Trades June/July/Deadline

Not that I think we have any chance of trading for Soto.....but,the Dodgers and Giants could.

This is not a good omen.

Especially the Giants as they will have plenty of money to lock this kid up and we would not only not have him in Brown but also have to face him 19 times a season.

Well, certainly the LAD ... but doubt SF has the prospects to get it done. Money yes when he is a FA.

Just hard to size a deal not knowing if you can actually sign Soto long term. Apparently he was a long term deal that has the highest guaranteed money of all time plus an AAV that is near the top. So MLB suggest that is 12-13 years at $440MM but NOT backloaded and NOT with deferred money. Not may can play in that league.

If you know you will not sign him ... how far would a team go giving multiple prospects for 2.3 years? Would have to be a well healed contender.

I would offer a huge package to LAA for Othani at the same time I offer for Soto.. Othani is 2 players in one..a Bat and a SP so 10/500 is like = to Myers + Hosmer.. which we can carry fine... 10/400.. 12/500 for Soto.. is not as easy to carry cause that only covers 1 spot.. if that makes any sense.. assuming AJP knows he can extend Othani or (Soto) for that money (or in that neighborhood) soon (offseason)

Because 1 1/2 yrs of Othani is like 3 yrs of control (you are getting 1.5 SPnand 1.5 DH) I would offer the exact prospect deal for both

LAA get Voit (to match Othani $$) + CJ Abrams + Hassell III + Gore + Campusano + Victor Acosta.. Padres get Othani

Wash gets Myers (to match $$) $5 mil in $$ + CJ Abrams + Hassell III + Gore + Campusano + Victor Acosta.. Padres get SOTO

Call me crazy but if we can extend both (Othani 10/500..or (Soto 12/500)... I think Othani fits in better$$ wise and 2 position wise in SDP than Soto who only impacts 1 side of the ball..

So according to Spotrac.com they have SD already $4.7M over the CBT for this season. So really, Siedler just needs to be ready to stroke a check and let Preller get some needed help, and then worry about next season.

According to my rough math, SD will have the following CBT space up through 2026.

2023 - $59M±

2024 - $103M±

2025 - $92M±

2026 - $120M±

Now we need to see what Musgrove gets here soon, and then we would know what type of room we would have for Soto.

Just so that we are clear ... 2026 (I believe) only includes the AAV for Machado and Tatis. Need to fund the 24 remaining players on the 26 man roster. Put us back to needing a quality group of league minimum types to fund any additional high price tickets ... one already likely to be Musgrove.

For 2026, I had estimated arb raises for players under control, such as Crone, Crismat, Grish, Ruiz, etc.

So if we were able to have the prospects to get Soto, and say that he signs an extension, for $450 over 12 years, that would be a $37.5M CBT hit. This would also include $22.5M for Musgrove (guess).

Leaving about $1M available  in 2023. $43M in 2024, $32M in 2025, and $60M in 2026.

Cronenworth and Grisham are FA after 2025 .. I think.

Correct, thanks.

Soto is intriguing.....but at what cost?

Teaming him with Tatis and Machado would be incredible but, after AJ dumping so many prospects( read: low cost) do we have enough everyday players to compete?

A package with Grisham and Cronenworth ( a Gold Glover and All Star, both under control for what 3 years beyond 2022?)  Abrams ( our top prospect), Hassell( second best prospect) puts a huge dent in roster.

I'm thinking either Abrams or Hassell( dare I say both? Not to mention Woods if he's included)) have strong futures here....I'm not sure Soto's bat replaces so many other holes???? See Mike Trout in Orange County.....you need A LOT of good players, not just a few.
