I don't think Soto alone gets us past the level of the Dodgers or some of the other contenders. If we give up the prospect haul it will take to get him I think it means we are going all in on winning a ring while we have him and Seidler is willing to write the check to support that. I would expect a bunch of moves towards that end.
Baez to the 26 and will be activated today..
I dont know about just Soto.. but Soto + Tatis + Baez + Pomz+ Johnson + Suarez + Myers and Beatty (played AAA last night).. should get us closer to LAD
Should think of the adds as not chasing the LAD during the season … just securing the playoffs. Then in the playoffs it is a different game and the match-up with the LAD is just a seven game series … since making the playoffs may not be the biggest hurdle with any of the potential upgrades … the question may be what helps the Padres in a 7 game set vs LAD (then NYY/Houston).

I think the match up is 5 not seven (better odds) would be 7 for the NLCS vs Mets/Braves/other
But yeah Mus/Othani/Yu /Mus/Othani...I'd take my chances...even Snell (career 2.05 ERA vs LAD. Absolutely OWNS them) in for Othani..and Clev/Manea/NMart in the BP + the reinforcements coming back.. i like our chances.. against anyone with a Soto + Tatis lineup

Yes on the 15 day IL.
Note that Dennis Lin is reporting that the team is optimistic about Gore’s injury but looks to shut him down for the season (and the Fall instructs). He had already pitched more innings than in 2021.
Hard to tell the real severity of the injury but clearly bad enough for a lengthy shutdown even if no surgery. A candidate for the 60 day IL (along with Stammen) to make room for the players coming off the 60 day IL.

So either someone goes down for Baez or a trade is imminent.

Trade …maybe … just not sure who would be moved independently unless it is a RP as part of a multi-player deal. Also not sure that Baez has done well enough to clearly bump one of the current RP.
Yesterday was off … so no RP should be overworked at the moment. Have not heard of a RP having an injury (even minor) but maybe?
If a trade that does not really take away from the Padres pen … might be either Wilson or Lamet (who would also represent a CBT help). Everyone wants RP help. If Lamet just get someone to take the entire contract and settle for some filler return pieces. IF Wilson, might get a “rental” add if independently moved or a good add in a more complicated deal.
Hope for a deal (my mental health is the primary return) and hope it is Lamet to clear CBT space for the “next move”.

Postseason Roster Rules & Eligibility
Definition
In a typical season, any player who is on the 40-man roster or 60-day injured list as of 11:59 p.m. ET on Aug. 31 is eligible for the postseason.
Those on the restricted list at that point are also eligible if they haven't been suspended for performance-enhancing drugs during that season. (All players who have served a suspension for PEDs in a given season are ineligible for postseason play that year.)
A player who doesn't meet said criteria for postseason eligibility can still be added to a team's roster in the postseason via petition to the Commissioner's Office if the player was in the organization on Aug. 31 and is replacing someone who is on the injured list and has served the minimum amount of time required for activation. (For example, a player on the 10-day injured list who has been on it for at least 10 days, or a player who has been on the 60-day injured list for at least 60 days.) Players who are acquired in September or after are ineligible.
Postseason roster rules
Teams submit a 26-man roster (it was 25, prior to 2020) prior to each round of the postseason comprised of postseason-eligible players. A club may request permission from the Commissioner's Office to replace a player who is injured during the course of a series, but that player is then ineligible for the rest of that round and the subsequent round, if there is one. A pitcher may be replaced only by another pitcher, and a position player only by another position player.
Teams carry extra players throughout the postseason in the event of injuries, and those players, as well as players on the injured list, can be in the dugout during games, within reason
