Adding a SP will cost prospects that may be needed to land bats to help the offense and just clogs up the roster already set up for difficulties with the arms returning from the IL.
Could Martinez not slot back into the 5th spot, in case something like a Davies of better SP trade doesnt happen?
Sure, but he has not been starting / going long for some time … can he return to that role effectively down the stretch?
However, Preller does like 3 team trades (or coordinated deals) …. So maybe Snell out Davies in with prospects filling in the blanks. Probably not ideal to make one of the deals before securing agreement on the second.
So I just looked at Martinez stats from Japan, and it seems, he never really went past 140 IP, and he is already at 70 this season here in SD.
So maybe its best that he stays in the pen, as he really probably only has about 70-100 innings left for this season.
So yes, a Snell move for CBT would need to be offset for a Davies type move, or some combo of Weathers and/or other MiLs that could rotate based on performance and innings restrictions.

Quote from fenn68 on July 25, 2022, 9:08 amIt is late in a playoff run … trusting the #5 starter to any of the Padre Mil is an extreme gamble and likely setting up a string of losses (and taxing the pen). Every loss is critical in a tight race were one either way can spell in or out.
For me it looks like Snell or a proven upgrade for the stretch and 10-11 more starts.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 25, 2022, 9:22 amPeralta is a poor defensive outfielder and he can't hit lefties. I don't see him as an upgrade on Mazara. Davies reportedly cheated on his now ex-wife and abandoned her and his children.
SS should be just about last on our list of priorities. Bogaetts only makes sense if we trade Abrams or Kim in a move for an outfielder and Seidler just decides to go for it.

Reports on Peralta defense is different that what you claim, so who knows.
And I dont see Peralta as a replacement of Mazara, but more as an add for RHP, with maybe Profar in CF, Peralta in LF, and Mazara in RF against RHSPs.
Bogarts only makes sense if you see Tatis in LF, Profar in CF, and Mazara/Myers in RF based on starting pitchers.
And yes, I see Tatis in LF if he moves to the grass, since it should be the easiest transition IMO to the OF because of the ball moving the same as it would as if he was at SS.
And I still think the moving of Kim could be a nice way to move $7M off the CBT number, and get a decent return.

The priority is a bat ... and the best bat for the best price ... so Bogarts should be in play.
Abrams who may have a future ... is not there yet and could (should) be back in AAA. Kim ... plus D and hits LHP becomes a spot player maybe bumping Voit vs LHP ... maybe to 2B if Croney to 1B in Hosmer is the one bumped.
The more speculation I hear ... Tatis will get a lot of DH/OF time as he is eased back into the line-up ... likely causing Grisham / Mazara losing playing time and Voit / Hosmer losing playing time.
Simply Tatis, Bogarts, and even Myers in the line-up at the expense of Abrams, Batten, Ruiz back to AAA and loss of playing time for Kim, Voit, Hosmer, Mazara is a good thing for a playoff run.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 25, 2022, 10:33 amI hope Ruiz stays up for the season.
Can play all OF spots (despite his 1 OF blunder last night) and is a disrupter on the bases.
If we can roster Mateo during a Playoff run we can roster Ruiz
I LOVE having a guy with game changing speed in the playoffs...even if just as a late inning defensive add and pinch runner.

Lamet has been labeled as having one more year of control (2023) BUT looking at Roster Resource he entered the year with 4.130 years and only has ... so far ... added about 30-35 more days ... not enough to cross the 5 year mark. If I understand the calculation correctly, if he would need about 42 days to earn that 5th year ... so he is close. So, if he is not recalled for the rest of the year ... Padres (or another buyer) would get 2 years control? He is 30 and in AAA ... so not sure that is a big selling point given his $4.5MM contract but can always be DFA.
Castillo who is not on the 40 man (but was) actually has 3.121 years of service time (mostly on the ML DL) ... so had (if) the Padres added him and called him up for just over 50 days in 2022 they would effectively lose a year of control. As it is he will only have 3 control years. Maybe part of the reason not to rush him back from injury and to the ML now. Hopefully he becomes that elite late game force ... and 3 years is better than 2 years ... so maybe in the thinking process.
Not 100% sure I got that all right ... but think that is the essence of the rules.

You might look at Castillo's overall numbers and think, "why not bring him up?" Look at the analytics, however. Velocity vs. 2019 down. Spin rate on slider down. He overpowers guys in the minors, but that's not going to fly in MLB. Honestly, the next LRP to follow is Tom Cosgrove. Between SA and FW: 7-1 3.21 1.01WHIP 33.2IP 14BB 53Ks
Just because his velocity and spin rates are down does not automatically mean he would not succeed in the ML ... a question of how much down from what starting point, how that compares to successful ML LHRP, and is he offsetting that with better command.
Just a follow-up on why not to bring Castillo up. Innings pitched (ML&Mil)
2022 ... 29
2021 ... 0
2020 ... 0
2019 ... 17 (also not sure how that creates a baseline for his stuff)
2018 ... 64
I can see why they are slow walking his recovery without heavy use given what he has done in the past 3 seasons due to injury. No real way that they would put him in a heavy workload, high stress playoff position.
Did note that in his ML time in 2018-19 his FB was averaging 95MPH ... anyone know where his current FB is sitting?

Jose Castillo's fastball is sitting 94-95 mph as he makes his way back from Tommy John surgery. The shape and power of his slider is also back to form, perhaps his biggest concern after losing essentially three years to various injuries. Jun 24, 2022

Despite that blunder as well.
ESPN also got on Ruiz for that diving catch earlier in the game, calling it a little bit of showboating/eye wash. He had to slow down in order to dive.
