I guess they have to gamble on Ruiz … or Tatis to CF for this season … consider Abrams to CF when Tatis returns … deal for Laureano. Given Grisham’s work … he is a bad gamble to rebound in the next two weeks.

Agree Merrifield appears to be past his use by date … again not a gamble to play CF now.

I would think that if you are looking for the best use of existing/returning players for both defense and offense. I would suggest,

Use Tatis at DH for most of the week, limiting the diving on the wrist. Keep Kim at SS 4-6 days a week. Platoon Abrams/Ruiz in CF. Keep Myers off the grass to protect the knee, and have split time at DH and 1B. Use Hosmer for his best match ups and sit him the rest of the time.

And then option Grisham to EP, and see if he can catch some love down in that hitters paradise.

Jettison Voit for a bag of balls and a case of sunflower seeds, and CBT space.

that works for me.

Sort of sifting through the MLBTradeRumors piece on he market for SP (rentals and those with 1+ years control). They were clear (but not specific) on there being quite a few teams seeking SP and went through the potential options … a couple of the more noted names nursing minor injury. So, some strength in dealing for Preller if he wants to clear some payroll space. MLBTR suggested Snell (of course) or Clevinger in play.

Since I like Clevinger even though he will be a FA … I would push to deal Snell’s $10MM AAV (opens up the doors for a Bell/Benintendi/Contreras type add) vs. the lower number for Clevinger. It also frees up cash (not AAV) in 2023 to resign Clevinger who I think would be very happy to return to SD along with Musgrove.

Don’t know Snell’s vaccination status (could be an issue) but if done … got to think TOR (has the money and need) would be the top option but BOST is desperate for SP and since already over the tax level and maybe +3.3MM will not be that much an issue yet not get them to the second tier.

More off days in the last two months to break up the SP … Musgrove - Darvish - Manaea - Clevinger as the core with Gore - Martinez - Morejon should be able to handle #5 and spot. Adding, the bat should be more valuable to winning than the “insurance” Snell might provide IF he turns it around.

Was thinking the same thing, moving Snell is a good move for SD.

Agreed, I think Clevinger wants to come back to SD, I would think he likes the vibe in SD, and we should have a winning team for the balance of a 3-5 year contract for him.

I think he is pitching Saturday in between Yu (Friday) and Musgrove (Sunday) as a showcase start... thats been Manea's spot all year...

Reading a Blue Jays focused site on their trade deadline thinking (writers view). Covers both the Soto issue and the other deadline targets.

Keeping in mind TOR has the money, has quality prospects, and has shown it wants to win this year the article was pretty balanced on pros and cons of moves.

On Soto … suggested the WASH demand would be 3-4 top prospects AND 1-2 MLB level players (they saw Bichette being a name in play). That is pretty steep. Did say somewhat less in prospects if they took on Corbin’s contract. Did not seem the writer was pushing TOR go for Soto.

On other TOR trade priorities (this may work with SD objectives) … the writer listed 12 targets in preference order (his order). 10 of the 12 were pitchers, a mix of SP/RP. Only non-pitchers were Bell 5th and Happ 10th.

So it seems from this writer should expect TOR to move strongly on pitching and they have the flexibility to add multiple pieces. Maybe Soto, Bell, or Happ are not prime targets.

If opening CBT space is a step toward the Padres adding offense … Snell to TOR fits both team’s objectives (return a non-roster prospect). Unfortunately, the returns of Pomeranz, Suarez, and Johnson seem to be lagging and maybe post-deadline making moving a ML RP like Garcia (or Suarez) is unlikely. Maybe they would take a flyer on Lamet for “insurance” into 2023 but probably not a target for them.

I had an AJP special.. dream... Mullens and Mancini were Padres and then I woke up..

Royals just released three guys.....making room for a Benintendi deal?

12 days left  .. lets pop the cork and let the champagne flow...

Was playing around with positions and how to keep Profar busy (ABs) if we get OF help. . And 1B is a position he has played quite a bit and his Defensive grades there are very good.. our best Defensive infield would be Profar 1B/Crone 2B/Kim SS/Manny 3B.  An OF of Tatis/Ruiz/Mazara works for me...Obviously SOTO pushes Mazara to DH .. adds like Mancini/Benintendi/Bell and/or Contreras makes the shuffling interesting...

Got to think

Myers $20/$9.... salary/prorated amt left + buyout

Voit $5.75 (+1 arb)

Snell $13/$5.5...(only $10 towards Lux + 1 yr control)

Lamet $4 45 (+1 arb)

I am not listing Hosmer cause too hard to move...

I think 2 or 3 of these guys will no longer be with the team come 8/3

OK, crazy and not saying any of this can/will happen, but some numbers to chew on. There are 68 games remaining for SD, and probably about the same for the rest of MLB, so here is the list of our fantasy trade talk players and what they are owed for 68 games±.

Snell - $4.2M, Voit - $2.29M, Lamet - $2.0M, and Hosmer - $7.56M. A total of $16.05M that could move off the CBT books for SD this season.

Bell - $4.2M, Contreras - $4.04M, Benintendi - $3.57M, and Soto (the dream)-$7.18M. A total of $18.98M added to the CBT books for 2022.

Thats a difference of almost $3M, and according to Spotrac.com, SD is already $4.5± over for the season, so that would be a penalty amount between $7.5-8M for 2022. Now IF you could get Soto, no need for Benintendi at that time.

So just money wise, SD could look at getting Bell, Contreras, and Soto for $15.42M in CBT for 2022, and if they ship out all 4 of Snell, Voit, Hosmer, and Lamet they would save $.63M in CBT dollars.

So the dream would be, Lamet to CHC, Snell and Hosmer to BOS, and Voit to TB. Not sure what SD would have to add to get Contreras from CHC. BOS could handle SD garbage salary dump. And Voit is a fairly cheap DH/1B option for TB.

Obviously there will have to be some MiLs exchanged to make these work,
