Trades June/July/Deadline
Quote from fenn68 on June 28, 2022, 12:29 pmSide thought on Lopez and his "value" going forward (assuming he is not a flash in the pan). Two years control at a low salary coupled with Pomeranz returning (if healthy) ... would allow the Padres to pass on trying to re-sign Rogers (probably on a multi-year / $10MM+ AAV) freeing up money to focus on re-signing Musgrove, Manaea, Clevinger, and probably Profar ... plus any other FA.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on June 28, 2022, 12:46 pmI still like the idea of Gallo for Lamet...
Change of scene for both . Gallo can be a lhb for the DH spot.. play a little RF/LF . If he finds his groove (like Alfaro has) you play him mote. He gives us SLG% and up until his trade to NYY a solid OBP... Perhaps a return to a more laid back city will unlock his .800+ OPS capabilities and provide us with some more needed pop... AJP loves his former Rangers and Profar/Mazara and Martinez have all had a successful season so far in SD... make it a 4th Ranger and let's Go!

I have discussed the idea of Gallo in the past. I think Lamet for Gallo is a start. Although, I think SD would need/want to add another piece so the money would offset, as Gallo is about twice the salary as Lamet. Or include a very decent prospect for some money coming back from NYY.
Although if SD was to get Gallo, it is not for part time DH duty. Defensively, he would be the 2nd best OFer on the team, and I would imagine that he would start every day in RF.
And then you could look at splitting ABs between 1B and DH between Myers, Hosmer, and Voit. Going with the best matchup or the hot bat.

Would you do Lopez for Morejon and Baez? Or too much from SD?

Too much for a RP with a 3 month track record. I could see including Baez in a deal but would be very reluctant to move Morejon in any deal (upside is still too high). Back of my head the Padres will really need him … maybe still in 2022 but clearly in 2023 with all the FA pitching coming off the roster.

Not sure what the NYY would want but probably not Lamet since they have the 2nd best bullpen ERA in MLB (3rd best WAR). NYY are the best team in MLB … can hit and can pitch so can be very selective in changing their roster.
Probably would be fine in unloading Gallo … real ugly stats with NYY last year and this plus relegated to the bench for the most part. Not sure who they have in the minors for a replacement for Gallo, but given his performance would not take much to upgrade the bench role. If the Padres gave a good prospect …NYY may eat the rest of Gallo’s 2022 salary. Probably could get him for someone like Ferguson in the lower minors.

However, if I am the Padres, I want to deal for a hitter who is “hot” and can step in and produce and not gamble on maybe rebound in the last two months of the season. Gallo is more of a gamble as a off-season signing (and if Preller goes that route … Gallo should be cheaper than most).
Then, if Tatis bumps Alcantara and Myers bumps Abrams, does Gallo bump Azocar or Mazara?
I guess he could be a fall back move … but I would first pursue a better current performer … eg Reynolds, Mullins, Hays with life after 2022.

Quote from fenn68 on June 28, 2022, 1:48 pmFrom the Padres as a seller side … seems to be growing buzz about interest in dealing Snell … the front office frustration is growing not only with performance but approach to the game.
This could be a case of a deletion opening payroll space for a separate deal or could be a piece of a 3-way deal (Preller special). Padres would still be left with Musgrove, Manaea, Darvish, Clevinger, Gore, Martinez … and maybe Morejon for starting roles. Plus with arms coming off the IL … some low hanging fruit has to be pruned.
Given how Snell has performed … maybe not much of a gamble of shorting the SP as he is beginning to slide to #7 option.
Oddly the Padres are too good with a legit shot at going into the playoffs to “nurse” an underperforming pitcher.
I suggested before TOR as a trade partner … deep in contention for a playoff slot and just lost another SP for a couple of months after losing Ryu for the season to TJ. They have the money. They have some decent prospects (would not try to get a ML player from a contender).

He has done well in the AL East, and they are familiar with him in TOR.
Trading him this season, would save SD about $4M± this season, which you could put towards an OFer. And then save SD over $16.5M next season, which could be allocated towards Musgrove and maybe Manaea (although not totally sold on him) based on what he thinks he wants in FA contract.
Could be a good move, as long as everyone else in the SP staff stays healthy. Although, Snell was one of the SPs that was hurt last season, so can you really count on him staying healthy in the 2nd half anyway???

That would work for me if TOR took Snell’s entire contract.
