Guess it was because of a big lead and wanting Martinez if they wanted to go multiple innings with him ... saving a pen arm for the weekend. Might also be the match-ups Melvin saw and Martinez's stuff (lots of breaking balls / off speed) had a better chance than Garcia's power pitches.

Hard to guess the order of adding fresh bodies but looking as though:
- Myers returns for the homestead next Friday ... Batten optioned ... Stammen to 60 day IL
- Trade Deadline transaction ... 26 man add and Ruiz or Abrams down (depending on the position of the add) unless a 26 man player is dealt
- Tatis returns after Aug 2 ... then Abrams (if still around) optioned.
Hard for me to see Abrams or Ruiz dealt for a "rental" or even someone with one more year control ... more likely package of minor leaguers. Think they may be in deals for the likes of Reynolds or Soto with longer control and impact bats.
Still Batten, Abrams, Ruiz make room for Myers, Tatis, and a PTNL ... so not a big issue other than sequencing.
Pitching is a different question with all the arms that could return at or after the deadline and some potential upgrades sitting in AAA.

I think it’s safe to say that Juan Soto isn’t Randy Myers.
Not the player … but “paying extra” to block a player to another team does.
Never ever want to “pay extra”.
But when/if a deal comes for Soto who’s to say if it was the right amount or too much?
It’s gonna be so huge either way.

Or if Soto remains a perennial all-star and the Padres become a .500 team because they neither have the low cost prospects nor the CBT space to add quality around Soto, Tatis, and Machado ... then Soto walks in two years to play for the LAD for $45MM/yr.
Justin Upton ... Matt Kemp .... James Shields ... Derek Norris ... Wil Myers ... Craig Kimbrel ... Andrew Cashner made 2015 a lock for a World Series. Oops!
Soto is great but only one very expensive player as are Machado and Tatis. They may shine but the other 23 have a better chance to thrust the Padres into the dark and a string of losing seasons.

Well things are just getting worse for Boston ... a few days ago the IL Sale ... the just a horrible July ... now
The Red Sox have placed star third baseman Rafael Devers on the 10-day injured list with right hamstring inflammation, per the team. In terms of corresponding moves, outfielder Jaylin Davis was promoted from Triple-A, and Enrique Hernandez was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
We know hamstrings can last a lot longer than 10 days.
IF there was any question about BOST being a buyer or seller ... think SELLER is the answer.
