Trades June/July/Deadline
Quote from fenn68 on July 27, 2022, 10:18 amDoing a “straw dog” for Murphy (assume the Soto trade as proposed):
Padres get Murphy.
A’s get:
Nola … league minimum with 3 years control as a bridge to their top C prospects
Gore or Morejon (whoever is left after the Soto deal)
Rosario
Knehr
Murphy is an elite defensive catcher (gold glove) and a Top 5 offensive catcher at league minimum with 3 more years of control … that will cost. OAK does not want to take on and contracts.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 27, 2022, 10:19 amQuote from fenn68 on July 27, 2022, 10:13 amWith WASH taking the position that they don’t need to attach Corbin to the deal and want 4-5 quality prospects but do not need to deal NOW and could easily wait until the winter when more teams may be motivated to play, here is a “straw dog” proposal:
Padres get Soto.
Nats get:
1. Part 1 (AAV offset to help the Padres)
Myers (being a FA after the season … no long term payroll drag on WASH)
Lamet (some upside with control and a good chance they could flip him in 2023)
2. Part 2 (the propsects)
Abrams (top 10 in MLB type)
Gore or Morejon (WASH choice)
Campusano (Top 100, value position)
Weathers (still has upside, young)
3. Part 3 (prospects longer shots, lower level)(could mix and match a lot here)
Rosier (non-roster OF on the rise)
Vela (non-roster SP on the rise)
2 1/2 years of Soto … 2 1/2 years of playoff hunts (most critical in 2022-23) … could be flipped in 2023-24 if team not contending (and don’t plan to resign him) and recoup a couple of quality prospects.
Who goes to A's for Murphy (3 yrs)
Hassell or Merrill...their choice
Knerr or Wilson their choice
Acosta + Ornelas
+ Nola?
Too much? About right?
Pads top 5 after
1- Hassell or Merrill (2)
2- Wood
3 Lesko
4- Rosario
5- Knehr
6- Snelling
Still a decent top 5...and Ruiz in SD

Quote from fenn68 on July 27, 2022, 10:30 amFollowing my “straw dogs” .. Hassell, Wood, and Merrill are left out of full season ball BUT potentially to create more AAV room to cover ARB increase for Soto, Murphy, and Cronenworth plus re-signing some SP they still would want to move Hosmer (plus other reasons) they will need to attach Hassell to Hosmer (no idea on the return but not great). Then pay something less for a Hosmer replacement.
So my main prospects left currently in full season would be Merrill and Wood … probably targeted for a 2025 arrival to cover Soto FA and whatever happened post Profar, 1B/DH situation. Ruiz does take of CF.
The upper levels of they system would be really really thin in prospect for the next couple of years.

To be honest, we can go full rebuild IF SD wins a WS, and I would not care that much.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 27, 2022, 11:56 amQuote from BoosterSD on July 26, 2022, 10:39 amSo right now, we have basically 2 SP that we can "count on" in Musgrove and Darvish. One SP that is going to be on an innings limit in Clevinger. And 2 SP that are good, but have been up and down in performance in Snell and Manaea. Manaea and Snell really need to pull their heads out!!
I really think a back end innings eater at a 4-5 ERA guy is going to be needed. Someone who can keep us in a game, and hope the offense gets it together. Davies is a good option still IMO.
Our issues right now are offense...offense...bullpen...offense....and bullpen.
Yes we can always use more pitching and if we trade a guy(Gore/Weathers/Snell) we would want others for next year and beyond, but i think AJ is all about winning a WS "this year".
Darvish/Musgrove/Clev in the Playoffs will play.
We need offense to compete with other playoff teams and their excellent pitching.
Bottom line...I don't see AJ trading for Starting pitching unless it's "after" he adds Soto,Bell,or someone else with some Pop.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 27, 2022, 11:58 amCount me out on a deal for Adell.
He is a great AAAA player....we already have those in spades.

Quote from fenn68 on July 27, 2022, 12:37 pmUnder the theme “you always don’t get what you pay for” … look at the 2022 WAR numbers for some of the elite, can’t miss, big money FA from last winter:
As reference, Profar is at 2.2 WAR
3.0 … Seager
2.0 … Seiman
1.9 … Story
1.6 … Schwarber
0.8 … Baez
-0.5 … Ozuna
-1.4 … Castellanos
Wow! That is big money for under performance. Think a few owners are questioning their GM and front offices? Go back a bit and add Rendon to that bad FA list.
So, a cautionary tale in going “all in” on FA OR acquiring players via trade. In trades, most prospects don’t achieve their ceilings but a good number of those veterans added end up under performing.
Not easy being a GM.

Yeah, no thanks.
Give me Zach Davies instead.
