I hope Ruiz stays up for the season.

Can play all OF spots (despite his 1 OF blunder last night)  and is a disrupter on the bases.

If we can roster Mateo during a Playoff run we can roster Ruiz

I LOVE having a guy with game changing speed in the playoffs...even if just as a late inning defensive add and pinch runner.

Despite that blunder as well.

ESPN also got on Ruiz for that diving catch earlier in the game, calling it a little bit of showboating/eye wash. He had to slow down in order to dive.

Yeah I saw that....but sometimes an easy "dive" like that is a better choice than a shoestring catch.

Especially if your good at the diving catch.....which many aren't....and I assume Ruiz is.

I really don't think this rookie was intentionally,in the middle of a difficult play, trying to force a highlight reel play.

No, probably just misjudged it a little bit, and some youthful exuberance. 🙂

Ruiz in the future … yes but in a playoff run in 2022 need a lot more out of CF. The IDEA of Ruiz is great … not convinced experimenting with Ruiz on a team that needs offense is all that great.

Need a legit alternative first … but an alternative is needed.

The fielding aside … and errors due to youthful exuberance should not be dismissed in a playoff push … still have to consider his minimal performace.

First three games in COLO … good going 4 for 12 with a double and triple. Then “reality” sets in and since 2 for 11, no extra base hits, no stolen bases / one caught stealing. He is not helping to win game at this point.

Even if they don’t add Happ or Benintendi to bridge some CF coverage … and as much as I don’t like this .. Tatis to the OF and keep Kim/Abrams at SS would be better.

I'm not lobbying to start Ruiz in CF every day...maybe not at all.

But occasionally in a Corner or off the bench late or pinch running.

Especially this year with the horrible "man on 2nd" extra inning rule.

Imagine the 10th inning in a tie game with the dodger sin the Playoffs and Voit makes the last out and starts on 2b.

Pinch run Ruiz all day long.....

Yes I know that's a fringe need....but it won't only be these occasions we could use his defense/baserunning

Plus I think he's gonna hit

I am sort on the line on how hard to push for a big move and the value of a small move.

To start … I think the Padres are in a very good position to make the playoffs with the CURRENT roster plus the IL returnees. They are in the second slot and STL, SF, PHIL all have their own shortcomings, so don’t overestimate them. However, if in the playoffs, still need upgrades to actually compete in the playoffs.

Sure a wish list is adding every upgrade possible … but that is just not realistic.

The small moves are “nice” but have the chance of being the 2022 Adam Frazier and be worthless. So, that would be back burner if at all. Keeping in mind that would bump from the current roster and cost money / prospects. Low value.

Sends me to a BIG move (or two) or stand pat to the ire of the fans. Team is too good just to nibble on the edges.

Bogaerts has a 20m AAV. Most reports seem to have us either just under or just over the 230m threshold. Hosmer has the highest AAV of guys we might like to move at 18m. If we're trying to stay under 230m adding Bogaerts would require dumping multiple players.

Kim has been great against LHP. Abrams has been much better against RHP since coming back up. Bogaerts would be an upgrade, but it might not be as significant as we may think and would likely not be the same level of upgrade we could find committing the same level of resources elsewhere. We would also somewhat be handcuffing ourselves to the idea of Tatis in the outfield. I think he can handle it, but it would put a lot of pressure on him making a smooth transition.

If we're going to add that kind of salary for the year I would rather see it go towards something like Contreras and Bell. That would be a much cleaner fit and bigger upgrade. Unless Seidler decides to go full Cohen and or we open up a MI spot in a salary dumping move I think there will be much better ways to use our resources than on a SS no matter how good he is.

With any of these deals .. the prospect package given can be structured so the selling team also sends money to minimize the CBT effect.

My issue with either Bell or Contreras does nothing to address the bigger OF needs … one of Hosmer or Voit is out (not all that bad) but if part of the logic is Tatis at SS then Kim/Abrams benched and the Padres are still left with Grisham / Ruiz in CF and Mazara / Myers (if still around) in RF. Not all that comfortable with that OF mix … especially if an injury hits.

The “cleaner” move(s) would be Happ or Benintendi who are currently hitting and can cover all the OF and DH depending on need / injuries. Still would allow some flexibility around Tatis and easing him into his return at SS with Kim backing and Tatis at DH/OF.

Are Bell or Contreras that much better RIGHT NOW than Happ or Benintendi?

As good as Kim has been against LHP, Bogaerts is that much better.

Kim in 2022 v LHP-.308/.402/.464 with an OPS of .884

Bogaerts in 2022 v. LHP-.384/.477/.548 with an ops of 1.025.....huge. Not to mention what Bogaerts is doing v. RHP which is .100 points across the board better than Kim, and there will not be that much difference in D between the two, if any.

Plus, you could include Kim in the players going back for the salary relief. Snell, Kim, and Voit CBT numbers are more than Bogaerts. All 3 have control for 2023 (2024 for Kim) so that helps BOS from having to go full rebuild, which would appease the fans to some point.

SD would then have the season balance of about $2M for another add, not to mention that Tatis would upgrade the OF bat wise, and even the guys on ESPN last night, said that Tatis could easily handle, in season, the switch to LF or even CF. So get Bogaerts, and SD line up would look something like this,

  1. Profar - CF, 2. Crone-2B, 3. Machado - 3B, 4. Bogaerts - SS, 5. Tatis - LF, 6. Mazara - RF, 7. Myers - DH/1B, 8. Hosmer - 1B, Alfaro/Nola - C.

Bell, yes! He is still hitting .294 for the last 28 days, and .314 over the last 14 days. And even his last 7 days, with a .100 BA, is still getting on base at a .300 clip.

Boston would have to pay most of his contract or take Myers or Hosmer for Bogaerts to be in play IMO.

I don't think Benintendi gives us what we need.....Slugging...although I like him.

Bell is a good choice but as a 1B/DH gives us different issues unless AJ is able to move Hoz or Voit.

Happ is a good choice because of his versatility but again...not a big Slugging guy.But getting him for next year too at a good Arb price is intriguing.

I'm not a big fan of the Contreras idea.

Unless it's a deal for both he and Happ AND it doesn't take two top prospects.......maybe.
