With other teams interested … and Boras his agent … expect a ML deal from someone.
No idea how teams look at his track record (very successful) vs. the injuries in 2021 and off season. Will some team try to sign him with 2023 and beyond in mind and take 2022 work as a bonus? On the other hand, Boras probably sees him as a big contract guy (when at his peak) so might push for a longer deal OR a shorter deal just to reestablish his value. Should be interesting negotiation.
Preller is a gambler so would not rule out a multi-year deal offer. Actually could get creative for keeping in the CBT for 2022 … league minimum for 2022 then options for future years. The CBT amount does not consider options … so only a minimum hit in 2022. Given recent deals … player options at a “good” price might appeal to Boras … Conforto gets two months to re-establish value and if he does not accept the option and go FA … if less than a stellar two months take the 2023 option for a full year to re-establish for FA after 2023.
LHH OF … what other teams are looking for LHH OF? TOR - NYY - BOST come to mind … all would be legit competition to the Padres for his services and TOR and NYY are good hitters’ environments.

The only thing that could give SD the leg up over those 3 teams, would be his vaccination status.

I'd much prefer one of those A.L. teams over the Cards,Phils or Giants.
Losing Soto to a Wild Card challenger would be worst case scenario.
Even over the Dodgers getting him.

A deal that would be interesting soon (like this weekend) would be with KC
Whit 2B/CF/OF/DH + Beni LF/DH + Barlow RP.... $15.7 total $$ (pro rated about $5.7 left for 2022)
Padres send Grishman + Myers $20mil (Prorated +$1 option = $8) + Knehr + Mears
Deal would give us roughly $3.5mil under lux tax... and Barlow has Closer experience and is super cheap for 23... Beni is a FA in 23 and Whit has team options so they could be rentals or brought back ... net effect on 40 3 in 3 out ...0...
We address BP now.. OF now .. and lengthen the lineup and bench now... while still being able to address Power/Slg bat plan 1 Soto. Plan B Contreras/Bell/Mancini/etc...
Melvin can figure out his lineup/s (CJ/Batten would probably go back to AAA for seasoning and depth.. ) Maybe even get familiar with CF a little more.. in case Ruiz struggles a bit or Whit can't handle it for more than a few starts here and there.. ultimately we may see Fernando in CF or RF based on how Mazara/Ruiz/Kim etc are handling CF/SS/RF... good versatile starters on the bench and the field.. can nurse nicks and bruises and keep everyone fresh and engaged..
For KC they gain 4 yrs control of Grishman, a huge power OF spec in Mears and a Pbin Knehr 6yrs controlled who has looked terrific in 8.1 IP for the Pads 0.00 in 2022.. and who could develop into a #4 type SP..or a BP swing man similar to Nick Mart and who is mlb ready now..

Few teams have a CJ Abrams (MLB ready top 6 type spec in all of baseball) to lead with.... .. Abrams is going to be a STAR unfortunately we are kind of in an all in period... Manny can opt out or opt in for the remainder of his deal after 2023 ..only 1 chance..stay for the rest or reneg/go after 2023 if Soto is here ..likely he stays .. if he is not and we aren't making big moves ie Bell/Contreras (maybe both) he may go...

Jays can match CJ with C Moreno BUT Nats luckily have K. RUIZ at Catcher so Moreno is sort of a luxury.. where as CJ becomes another positions young stud for the Nats..

I dont want anything to with Merrifield, he is 33 years old, and 40 points his career BA and OBP, both his calling cards, so probably on his decline. Dont see much of an improvement over Grisham at this time, especially if Grish can pull his head out.

Grishman 2nd half last yr .211/.296/.333 .630OPS
1st half this yr .191/.292/.330 .622 OPS
That's his last 160 Games played or a full season.. that is NO GOOD ..especially since his defense appears to have regressed even worse....

I am in the camp that Grisham has zero trade value … yeh, some team would take him given he is cheap and controlled for 3 years .. upside gamble but not actually value him much in a trade.
I will also add that Mears has zero trade value … he at this point is jut a throw-in. He has played so poorly in LE he got demoted to ACL and has remained a K machine when he plays. A very bad trajectory. Again, someone would take him … just not put much value on him in a deal.
Of the non-elite Padre prospects … best trade chips are probably Rosario and Knehr unless dip in to the ACL/DSL for the high ceiling types. Rosario and Knehr may be enough to make progress on a “rental” add since not likely other teams will be offering more.

I guess they have to gamble on Ruiz … or Tatis to CF for this season … consider Abrams to CF when Tatis returns … deal for Laureano. Given Grisham’s work … he is a bad gamble to rebound in the next two weeks.
Agree Merrifield appears to be past his use by date … again not a gamble to play CF now.
