That also may not be keeping Soto as a potential big money sign but clearly an uncertainty for the new owners.
I do buy into the clean the books of all liabilities and uncertainties for a “clean” sale and maybe a better price since the new owners are in it for at least 10 years. New owners can cleanly install their own philosophy from the get go.
So selling Soto linked to Corbin and take the “lesser” prospect package may be best for the sale (both seller and buyer). Not great for the fans … but who cares.
Pretty much my take which would disqualify us from getting him sans a fat OK from Seidler.
Heard some chattered that they may actually pivot the other way and take on some would be FA guys (aka like Myers) to get more/better specs inbthe return... not attaching Corbin..and Stacking the system.. so who knows.
Would it be not easier for WASH just to pay Soto's 2022 remaining salary rather than get burdened with a body (Myers or anyone else)? Send Soto and the money to the buyer and no impact on the buyer's CBT or payroll and WASH has not CBT issue but ends up with a more robust prospect return.
If the Padres the stay within the CBT threshold AND get the benefit of a RHH Myers for 2 months who may be more useful than Hosmer - Voit - Batten down the stretch and better insurance when Soto pull a hamstring.
Side: did hear additional speculation that WASH will focus on top prospects near ML ready ... not that they would not take some lower level ones but not as the keys to the trade. The though is that the new ownership will want to move to winning sooner than later and waiting 3-4 years for a low level prospect to arrive then another 1-2 years to be fully productive (if they make it) does not fit. Nearer term prospects may be a better selling point.

Whatever works.. at least Myers DHing would allow us to go 1st to 3rd and score on SF vs Voit maybe

Let's speculate big .. Myers (no long term commitment) or Hosmer (LHH to balance Alonso). Maybe get a BIG APPLE in return.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on July 22, 2022, 10:06 amNo matter what happens Soto and Bell will HELP us in our postseason push..
For 1.. they play 3 vs LAD and 3 vs St Louis + 2 vs Miami leading to the deadline.. Nats with Soto/Bell > than without
For 2 we face Nats 7 times in August and they are likely to be without 1 and maybe Both Soto and Bell ..
Slice it as you will both Bell and Soto are helping Padres this run..

Need Pomeranz,Castillo and Suarez next.....and Pierce Johnson.
If these guys are close we could certainly use a couple existing guys in trades.
Where else we gonna put them all?
Which guys currently in our Pen have options?

Of the active roster Crismatt, Wilson, Morejon, and Hill have options plus Gore … everyone else do not (in the pen Rogers, Garcia, Martinez).
Note that Pomeranz, Johnson, and Suarez also do not have options so if activated must go to the active roster and bump someone (both on the 26 and the 40 since all three are on the 60 day). Add Castillo into the mix and a fourth move off both the 26 and 40 man.
Zero indication that any will be off the IL by the trade deadline … that complicates things a bit. Baring new injuries (Or the IL guys don’t recover) … should expect a waiver move in August to move on from some player …
