + arb Voit + arb Crone... cut bait with lamet ..bring in a Yu $20mil SP.. ... Suarez opts in $6mil ..That would still leave us $26mil roughly for the final 4 players ...

And we just keep cycling thru.. eventually Kim gets dealt and replaced by a Batten type saving us $6,5... Voit moves on and a power youthful bat Doershing replaces him..and so far so on.. Machado has what 6yrs left? And what if he opts out..But we extend Soto and Tatis ?.. we still have 2 24-25 yr old locked and loaded for a decade... if Rays and Baltimore can do 26 with 80-100mil payrolls or less ..we can do 22 for the same...

Boras’ Padre clients are Hosmer, Gore, Manaea, Profar, and Snell … maybe working an extension for one of them? Or just review Gore’s health status?

Of course, could be discussing a long term deal (if given permission by WASH/MLB) to discuss the extension demands for either Soto or Bell …think both are his clients. Padres would offer more/better prospect package if they had the add locked long term .. I guess.

One “under the radar” move may be negotiations on Michael Conforto … a FA no longer encumbered by a COMP PICK.

IF healthy, the guy can hit and play decent OF. Padres could get him for “just money” … saving prospects for themselves or other trade needs.

Conforto would fill a 2023 hole in the OF … corner OF since CF is far in his past. Or DH if they move on from Voit. If that happens (or is the discussion) … might signal Soto talks have stalled or the demand has gone beyond what the Padres can (or will) match.

We have been suggesting WASH will drag this out until Tues but always two in the negotiation … and maybe Preller had his own deadline and if no  deal … time to move on to other targets. As I said before getting nothing by waiting (and losing) the Soto derby would be a disaster for the Padres and may cost them the playoffs.
